Garret, I truly don't know how to thank you. About a year and a half ago you posted a shorter video on this subject and I watched it several times. Only days later I was watching my 2 year old gsd finish his meal, maybe 5 minuets past without any activity and I noticed his discomfort, symptoms, and actions exactly as you described, all of them. I had him loaded in the truck, calling the emergency vet and arriving in 25 minuets. They took him in without delay, confirming the bloat and immediate surgery along with tacking the stomach. Without you posting this information I would of likely lost one of my two prize possessions. I have exclusively and continuously owned no fewer than 2 GSD's at a time since 12 years old, 65 now and never encountered this before, even with 27 years law enforcement. All I can say is Thank You!

My shepherd, Caleb, bloated at 10 years old. He was restless, panting wouldn't lay down and then we saw his stomach was distended. Got him to our emergency vet within a half hour and they were able to flip it back in time without necrosis. Had him three wonderful years more. That boy was my soul.

My Dobie girl got bloat many years ago, my parents were looking after her and Mum noticed that she was trying to be sick but couldn't, and then noticed her distended belly, I met her at the Vets, they operated and she came through the surgery, the Vet called later that night to say she wasn't doing well, they couldn't stabilize her and was basically telling us to go in and say our good byes :( Mum and I went in and were on the floor with her while she was in the crate with the door open, we were there for a while and the vet noticed that she was beginning to stabilize, eventually she was back on track and the vet kicked us out so she could get some sleep... she slept on the floor next to my baby girl to get her through the night, She was very lucky and survived, I was so glad my Mum (long time dobie owner) knew the signs when she saw them.

You might need to also mention that even though the dog didn't do any of those things you mentioned that could result in bloat, they may still get it and even when you rush with super speed to reach the vet, its still no use if you have a horrible emergency clinic near your area. My gsd didn't do anything after eating, he has three small meals that day, he was just sitting and bored and he just got it. We immediately rushed him to the vet and they kept forcing us to put him down. We insisted they do the surgery and they increased the cost by an extra 4k thinking we would back down. But still we said ok and they delayed the surgery by 2 hours while he was lying on the floor. They didn't even stabilise him during that time. Finally they did the surgery and miraculously he survived the surgery but within 48 hours he passed because of infection. Our family vet said infection will happen if it was a failed surgery. My only thought was if only we had a competent vet, my baby would still be alive. He was just 3 years old. And he fought till the end.
@ette3205
@ette3205 Ай бұрын
can you file a complaint? to have their license suspended or at least cause some damage to them... also a lawsuit to get back incorrectly conducted surgery fee + moral damage for losing pet. not for money itself, but for revenge and to help others avoid the same experience.. also write a review text mentioning that clinic and all surgeons/specialists involved, and publish on every platform (google maps - people check that, social media pages of that clinic, everywhere)...
@togo6327
@togo6327 Ай бұрын
@ette3205 no we tried.. they made us transfer him to another hospital after surgery saying they don't have CT scan available. We were so stressed that we didn't realise they were just transferring us to not take responsibility if anything happens. Then in other hospital he was fine for two days but he started getting infection. They didn't tell us till it was very late and they also told us to transfer him to critical care. The third hospital told it's too late. After all this we realised no vets wants to help save an animal. They just want to make sure they get money and not get sued. We don't have the confidence to ever get a second dog after this. The sad part is even if we like a particular vet, we cannot request for that person because they keep changing every 2 days. And you never know if you end up getting someone who has no much experience or just doesn't care.

@@togo6327 really sorry to hear all that. and hope you'll never have to go through something like that ever.. @@ette3205 Canada Ontario. You know the worst part. I would have accepted my boy dying knowing that the vets did everything they could to save him. That itself would have given me closure knowing that they were fighting to keep him alive. We all know that we have an expiration date and that's ok but seeing them not do anything and transfering the responsibility to other hospitals just so that they are not held responsible is very disheartening. Even the second hospital waited till the last minute to tell us it was too late. They were supposed to monitor him continuously for infection. I'm frustrated they have youngsters working in the emergency clinic. All in their 20s. No expertise whatsoever. We paid 16000$ out of our own pocket to save him. What's the use when they have inexperienced vets. Only one vet was good in the second hospital. He was there the first day when our boy was recovering. He was continuously monitoring him. But then he was transferred and we got some nonsense dei vet who didn't even know what he was doing. And the first hospital had all young girls who were busy putting false lashes and giggling and forcing us to put him down. People need to go for this profession not because they just want a job. They need to have a passion to save lives even if the life cannot be saved but atleast do your best. That's all we are asking.

