Have no need for such a device but I generally watch everything you post, in part because even though I am not the target audience for this device I always manage to learn something about the dark art of sound! Two personal fun notes, 1) I've lived in the south for decades and every time I see vistas of the mountains of Summit county my heart leaps! and 2) I loved your little undisclosed homage to Mr. Caleb Pike. I've followed the two of you for years and owe you both a debt of gratitude.

Excellent job on this review from beginning to end in all aspects, from the inclusion of the initial text summary and complete detailed description of all functions, to the studio and location production values (nice studio lighting w/black background) as well as them being great live examples and samples of the H1n's abilities and output. I just scrolled through the comments and it looks like I'm not alone in my opinion, but this was the first review of yours that I've seen, so even though you don't need any more compliments I've already finished. Thanks for the info.

Hi, for about the same price, I'd go for the Zoom F4 and RODE NTG2. The F4 is a far superior recorder to the H6 and I personally prefer the sound of the NTG2 over the NTG4+: Zoom F4: bhpho.to/2Aplb5d RODE NTG2: bhpho.to/2yLen0I

This is much easier than the gear we used to record sounds effects with back in the 1980s. Folley work taught me a lot about how important realistic sound effects lift a scene in production.

Great review. I picked up the H1n to do ASMR and outdoor ambient sound videos (tight budget). I'm very happy with the audio quality for the price. However, it does pick up a lot of noise. Also, it doesn't quite have the deep binaural sound that I'm looking for, so I'm hoping an external mic will help fill in the gaps. Some triggers sound great with just the H1n, though.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing. Agreed - you will not get a "deep binaural" sound from microphones in an X/Y pattern like this.

Excellent video. The "digital attenuator below 3.5" was a great detail, as I tried using the h1n to record from a line out connection (quite loud compared to a mic input). Even when the levels showed that the peaks were at -12dB, there was noticeable distortion. Increasing the zoom gain to 5 and reducing the volume of the source fixed it! Not sure why the manual says "line input" when it cant work fine with such higher levels.

Line level is about 1,000 times stronger than mic level. You should use an inline attenuator to take Line level audio down to Mic level. Somewhere between -25db and -40db will do the trick.

I have a question , since there's two x-y capsules in this mic , if I point one capsule towards my mouth then the levels are different in x and y , then i can convert it to stereo in post , so do this work as a cheap version of safety track feature ? because i can use another capsule's sound incase it clips , what do you say? 😃😂😃
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Maven Sony, you could sort of. You cannot control the input level for the microphones separately, but if you point one of them at you and the other away from you, the mic pointing away from you will record at a lower level. The only problem is that the sound from that mic pointing away will not pick up all of the frequencies so it'll sound a little colored. Hope that makes sense.

I need something for Shortfilm purposes, so ideally it should be able to record the voice of one person or more people at the same time plus sound effects. Would it be suitable for this purpose? Naturally I'm gonna need to move much while filming. I don't really wanna spend more than that since I'm only doing it for a hobby. Oh and what's the maximum distance for good recording? Thanks for the video.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes, this can do the job. Like any other microphone, you need to get the microphones close to the sound source. For example for dialogue recording, I boomed the H1n just in front and above me, just barely out of the frame. When you try to record dialogue from, say, 6 feet away, it'll pick up a bunch of ambient noise. So just get creative and get that microphone/recorder close. It'll get the job done nicely.

Great videos Curtis, thanks for doing these reviews on audio recorders. I have taken interest into recording live rock concerts and have been looking into stereo recorders between the $100-200 range. In this video you mention this recorder's input levels may not be able to be turned down enough for loud recordings due to the pre-amps, I was wondering if you have a list of audio recorders you would recommend for rock concerts (even beyond the price range mentioned above). Recently the Olympus LS-P4 has arrived on the market (to replace the LS-100 model) advertising as great "better than CD quality" recorder, this claim is backed by the device having 3 microphones equipped to capture 20Hz-20kHz audio files which are stored as FLAC. Could you perhaps review this audio recorder? thanks

Yep. Have a Tascam DR-22WL which has been fine for me, and Wi-Fi extra has been really useful. Has to be said Tascam have been really good with adding new firmware features to this and related devices. Always inspires confidence, when a company keeps adding features like this, to what is essentially an inexpensive device, without just bringing out new models which "replace" the old one in short time. That we can get this sort of quality, and feature sets in such reasonably priced gear these days, is amazing! PS. And thanks once again, for your excellent reviews and guides.

