Good points. My greatest learning experience is to only buy quality. If that means you have 1 good light instead of 4 mediocre ones, go with it. The resale market for low end gear is gone so you really don't get anywhere going cheap. Also to plan out your rig to the last piece because buying this adapter and that holder and the other bars adds up really quickly and it all ends up in the bottom of the case.

IMATESTs from CineD shows C70 to have 12.3 (&12.8) clean stops (@ 0.5/medium) roughly same as a7s iii 12.4, but the roll-offs from Canon look more organic, not sure if it's got to do with bit-depth. Do you know if it's bit depth, or the linear DR, which again CineD puts C70 at 17.1, and you mentioned 16.5. There's a difference between Canon & Sony, yet Canon seems to be slightly losing in lab tests, but not visually.

So IM no expert but heres what I found online. The canon C70 has 16 1/2 stops of advertised dynamic range and In tests Ive seen its 1 stop of dynamic range higher than the a7s3 (could be wrong but thats what I saw online). Most of these tests were done before Canon released the 12bit raw internal recording. From my understanding, when using the internal 12bit raw recording and canon clog2 theres a much greater difference. I have the Sony a7s3 and FX3 and I believe there is a noticeable difference between the cameras in picture quality and I lean towards the C70. But, I'd your own research, as IM not a expert and just go based on what I see on youtube. Hope this helped.

Finally, a review of gear that makes sense. FTR bro I also spent too much on equipment I never used. My cameras are entry level dslr and I only export 1080 so it works for me now. But I’m feeling pressured to move on 4K workflows now lol

What cameras do you shoot with, also don’t quote me on it but there is a software that upscales your HD footage to 4K. Also, HD is still the standard in most places. 4K is still a luxury. Most KZbin videos uploaded are HD. Streams are HD. Most of my clients only want HD files. Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. I use to do that, put all kinds of pressure on myself. Mark Bone is one of my fav personalities on KZbin, and he always says camera doesn’t matter. Story does. And I am aligned with that. Story is all that matters 🙌🏻

Well, it highly depends on what kind of filmmaking one will do. Narrative needs different gear than documentary, corporate or weddings, etc. So until you figure out what is your thing, you may do dumb purchases. If you do a lot of external, buy a powerful daylight lamp, and gel it to tungsten or incadescent ct the few times it's needed. Sometimes AF is important, more than color matched lenses, as color can be fixed in post, blur not so much.

You are filming movie-like stuff I think? Then you are totally right with your recommendations. In additon I really like to have internally ND filters and long battery life like the C70 has, what many simple cameras doesn't have. But there are also video pros who need higher frame rates or other features.
@theyrecord11 ай бұрын
I think we far as cameras go, it’s perfect for my needs, but not everyone’s needs that’s for sure. And these days most cameras are incredible, and obviously the fx3/fx6 is incredible as well. I think lenses and lighting is the most important thing for great picture quality. I would take a incredible lens over camera body any day of the week. Great glass for the win in my books.

So true. Thanks for the reminder. I'm just this side of 82. if I were a full-time film guy, I would opt for the C70 and Cine-N lenses in a heartbeat. I'll shortly begin a longish project shooting teacher-student interactions in kindergarten. I'm looking for tech that reveals the humanity in people - that shows their inner beauty. From 57 years in photography I know there are lenses and sensors that can do it. The big work is on my own attunement, but I like gear that won't get in the way. I'm shooting with Canon R6 and iPhone 15 Pro, getting gradually closer to making them work as I want.

57 years in photography, thats awesome! You already know a lot about framing, head start for sure! Hats off to a cool project! The best part about renting gear is you dont have to buy it and own it! At the start I would rent, later I made a couple of bucks and bought. R6 and the iphone 15 pro are incredible!

@Ovsani I’ve been a fool for most of my life and had way too much gear. Camera wise I had 5. The Fx6 was always there but not as a A or even B camera as I wanted everything in 12bit colour. But I always used it for Sports (I shoot a lot of sports) due to auto ND and cache recording. But I will say this. Now that I’m maturing, and starting to understand better I want two cameras. Ronin 4D as it does 12 bit and great for any shot you can think of and the Fx6. I’m actually selling everything else. And it feels great.