I had a similar issues happen with my first dog. She had pyometra and no symptoms except a little more lethargic and stayed in the cool pool water. The next day she didn’t come when called; and this dog was at the level of your dogs in obedience, Garrett. I went to her and she looked dull-eyed and didn’t want to move. I rushed her to the ER and as we pulled up, her uterus ruptured and she became septic. I lost her that night. One of many reasons to spay your female dogs; especially if she’s not a breeding dog.

My first human remains detection dog (deployed via our Sheriff's Dept.) bloated. Good thing I did not go to my live-find dog's training. I would have come home to a dead dog. Instead, I rushed him to the emergency vet. Funny how they all stopped what they were doing in order to deal with my dog. An 85 pound German Shepherd Dog. I noticed all his symptoms instantly - dry heaving, drooling, discomfort, increased stomach size, digging holes in the grass. He survived surgery, and did not lose a single organ, including the spleen. 🙏❤️🐾🇺🇸🐕‍🦺

Great demo! Best I've seen on the topic. We lost our German Shepherd this way too. She ate her dinner from a bowl on the floor: wet canned and kibble back then. Didn't exercise afterwards. Had permanent access to as much water as she wanted. We all went to sleep none the wiser and found her downstairs in the morning already gone. I guess we slept through it all. 😫 She was about 6. Before that I thought it only happened to giant and Mastiff breeds. After that, it's the first place my brain goes whenever any dog looks "uncomfortable". Thanks Garrett.

Thanks for this. I lost my dog like this last year, and it's been killing me that I couldn't see the signs earlier. I saw him pacing, him walking to the gate, like he wanted to leave (which he never did). I knew something was off, but he also usually got anxious when he saw us packing for vacation (which one of us did that day, which I thought was the issue. That he just knew his favorite was going away from the house for a bit). This showed me exactly what I did wrong, and how to prevent it from happening again. He wasn't ever a very active dog, so I just didn't think it was a (as we call it) "Marley and me" situation. But he ate a large meal that night and it was later than usual (my fault) and he drank A LOT of water before bed.

This brings up some bad memories Garret. We had a big, black, beautiful Poodle/St. Bernard cross, well over 100 lbs. that we lost to bloat. Even knowing he was a high risk for getting it and being very careful about feeding/exercise, it still happened. We lived an hour away from a vet emergency clinic and by the time we got there it was too late. I’m still not sure how it happened, as we were very careful, but it did. We are now even more careful with our German Shepherd as I never want to have to experience that again. 😢 Thank you for this video, it’s a great reminder to be aware about the possibility of bloat. ❤

First symptom I saw was, strangely enough, my dog licking the carpet. Not just one spot, but she walked around the living room licking and licking the entire carpet. It was such strange behavior. Then came retching and a desperation to go outside and eat grass. She is a 50 lb, barrel-chested, Heeler/Lab cross. There were three episodes of this as a 2-yr old. Initial episode, I could only think it was some sort of indigestion. Second time, 3 months later, I noticed her drastically distended midsection, and the other symptoms you describe. Occurred again a few months after that. By then I had read a bit about bloat. I rushed her to our vet. The vet tech said “Your dog does not have bloat, because if it was bloat she would be dead.” The vet himself, I think, concluded it was “simple bloat” - which, I presume, is a precursor to full-blown bloat. Whatever it was, we were teetering on the edge; and it was frightening. Vet did recommend more frequent, smaller meals, and staying sedentary for at least an hour and a half. I do all the prevention you lay out in your video here. My dog is now 4 yrs old and has had no more such episodes. Why the carpet-licking ? Finally deduced it was her way of dealing with the excessive drool. Thank you so much, Garrett, for this important video which will surely save the lives of many dogs.

Hello, carpet licking and this " mild bloat " is perhaps because of acid reflux! (Have had couple of dogs with similar symptoms, I am a breeder with lot`s of experience)

Yes, thats one reason I free choice feed kibble to all my puppies and adults. They never gorge themselves because they know its always available when they are hungry. Its also very helpful to add digestive enzymes and probiotics to reduce gas in the stomach. Great tip on having your closest ER vet number in your phone! Ypu dont want to be scrambling through trying to find numbers in an emergency like this. Great video. Will definitely share.