Amazon or Zoom wasn't clear as to what type of Lighting cord to purchase for file transferring to my iMac (which they should have left alone. Wow! Great video. Really this is the best one of all the H1 videos. KZbin should be placing this first... I had to watch like 5 or 6 before seeing this. I'm 100% buying because of this because of you. Thoughts on this... (I'm asking advice): Use the Roge wireless Go mic > to Zoom H1n > to iPhone. Think that would work? Basically using it as a preamp and feeding the audio direct into the footage (captured on iPhone).
@curtisjudd

Thanks Dan. With the Wireless GO, it’s probably be easier to feed it directly to your phone. The H1n probably would not add much in that configuration. Best wishes!

I recently used this with a R0DE Wireless GO. I have found that if the Wireless GO's receiver is in close proximity to the XY stereo microphones, there will be high-pitch whining will be picked up by the receiver. I found that it is important to keep the receiver at least 6 inches to a foot away from the XY stereo microphones; this may not be as easy with the R0DE's included red coiled cable.

hi, you are a man who helps and has answer to every problem (as you have made lots of useful videos ) i wanna say thank you for your efforts. i have one doubt, you suggested me takstar if budget is the issue so for beginner what's your take to buy takstar decent budget friendly mic or instead buy zoom h1 slightly high budget but not at all...compared to rodes.? actually in my case i have omnidirectional audio technica lav. mic which is connect to canon dslr the sound is fine but hisss noise is so overcoming, so i asked you about shotgun mic. takstar which i can buy from my savings ! but on watching this video i am thinking whether i should buy zoom h1n and then i will have two options - 1. directly record 2. connect my lav. mic in recorder to avoid much noise ?? can you please guide me wuth your reply it matters a lot to me thank you

Hi again, If you're getting a lot of hiss from your camera, a Zoom H1n *might* help reduce that. It depends on the microphone you use with it. The Takstar does quite well with the H1n.

@@curtisjudd thanks again for your quick response, i need to record speech just like you, while sitting infront of the camera ! for YT videos.. if i am going with takstar i need extension cable refering to your suggestion which will add to the budget i already have lav. omni directional mic the sound quality is hearable and good , except the background noise ( so in your reply it depends on the microphone so it is hit and trial ) but even if i can't get good sound with zoon h1n and lav mic combo.. i will still have zoom h1n as an recording option ..as i need good voice for my audience to hear me clearly in mY videos..i am not pro like you..i need a decent sound output that's it for new channel as you said SOUND MATTERS like what basic filmaker channel says

Very good rereview and a nice product. I own two of the Zoom H1. For me the safety track is the best feature a recorder can have. As a one man show, I can take care of more pressing things like focus, exposure, white ballance, if the recorders do their job without my assistance.

@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 жыл бұрын
Hi DBoom70, thanks for the input. The tone is used to sync when you have the output on the H1n running to your camera's mic input. After you have started recording on the camera and H1n, you press the tone button and that creates a sync point which you can use in post to line up the audio and video. Most video editing apps automate this for you. Which app do you use to edit?

Should be able to, yes. It depends. The biggest thing you can do to improve the sound of a mini shotgun mic like the Boya is to get it off the camera and closer to the person speaking. If this allows you to do that, then it will improve the sound quality.

Hey @Curtis Judd, I realize this is an old video, but is there are preferred gain setting on the Zoom H1n to minimize internal noise from the preamps? If I recall, you did a very detailed test on the H1 where you detected a noise bump at a certain gain setting.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 4 жыл бұрын
I've heard, though haven't tested, that the lowest settings on the H1n also do digital attenuation like the original H1 so best to stay above 4 or 5 if you can.

I'm using Rode VideoMic pro with my GoPro 6 but it is prone to interference when the GoPro wireless connections are turned on (wifi/Bluetooth). Do you think the HN1 is likely to be an improvement? Did you try using it as a camera microphone only and not a recorder? Nearly a year since you did this video, has the tripod screw hole broken or has it held up over this time?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Geoff, I don’t believe I’ve ever had any RF interference issues with the H1 or the H1n Pro when I borrowed it for this video. But I never used it with a GoPro with all its radios on. I have used the original H1 as the mic for a camera with fine results. I had to return the H1n to its owner so I haven’t used it since then.
