You don’t need to worry about too much Selenium in Brazil nuts .. it’s bond with phytates so your body can’t absorb most of it , so actually Brazil nuts are not a great source for getting your selenium, you need to eat at least 10 nuts and barely get your daily needs ..

Phytic acid inhibits selenium a little but mainly it would inhibit iron.Besides soaking nuts overnight might reduce the quantity of phytic acid.

Hm, yeah...that was my motto for 40 years. My weight was decent, BP average-low, overall health seemed good...until I developed a severe asthmatic response to histamine that caused me to have an asthma attack when I swallowed any food because of the histamine produced to make stomach acid. You got it, suddenly I had to *_choose_* between *eating and breathing.* So I learned how to fast and started eating super clean, no more "everything in moderation" for me for the last 2 years, and now my leaky gut (which led to the histamine intolerance) is healed to the point where I don't have asthma anymore. No more wheat, no more processed food, no more sugar, not even in "moderation" for me, but one has to have a real problem to get to this mindset.

Being from the South I've been eating boiled peanuts since I could gum them. We buy a pound of raw, unprocessed nuts still in the shell and boil them in a large pot of fresh water that's lightly salted so that a little salinity penetrates through the nut shells (< 1/3 cup per gallon of water, otherwise they are too salty to eat). Cook from 3-5 hours (depending on the amount), occasionally sampling until they're soft (not mushy) and can be popped right out of the shell when pinched along the shell's natural seam. It takes awhile to eat boiled p-nuts one at a time so it's hard to overindulge in one sitting, but leftovers can be refrigerated in a sealed container for 4-5 days and they are as good cold as they are warm!

What matters in fatty nuts, we're told, is whether the trigylcerides are Omega 3 or Omega 6. That is the most useful information. Of course any nuts processed with oils, you can bet it's gonna be cheap omega 6 seed oils, so they're best avoided. Mixed nuts in bulk usually don't include that. I also avoid Brazil nuts, but mainly because they're so often "turned" and have an awful taste. I avoid pine nuts because in my experience they are more often than not rancid. No mention of pecans, which are very common in the US anyway. Since they're closely related to walnuts, I assume they're in the "good" category. Another nut that's very common (most of them are grown in my home state of Oregon) is the filbert, or hazelnut (there's some debate as to whether there's a difference). Personally, I don't like em that much but I think they're considered a healthy nut. A good substitute for macadamias (which are also very expensive) are marcona almonds, which have a similar shape and are (apparently) somewhat higher in fat than regular almonds.

@Swearengen1980 Ай бұрын
That's the rub that not everyone understands. Fat content can be good or bad depending on your diet. A healthy fat for a person who eats a lot of carbs is still not a great combination. Your body has to be adjusted to burning fat as a fuel source. I did a loose Carnivore for a while (ate nuts, cheese, and such) and once adjusted, I felt good. But that was boring and monotonous and I'm just as healthy eating a carbs, high protein and less fat. I still eat nuts, but much less. One just has to be consistent, know what combination works, and what works for them individually.

@Swearengen1980
@Swearengen1980 Ай бұрын
That's half ass explained and not correct in the way you worded it. Even carnivore people gain weight if their macros aren't right and eat too much fat. Healthy fat is good, but your total fat still matters, especially if you aren't very low carb. Calories in still matter. Also, types of carbs are relevant, no matter what those keto/carnivore grifters tell you. I'm in good shape at 44 and eat a lot of beans, potatoes, etc. It's the processed crap that kills you. Keto/carnivore loves to make carbs the devil and point to the long term human diet, but always conveniently forget that people have still been living to old age the last 10,000 years on a high carb diet. A lot of asians eat rice 3 meals a day and are far healthier. It's only modern history with chemicals, processed crap, etc. that carbs have led to issues.

Macademia nuts contain a significant amount of the relatively rare palmitoleic acid and there is only one other commercially available plant source and it is more expensive and much less palatable than macademia nuts and is Sea Buckthorn berry juice. Good luck sourcing that in edible condition. Macadamia nuts are a rich source of palmitoleic acid, a monounsaturated omega-7 fatty acid: Amount Macadamia kernels contain 12-30% palmitoleic acid. Health benefits Palmitoleic acid may help with: Cardiovascular health by reducing LDL cholesterol and fibrinogen, and increasing HDL cholesterol Inflammation by reducing inflammation Diabetes by decreasing the risk of diabetes

A “metallic taste” usually feels sharp or tangy, almost like biting into a coin or a spoon. It’s common to describe it as a faint taste of iron or copper.

Brazil/Amazonian nuts (2 names, depends in which country you buy them) are often cultivated in a radioactive environment - lots of radon gaz of radium, so it's another reason to not over eat them.

I disagree with this post, my go to nuts are Walnuts & macadamia nuts for their high omega 3 oils, every other day i add them to kefir yoghurt with chia, hemp & flax seeds which are also high in omega 3 oils. I stay away from almonds & cashews because they are high in omega 6 and are high in oxolates.

@ There is a lot of variation in people so portion size should not be the same for everyone. What you consider a small portion may not be what I consider a small portion. IME, in moderation is something that cannot be defined and thus is not helpful. Also, some food items can be harmful to some even in very small amounts, so again, moderation is problematic. Just one Brazil nut contains 96 micrograms of selenium, almost twice your daily requirement. Doctors advise eating no more than five Brazil nuts a day to avoid potential health risks like selenium toxicity. This condition is linked to breathing problems, heart issues, and kidney failure.
