What about the beginning of Elf, starring Will Ferrell? Little baby Buddy is the ONLY baby in the orphanage run by really caring nuns. They're definitely going to notice that he's missing the next day! There must have been a panic attack, police searches, general chaos after he disappeared; they definitely thought that this innocent little baby was kidnapped and freaked out, and he was never found. Would the nun who puts him to bed get blamed for his disappearance?

In Mrs. Doubtfire I felt bad for the mom's boyfriend. He didn't cause their divorce. He was interested in Miranda and made an effort to get to know her kids and treated them with kindness and respect. He took them all on a fancy vacation, granted he had the money, but he wasn't some horrible character who was trying to get rid if the kids so he could bone the mom. He was a successful handsome man that Miranda could have possibly grown to care about and he accepted that she had 3 children with an irresponsible guy and he was still willing to take on that baggage and be a good male role model for them. And he almost went into anaphylactic shock due to the pepper allergy and Mrs. Doubtfire sneaking into the kitchen to ruin his meal by trying to poison him. Also I feel sorry for the restaurant employees who got in trouble for that. I never liked the bus driver. He was creepy in a doesn't stop when his advances are not encouraged kind of way.

if Pierce Brosnan looked anything like Robin Williams no one would be championing for him. smh who are these women who want their children to have no father and go on fancy vacations? surely they could go on as many fancy vacations as they wanted with her high power career... oh wait. She was a workaholic who unilaterally decided everything, including not going on fancy vacations her pride swelled at seeing her little angels frogmarched up to do their homework and brush their teeth, (obedience is the key) she never even talks to them. we should feel bad for the dad; the movie is a genderbent indictment of inequal treatment born in homemaker vs. breadwinner co-parenting conflicts he's basically the first wife from a bygone era of family justice casually(no fault)replaced with no supports or considerations. if the movie was recast with a guy divorcing his wife because she couldn't keep a 'good' job and then he hooked up with some heiress the streets would run slick with the blood of men

Stuart Little was written by E.B. White in the 1930s and 40s (published 1945), so setting the film in the 90s was a huge mistake. It also changes significantly from the source material by Stuart bring adopted -- in the book, he was born to the family (planning it even more deeply in the realm of fantasy). He was also a mouse as a metaphor for children with disabilities, in the book, though for race in the film. The film is about transracial adoption, which I thought was pretty transparent. Heck, when I was six and reading the book in the Eighties, I thought the metaphor for children with disabilities was pretty transparent.

Hi Daniel, I found your take on the bus driver very interesting! From the very first time I watched the film as a young girl I always thought 'Mrs doubtfire is tired and just wants to go home yet this persistent man won't stop talking to her' and as I got older 'persistent' was replaced by 'creepy' as I thought it was pretty obvious Mrs D wasn't interested and wanted to be left alone. Not that I think your take on it is wrong... I just find it really interesting that we saw the exact same interaction two VERY different ways. When I saw Mrs D on the thumbnail I assumed the character you would talk about was the boyfriend... from my recollection he never did anything wrong but he was a threat to Robin Williams in terms of a more successful and good looking option for his (ex) wife. I'd have to rewatch it again to see if he was actually a nasty/rude/bad character (good excuse to rewatch a classic! Yay!)
@artistryiscomingback6 жыл бұрын
For sure, I thought the same thing!! And you said it so well 😄
@therealCrazyJake6 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't call it creepy, but definitely uncomfortable. The discomfort of the situation is something that is clearer to the audience, because we know what's going on, but the bus driver is clueless, so it's less clear that the person he's flirting with isn't comfortable. From the bus driver's perspective, he's speaking with someone who's polite and believes her to not be bothered by engaging in small talk. It's sincere enough to where you know he isn't trying to be a creep about it, but just creepy enough for the audience to sympathize with Daniel Hillard/Mrs. Doubtfire's situation. He's just an old man looking for love in all the wrong places. Also, I feel as though, Robin Williams could have just broke character and said "come on, man, I've had a long day, just drive, please."
@Jaytheradical6 жыл бұрын
I'm sorry, did you just refer to the main character of Mrs. Doubtfire as neither "Robin Williams" nor "Mrs. Doubtfire", each of them perfectly acceptable in any company, but by the character's actual name? That's absurd.
@jenna90026 жыл бұрын
I always thought it was a sly comment on how women are treated in public even though they are obviously uncomfortable/ not interested and how there is a power balance shift with him being the bus driver and it being only the two of them on the bus. You can tell he means well but it isn't done at an appropriate time causing the audience to feel a bit skeeved out
@a243966 жыл бұрын
The only thing keeping me from agreeing with you is that the bus driver didn't get rebuffed... Mrs. Doubtfire could have chosen a seat further from the front, or told him "she" wasn't interested - in a relationship - just about anything... Instead, "she" said nothing. In fact, the easiest thing for a disinterested Mrs. Doubtfire to do would have been to use "her" normal man voice and tell the guy it's a costume for a performance... Had Mrs. Doubtfire said or done anything to dissuade the bus driver then I'd be in total agreement with you... Otherwise, O'Brien's analysis rings true... And makes me more than a little sad... (also, we live in a world where the guy is expected to pursue the girl - but the girl get's to set all the conditions: leave her alone unless she's interested, pay for everything if she is interested - or hasn't decided yet, don't make any moves but definitely be confident, just be yourself and friendly, but don't be too pushy... It seems like it's always a lose/lose situation. That's not to suggest that "no" isn't a perfectly good answer and should end the conversation - but it's really hard to know sometimes what the rules are)

