Lol I went to parsons year 2017 as fashion major. I dropped out of parsons after freshman year because I already knew the roi was gonna be dog shit. People do take student loans for granted and I literally went back home with nothing but depression. I started working at a manufacturing plant in la and got to learn management and actual sewing skills for free while being paid. That got me through the door in terms of my next job, where I am currently a creative director. Whats funny is that, im going back to parsons but changing my major to design and technology so I can break into the tech industry pathway as a coder. I dont plan to graduate, I plan to make relationships that will get me through the door. Sometimes it is knowing who you know, and not what you know as well. Hard to admit, but its how the world works.

Yes,I understand that ..but this really provided a reality check..so now I can evaluate my passion to it and explore more of the process to test whether my affinity to it is strong enough..and not choose it just because I 'might ' like it..

@@peeppeeppoopoo6533 aaaww i don’t want to discourage you!! It’s obviously a great institution. I think you just need to enter with a real fire in your belly for the industry lol it’s intense so the only way to succeed is to live, breath and sleep fashion...I quickly realised that wasn’t me 🤦♀️

Would love to hear your story! Was it for similar reasons???
@Linda-dc7rl4 жыл бұрын
@@sharonyeunkim hey Sharon , thank you for this amazing vid! It was so comforting on the day I withdrew. 💕In my case I was about to do an MA, (years before I had studied a BA in fashion so I really should have known better ), quite annoyed at myself that I was about to make the same mistake twice 🤦♀️ ...It just felt like I would be doing an exhausting amount of work for very little to no gain...Iv done several internships in the past that have amounted to nothing and as you mentioned the average salary is extremely low for a fashion graduate with majority moving into different fields. I honestly wish I had listened to my parents at 18 when they told me to be practical with a degree choice, but I was so caught up on “living my dreams” lol. But that dream can quickly become a nightmare when your friends are progressing in different industries and you are almost 30 (in my case) without any stability. At this point stability is my main priority within a career path! If I had to do life over I would not have studied fashion for my BA

@@Linda-dc7rl thank you for your insight. Going thru an early life crisis. I was studying design and dropped out due to mental health issues. Recently I’ve been pandering going back or not... so thanks for your perspective cause I definitely rather have stability first so I can have a playground to explore this passion. What would you get your bacholers in if you could go back?

Same switching from fashion to UX here. The only thing I concern is that UX is having a higher and higher supply toward the job market too. What do you think about that?
@MillyLuo-qc6ef Жыл бұрын
Couple of years ago, fashion industry was already considered a dead industry in future. 15 years ago, I already saw many employees in this field were low pay. I asked the young girls how do you guy pay for the high student loan from fashion school ? They had no idea.
@sharonyeunkim Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it’s a lot of student debt. Not worth it to me for the projected salary outcomes post grad.

I work in the industry. 1. For design - if you’ve been sewing since five , go for it. 2. Go into fashion industry with other degrees if you want to. 3. Average Fashion industry sucks balls. They sow nothing so they reap nothing.

@sharonyeunkim Жыл бұрын
Hi! I think right now go in the general direction you are interested in and go from there. Generally speaking if you like the fashion industry and want to try it out then I would go to a fashion or design school bc it’s still in the creative realm- even if it’s not fashion design. My friends who studied fashion design branched off into fashion marketing or art direction

I am in school right now for visual communications, but I have seen so many people do quick bootcamps and getting into the industry right away. I am worried that by the time I graduate if it could be too late to get a UX job lol, do you think it is oversaturated, or is there still demand for it?
@sharonyeunkim3 жыл бұрын
oh absolutely not don't worry about there being a lack of jobs- UX is growing!! Consider a bootcamp if you can :)

@@sharonyeunkim Yeah I am just a bit too far into my 4 year degree so I am not sure about a bootcamp. I have around 1.5 years left and am also learning UX in school already. However, I am glad you think it is still growing, it might be a little more competitive now but we've got this! lol