I'm so sorry to hear about your police dog Garret. On Sunday 1st December 2024, I lost my Belgian Malinois Kunai to Post Surgery Shock. At some point when in the back garden, she got a hold of something without us knowing and it caused a blockage in her small intestines. We got her seen by the vet as she went off her food (she LOVES her food) and was super lethargic and really runny stools. My vet rushed her in for emergency surgery on Thursday 28th November 2024 and had to remove 30cm of necrotic small intestine as well as the blockage (a 5cm x 4cm piece of something made of the same material as flip-flops but we don't own flip-flops so we cannot identify what it is and it was about 2cm thick). She pulled through the surgery and was showing positive signs of improvement so they released her home with strict instructions the next day which was Friday 29th November. Saturday she was doing great and even had a solid toilet as well as a fair bit to eat throughout the day. Sunday morning (1st) we got her out for her meds and she could barely stand. I jumped on the phone to my vets out of hours team who were going to get the vet to call me back. As I got off the phone with them, she collapsed in the kitchen on her way into the garden for her toileting so I carried her back into her crate and called the vets back. Whilst waiting to get through, she gasped for air quite heavily 2-3 times, bit down on her favourite pink unicorn teddy and then stopped breathing. I started CPR and continued even when my partner was running her to my car. I didn't stop the CPR till we got to the vets just 3 minutes away but when we got there and they did their check, it was too late. She was already gone💔 GUYS PLEASE DO NOT IGNORE EVEN THE SLIGHTEST CHANGE IN YOUR DOGS EATING / TOILETING OR ACTIVITY LEVELS!!!!!

Great explanation of the bloat. A "must see" for any dog owner. Thank you for emphazing to NOT hesitate if you suspect bloat. Time is of the essence. AND to have that emergency vet's number in everyone's phone ahead of time is a great tip. We had a Boxer who liked inhale his food and an elevated bowl seemed to slow him down, but I didn't realize other big breeds are affected too.

You may have just saved my dog!!!She is a big barrel chested American Bully, when she is really happy she likes to roll on her back and wiggle then jump up, run in circles, roll on her back for more wiggles, and she cycles through that a few times. Recently she has started to do this after she eats (and drinks a ton of water). She looks so happy so we hate to stop her but we had heard of stomach twisting, but didn’t know much. I swear it has been in the past week that she started this after eating. Obviously, I now know that we need to stop her. Thank you for this video, you may have literally saved my dog’s life! I’m so sorry you had to experience that, but thank you for sharing this important knowledge!

Thank you for this very specific information on what it is, how it happens, and prevention. I’m paranoid about bloat, but never knew all of these details on prevention. I haven’t found anything online as detailed as this video, and this will help me, and I’m sure countless others, in caring for our large dogs. I’ve got a one year old great pyr who comes inside panting and gulping water. Now I know that isn’t good for him, and what I need to do to keep him healthy and part of our family. Thank you so much, Garrett and team!❤❤

Thank you for sharing your personal experience on this. I have been watching & enjoying & learning from your videos for some time now. We knew of bloat and that the stomach could flip and tried to make sure we did everything we could to help prevent it from happening. Unfortunately, we just lost our yellow lab Buddy on Dec. 4th. 5 days before he turned 6.5 years old. I went to bed, and he was fine. My wife woke me several hours later, saying something was wrong with Buddy. I got up and saw how bloated he was. He was pacing and whining and dry heaving. I rushed him into the emergency vet. Our worst fear became reality.🥺😢 Dogs are a gift & blessing from the Lord. Cherish every minute!

Lost my Amstaff to bloat this year 😭. He hopped off the porch after breakfast one morning while wife was leaving for work. 2 minutes later he was foaming at the mouth burping. Called the wife to asked if he ate a bee or anything. No of course. Turned around an he was blown up like a balloon. Live on an island nearest E.R. vet over an hour away. Made it to the vet but it was to late. Was told he would not make it through surgery. Found out three day later it can be fatal after 30 minutes. To find out i never had a chance to save him is crippling. Just hope the last moments with him he knew just how much he was loved.🙏 About a week later receive a thing in the mail about the rainbow bridge. Made me think of all my fur babies waiting for me. That would be one happy day.

@@Charlotte-td8qq even A small breed dog can develop this. Not as often as the large and giant breed dogs. But any dog with a deep chest can do it.
