Over the past six years we’ve learned four different ways to stain multiple touching shades of stain. We hope this video will do they same for you, but in six minutes. These simple tricks have significantly removed the barriers of tackling intricate stained designs
The featured set in the thumbnail and the first paused set (Coachella and stagecoach) would have seemed impossible only a few weeks prior to its conception, as I had only just been exposed to the idea for “method #2” (poly over). I was a nervous wreck feeling overwhelmed and confident I would surely have a wasted set on my hands, but this new counterintuitive method worked its miracle, and has co to used doing so in the few months since. This set helped unlock possibilities for future sets and was the catalyst for the production of this stain method series.
I am confident these 4 methods will be able to do the same for you, and make staining the easy part, leaving the vinyl as the most challenging aspect of intricate stain work. Since vinyl was previously a breakthrough for me only a couple years ago, turning my newest weapon into my biggest challenge (without it actually getting any more challenging) is a transition in stain development I’d wish on everyone! I hope you enjoy my attempt to trunkade my 6 year journey through the world of intricate stain work into 7 minutes.

I’ve also seen a free hand method of “painting” an image with dark gel stain onto light wood, waiting for it to dry and then staining over the whole piece with ether a lighter stain or dark stain over everything to give it uniformity

Yes! If you have the time, this is the same as the poly-over method but without the poly. Some gel stains and environments have unpredictable cure times and the last thing you want is to smear the dark when you apply the medium or dark shade. It definitely works though when you have all those factors under control.

I am definitely going to try these suggestions. Funny that I just messaged you on Instagram yesterday about this. Using the poly as a block could definitely help me. Thank you.

So glad the timing worked out! I was so excited to share that method, as it made me think back to sooooooooooo many times that I remasked unnecessarily, and all the time I could have saved. Had to share 👍

Can I order/buy vinyl designs or should I just buy a printer?

Love the video, but you used the same board (the "remask" board) for the "final" shot of each method. Would have been better to see each final image for comparison. Or even all 4 side by side.

Totally agree... it ended up being an issue where I didn’t get it during filming (I just got it on the first, stain over method) and the product was picked up before I could get more shots... I did actually take a side by side comparison shot for my Instagram teaser post ( instagram.com/p/CB1jXUgjHcm/?igshid=ufuo4h5uk9oj ) that I think you’ll see is nearly indescribable between the methods which ultimately gave me the confidence to just reuse. Glad you enjoyed the video!

Do you ever use a lighter penetrating stain on the second step in the 'stain over' method? Reason I ask is there seems to be many more color options in penetrating stain than gel stain. What about a layer of pre stain conditioner between 1st coat of gel stain and second coat of penetrating stain? Thanks for the videos, all super helpful.

It may be wiser to reverse the order of the penetrating and gel stain in my question above... Start with lighter penetrating stain over the entire board then add tape/stencil and stain over with the gel stain. Thoughts?

Great ideas Nate! Staining darker gel stains over lighter shades definitely works. For small areas, you're right, it's easier. For larger dark areas, it can get a bit streaky because the dark stain doesn't have any natural wood to soak in to and grab hold. In this video for example, the N,E,S,W was first a medium shade, then made darker with a java over the top of it. Worked great because it's a small area. kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIfHamyihsdnqZI

I love you video differently the most I depth on how to stain and make cornhole boards. Just wondering what grit do you sand to before staining?
@cornholecollective7116

Glad you enjoyed it Anthony!!! Personally I’m using 400 grit before stain. I have another video on here “6 easy steps to prevent stain bleed” that outlines it a bit too.

What option do you choose when doing multiple colors and is it different with paint.. especially for the style that you put poly over
@cornholecollective7116
@cornholecollective7116 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks joe. So the poly over method is identical to the stain over method (method 1), but is just faster due to the introduction of poly. The colors need to have similar bases. In the video I chose java and prairie wheat, two shades of brown. Technically the Prairie wheat is tinting the java, but it’s not noticeable since it’s a similar base shade (brown). With colored stain you’d be tinting the first color far more noticeably so you’d want to use the remask method. Paint would simply hide your first color, so this method would not help with paint. I hope that helps

Not sure how I landed on this but OMG, great vid editing and production! How many cutting boards did you cut to start off with? Should be a contest...Hope all is well in these crazy times.

Haha thank you so much Bob! Fortunately I edit my photos on my computer and text to my phone to add to IG, so I was able to gather up a bunch of my photos from the past couple years. I used every photo I could find, otherwise I would have let that intro go on for as long as I could 😂... but seriously, I’m glad you found it and enjoyed it

When it comes to vinyls do you print your own? How much is a setup like that?
@cornholecollective7116
@cornholecollective7116 4 жыл бұрын
We cut our own. I remember it being one of our first big purchases, and we were both nervous. But after cutting our first designs, neither of us were looking back! In the description we have links to the setup we recommend. It’s about $550-$600 and you’ll have enough to make about 20 sets of full length stencils. which is quite a bit less than you could expect to pay someone else to cut those same sets for you. It’s an absolute game changer and we strongly recommend it 👍. We have a setup for a PC user in the description and is your purchase through those links it will cost you the same, but supports our channel. Good luck with the decision

Hey please help the pro ployuthain you use for your boards. Is that product good for it being outdoors as well?
@cornholecollective7116
@cornholecollective7116 4 жыл бұрын
Pro finisher is an indoor poly. Indoor water based poly is a popular choice. At first I had issues accepting this, but when i learned that none of the materials I’m using are pressure treated (for staying in the elements) it made much more sense. So no part of your boards are designed to be left outside. They should be treated like your coffee table. It can be taken outside, you can get it wet if you clean it up right after with no adverse effect, and it should be stored inside. Hope that helps
