This applies 100% to my situation. Should have taken better breaks during production of my latest two songs. Months later I realise I worked inefficiently and could have saved time with proper breaks. The takeaway for me is to plan breaks and have clear goals with each session. Do that and don't mess about aside from that. This is helping me a lot currently and will ensure Fabio doesn't have to 'fix it in the mix' when I'll send it to him when it's done haha.

I am so gobsmacked by this. For years I would finish a mixing/recording session always dissatisfied with my tracks not sounding bright or clear enough. When I would revisit these at another time I would always notice they sound so much better. Knowing that this is a thing is definitely going to boost my morale when I come to the end of a session and make me more efficient

Thanks for this! I would also differentiation between breaks from sound altogether and breaks from the one mix you're working on - like I find it really important to take a quick break from my mix and listen, even just for a few seconds, to a released track I know and love to reset my ears, and ALSO take the full breaks you refer to here.

One of the hardest things to do, just walk away for a bit, when you're ploughing through :). Good advice, as usual.

Whats your say on swapping from monitors to headphones and vice versa in order to get a balanced mix in both? Some sounds are more noticeable at times/too much in headphones but through the monitors sounds fine. I use KRK RP5'S AND HD25's so the bass is usually much louder in headphones as the rp5's lack sub range. Is it recommended to do this?

I like using open backed headphones, and find my monitors not great TBH - at least in combination with no accoustic treatment, not having that much flexibility over how to position them. I'll take on board your point about volume though. Depends what I'm doing to some extent as to which I use. And everything about breaks is a good reminder. I don't know why it's so hard to get the basics right sometimes. Thanks, Fabio!

For long session with headphones, I use waves Nx plug in. That’s create binaural speaker and hide the big pressure of the sound on each hear. When you turn head, with help of your webcam, it turn the perception. And I use open headphones too, let the sound of the room enter and that a lot for long sessions.

Any advice for producer/dj's to protect ears while djing or in a club? Are there any next gen earplugs im not aware of?
@DJ.Shrimp4 жыл бұрын
www.etymotic.com/consumer/hearing-protection/erme.html - you need to go to a audiologist to get them fitted. Custom molds for $210 where I am at - so cheap to save your hearing. Last for years and years.

Hi there! Noobie quesrion: Wheb record my guitar on reaper and make loops, every time y add either another guitar track or any other instrument, it starts to sound worse. Kind of like distorted, or clipping, I don’t know the right term. What do i have to do? Compression? Eq? Both? Lower volume?
@HenrySkye14 жыл бұрын
It sounds like your input gain is a bit too high on your audio interface so it’s clipping as it’s being recorded. Try turning that down so it doesn’t go into the red, so the DAW channel gain -6db as a good place to start, cause you can always decrease the audio file in the DAW later

I will also recommend that you also be very very careful with your monitor mixes. I made a dumb mistake of removing a pad on a channel while wearing some headphones and let's just say I will forever be excessively careful to fader up new mix elements. Feedback can be dangerous.

But i think before i had monitors i damaged my ears with headphones. now my ears getting tired and sometimes even getting disturbed from little sound from tv etc. i also have a high pitched buzzing sound always in my ears. What should i do do you think ?

I appreciate your awareness and efforts here, and it's a great video, but none of these tips are helping in my situation and I just need to see a doctor. I don't have tinnitus but my ears are extra sensitive; only when I mix. It's at the point where I need to wear earplugs in normal life so that I can mix in my spare time. And I'm not overdoing it - maybe an hour or two a day? My speakers are six feet away and I keep them less than 50 dB at all times (I used to be about 60-70 dB). I have no idea what the issue is and really hope that a doctor can help me out.

Hey, i am kinda facing same situation right now, i have been actively watching classes, now although i always keep the speaker at 50% volume, i do have tinnitus and feeling a listening fatigue....what to do bro?
@mattbmichaelis3 ай бұрын
@@tawseef8755 this was a long time ago. Unfortunately the answer for me was I took about a year off from mixing. Now I do less projects; before i was doing it every day. Doing it less helped a lot. My ears have healed a lot. But I would never be able to do it that much as I was before.

Some people suggest mixing really quiet, and if he sounds good quiet it'll sound better loud? Not that I ever so this 😅😅

just gotta *crank* down the knob to -64 db and then spend hours trying to mix while barely hearing shit and then CRANK the volume back up
