I am also volunteering at a level one trauma center. Except I’m a little bit of a non traditional student in that I work full time at a university and I am a part time dual masters student. so 2 questions for both, i guess! i am currently trying to decide if i want to pursue my pa license or go to medical school (i have a very "unique" set of circumstances that have led me to want to pursue medicine). i am not having any trouble finding shadowing experience. i have yet to volunteer, but i am quite sure i could get some volunteer experience in with some of the "best of the best" drs as well. 1. if you get your phlebotomy certification, does that count as "experience" or is that looked down upon because it would most likely be a paid job? 2. does shadowing any dental specialists count or is that just thrown out the window because "that's for dentists!" i ask because i find endodontics fascinating but i am not really interested in the rest of dentistry; but i wonder if i were to shadow an endodontist if that would help me just insofar as "oh, she tried that and it wasn't for her" or maybe because it would change my mind? i hope what i am trying to say there is getting through! thanks much!! extra question i just thought of: 3. what is the difference in liability between doctors and PAs; how does malpractice insurance work for PAs and is there a difference in which has more liability if something is "missed" or something goes awry with a patient, &c. thanks again!

I feel pretty lucky to be a paramedic before deciding to go to PA school. Working on bachelors now, but by the end of the bachelors program I should have over 20,000 patient care hours, and we get to encounter tons of ER physicians, some of the most renowned cardiologists and that opens up tons of opportunities to get great letters of recommendations. But on top of the patient care hours and shadowing hours, do you have any further tips for building a strong application for PA?

Is it beneficial to shadow or intern different specialties? I know these are requirements for my pa school for when you get to the actual school, but doing it pre-pa looks really great on applications as well. For example, I wanted to shadow at an addiction medicine inpatient center, a mental health case manager (that’s what my cousin does), and family medicine. I had some other specialties in mind as well like derm and Asian medicine. All for a couple months each. In my university they start introducing the thought of interning your freshman year. So I have 4 years as a whole to build up my experiences.