I am troubled by the implication that the bus driver was owed Mrs. Doubtfire's participation in unsolicited flirting. Especially since she was repeatedly trapped in an enclosed space with him.
@therealCrazyJake6 жыл бұрын
Synde Ton he never implied that Mrs. Doubtfire owed the bus driver anything, he just said that it's probably depressing for him that not only was his flirting unwanted, but that the only person we see him show interest in wasn't even real in the first place. The only implication was that if it was just the two of them on the bus, why would Robin Williams have to keep up the charade instead of breaking character to stop the flirting. After all, we see him break character when he's getting his purse stolen. The flirting coming from the old man comes off as uncomfortable enough to sympathize with Robin Williams' character, but without getting creepy enough for us not to sympathize with the bus driver. We can see that he's trying to be sweet with his flirting, but we understand that it's an uncomfortable situation for Williams.

therealCrazyJake As a woman, I have been in situations where I know I am going to have to see the same person every time I use a particular service and that person won't pick up on my uncomfortable body language or the fact that I try to avoid more than one word answers. The reality is that the options are being blunt and risking them getting angry and considering you that rude bitch and treating you poorly from then on or staying stoic and hoping that they eventually leave you alone. I have tried both with varying results. To me, by framing the bus driver as the victim in this situation, is no different than supporting a cat-caller's right to impose themselves into the lives of passersby, only it's worse cause he the drive gets to hold her hostage each night. No matter how polite the bus driver is with his unwanted sexual overtures, they are unwanted and he is being unprofessional - he is not the victim just because he was hitting on a cross dresser. Also, cross dress are people and do exist. She wasn't a freakin hologram.
@therealCrazyJake6 жыл бұрын
Synde Ton nobody said the bus driver was the victim!! Here's a thought, try putting yourself in someone else's shoes and consider how they might perceive something differently. The old man may not have picked up on his body language, and for obvious reasons: it's not as obvious as YOU think it is. This old man is just someone who didn't mean any harm by his words, but wasn't being appropriate given the situation. Considering that Robin Williams was wearing a body suit and a latex mask, he probably couldn't have picked up on certain nonverbal reactions. Remember that we only see the scene from Daniel Hillard's perspective, so we have no idea what it's like for the old man. The way I see it, he was being sincere with his words, but we as the audience are more aware of the uncomfortable circumstances.
@LO-yz1kt6 жыл бұрын
therealCrazyJake the name of the video disagrees with you on the victim thing. And My entire point was that men should try to see it from the lady's point of view, so stop getting so up in arms please. Not meaning any harm is not the same as not doing anything wrong. It is no different from being stopped by those guys who think it's okay to tell women, "You should smile more. You'd be prettier if you smiled." Like the woman has an obligation to be pretty for him.
@therealCrazyJake6 жыл бұрын
Synde Ton you're missing the point of Daniel's take on the scene. You can either look at the interaction with only the perspective given by the movie or you can look at it from both ends with a fuller understanding towards both parties, and simply chalk it up as a misunderstanding. Yes, the scene is intended to look from "a lady's perspective" as you say. Good job, you understand symbolism. But the scene is also supposed to act as a situational irony, because we know what's going on better than the side character in question. He could be a serial killer for all we know; he could be a sociopath with a long history of violence and sexism; he could be a real sleaze bag; however, for all we know, he could also be a quiet guy who just doesn't interact much outside of the occasional lone passenger (which, by the way, is common for any chauffeur or bus driver to do from time to time). When talking about any character on this list, all you can do is speculate what it's like on their end, because that's not what the movie is focused on. At the end of the day, we're both just talking about a side character that we can literally interpret however we want outside of the scene. Since he's not the main focus of the movie, we don't know his story, and we probably never will.

I love DOB, but man it's super depressing to think that he can watch those bus driver scenes from Doubtfire and place himself so fully on the bus driver's side. Like, would you really not be uncomfortable if a stranger commented on your body hair? And openly stared at you instead of doing his job? It's true that Robin Williams' character didn't explicitly rebuff the driver's advances but Williams' character is clearly uncomfortable and not encouraging the flirting. When you're on a bus you are at the mercy of the driver so the driver has the power in this situation and he's making someone visibly uncomfortable by objectifying them. No, it's not sweet. No, it doesn't become cute just because he might be lonely.

The real victim of mrs doubtfire was a character portrayed by Pierce Brosnan. He was just some guy trying to Kindle a romance with this newly divorced single mother of three and he seemed to be a genuinely good guy who got along with all the family and had a really good job and meanwhile Robin Williams, the father, tries to breaks them up simply because. As much as I love Robin Williams his character was not so great. He seems to show a not great work ethic constantly getting fired from jobs, dragging your kids outta school and putting yourself in debt so they can throw wild parties for his children. Yes he may have loved his kids, but this does not excuse his several horrible choices or actions made throughout this movie.

artistryiscomingback Yes, I totally agree! Plus, all the “positive” parts of the bus driver character aren’t positives, they’re just basic human decency. Should we really applaud a man for not grimacing at a woman for having hair? That should be like, minimum expectations. Plus he’s approaching Mrs. Doubtfire at night when they’re alone and he has the power, driving the bus. He seemed like a nice guy! He just wasn’t screwed nearly as much as Pierce Brosman’s character in the film.

I felt the exact opposite about that bus guy. @@ChineduOpara I could tell it was getting bad right around the time Cracked fired DOB, Swaim, Bowie, etc. and the comment sections just devolved into a morass of excitable false alarms for racism and sexism. What were the users’ responses? “I started to bring my daughter to karate classes so she can defend herself when this sexual harassment happens. It’s not okay! It’s not cute! I will not have my daughter be forced upon!” (I’m paraphrasing but I swear that’s as true as I can remember it.) These are the same people who rebuke comedians for “statements” (not jokes, mind you).