You nailed it on the head with the camera needs. At the end of the day, the only things I need in a camera are functionality and picture quality. At most 60fps usually covers any slow motion needs, and not having internal NDs is something I can't go back to with standard mirrorless cameras. The C70 has similar or better picture quality and is less expensive than the FX6, but better than the FX3. For Doc work, I don't want a tiny camera that looks bad with a handheld rig - but the FX6 is heavier than the C70. 17 clean stops of dynamic range for $4K (used) - no brainer.
@theyrecord Жыл бұрын
Agreed! I have used 60FPS once in a blue moon, 24FPS the rest of the time. For me, anything outside of that is too much, for my personal needs.

Internal 12Bit RAW to SDs? I thought internal compressed RAW was something only REDs could do. You know?...patent & all. I was actually pretty certain the C70 couldn't do RAW at all.
@theyrecord Жыл бұрын
So IM not aware of the legality of what Red can do, but I can assure you 100% that the C70 does internal 12bit raw LT and ST. I know this because I use it all the time. When the c70 came out, it couldn't, and Canon released an update that allowed it to do so maybe a year ago? Not really sure of the exact time, and that's the main reason I bought it, after that update.
@JoePlomo Жыл бұрын
@@theyrecord True! I dug a bit after watching your video to find that just like Black Magic Design did to work around RED’s patent, Canon developed their own version of RAW which they had implemented in their C200 MkII (partially debayers in camera to avoid patent infringement). I just wasn’t aware that they had added it to the C70 via firmware update (pretty cool). However, as a SONY user I truly believe that if someone can do without AF & IS Black Magic is the clear choice. Thanks for the video & amazing job with “Austin”. Duuude!!!

What wrong did the proper canon cine bodies do. C70 is just repurposed overpriced mirrorless tech. You've jumped so many brands like that, which just shows you never really valued properly understanding colour tones and feel of your cameras .. you could have picked up a ursa 12k i just dont get how you say c70 have commendable image quality 😅... It grts your job done yea. But man if you're happy with your C70 that's good. But don't mention other brands like that and put C70 on a place over other all, where it doesn't deserve to be highlighted like that... It is just your subjective taste and opinion. I'm happy with my blackmagic system too and I personally think C70 is full trash :) and fuji was also great except for the noise and low light and so are super clean and technical cine lenses but again that all depend on what niche you're working with and your preferences ofcourse. But it's all subjective, everyone makes good cameras and there's a place and use for it all, the proper knowledge to share is to encourage people to work out their use-case and what is best offered by who. Yes buying the next cool shit and chasing specs is bad. But it all comes down to colour taste and how you like your log files and codecs on grade really. But you've made it clear you dont like working with colour grades there so 👍. Its a journey for everyone, yes its good tip, but I just got " sponsor" written all over the way you talked and your script and how you showcased the gear and shot selection. Hope i dont grt reccomended this again 😆. Good luck bro. But please there is a very good market out there. If you have the money to spend on canon cines have a look at mavo atleast. Also meike makes some pretty darn good matched cine lenses, so does nisi with their athenas as well. So please do t put a c70 next to ursa 12k nd blackmagic codec and colours by the way you present all the brands by commenting on them...
@theyrecord11 ай бұрын
Hey thanks for this great comment. I agree with a lot of what you're saying. Here's my breakdown. I never bad mouthed any brands, I simply said "I jumped from brand to brand always chasing the next thing." Meaning I am the problem, not the brands, I made a video here saying "lenses and light make great picture quality, and if I knew this back then, I'd stay with my original camera." Also, the C70 is right for me, for one reason and one reason only, the Raw 12 bit workflow to SD. And thats for my needs. Blackmagic is great, actually my fav camera brand because of what they stand for. I had a pocket 6k and 4k, thought about the 12k but passed as thats too much camera for me. I left Blackmagic because I became a one man band and it was easier to do client work with the Sony FX3 but the picture quality wasnt as good. The canon CN-E lenses have no character, and thats just it, for my corporate high key look, thats whats needed for my needs. They are expensive, I agree but I bought mine used on facebook market at around $2,500 per lens and that was somewhat affordable. The main reason I got them was because they are fast lenses from t1.3-T1.5. Basically IM on the same page and agree with a lot of what you said, and thank you for the comment. Here's the video where I say lenses and lighting are all that matters and I wish I knew that before bouncing around from brand to brand. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z57TfICli8t8sLcsi=JNkQvo51fghSounf
