Hey friends! Welcome to another episode of the "unsettling series" :) Today, we'll be taking a look at the frozen wonderland of Sector Zero in Subnautica Below Zero and the disturbing facts/theories it hides! I'll be talking about the implications of void chelicerates, the sad story of Mercury II, how Alterra seemingly dooms the universe going forward, and how the ending of the game effectively shows how close we could've been to a potential cure.
Chapters:
00:00 - Intro
00:47 - Void Chelicerate Wounds
02:31 - The Tragic Story of Mercury II
04:22 - Alterra Dooms the Universe
05:35 - The Cure Was So Close
07:18 - Outro
Thank you for watching, come back again!

I have 2 theories on how Marguerit(idk how to spell her name) survived 1: All leviathans have some sort of anti-kharaa enzyme, but the Sea Emperor's is the only one capable of curing it, and Marguerit ate a lot of Reaper meat so thats how she was able to survive 2: The reaper Marguerit was on has eaten the peepers that had the enzyme, making it so when Marguerit ate its meat, she got some of the enzymes the peepers had
@TheLastBacon

Maybe - but even then she would've only eaten the incomplete enzyme - we know it slows the infection but I'm not sure it would slow it down for 10+ years :)

The biggest irony of the Mercury II is definitely the guy that pointed them there in the first place like “alien architecture means alien language!” And then the PDA later like “why did we land here? How could this ever have happened?!” Like boy that was you!!! It’s literally your own fault you will never see your kids or wife again!!!

You're not wrong yeah - they made several bad decisions along the way :)
@brianbommarito3376
@brianbommarito3376 Жыл бұрын
Correct, but they did not appear to be immediately bad decisions at the time. One thing all the ships that have crashed on 4546B have in common, they are all caught by complete surprise. There comes a moment when a decision must be made, and there’s no immediate signs or evidence that something will go wrong. Indeed, quite the opposite. Admittedly, they should’ve been more cautious. But I think even then, what happened to them all is so wild that no amount of data from outside the planet could have prepared them for what was about to happen. When the worst did happen, it happened so quickly that their chances of survival were almost completely decimated in the blink of an eye. “From the height of luxury to the worst desperation in a single lousy choice.”

My theory is the red patches on the void leviathans is part of the original shell. Something like a food source causes a nutritional deficiency or mutation and causes the original shell to flake off. Maybe they have to molt to continue growing as well.

I like your thinking! Maybe eventually it peels off yeah :)
@cursedhawkins1305

That would imply that the Chelicerates are part snake which they appear not to be related at all as the name originates from the Chelicerata which are a group of underwater animals ranging from Spiders to Crabs that were once Predators themselves but have now a days are either Herbivores, Parasites or Scavengers to get their nutrients as most Chelicerata have guts that are too narrow to handle solid food, so the Chelicerates in Subnautica that are capable of eating solid food like the player or any other animal they come across are literally the 1% of the Chelicerata family that CAN handle solid food, which are called "Harvestmen" which are again Spiders so Chelicerates probably evolved from 4546B's form of a sea Spider... yeah have fun sleeping now. Edit: in fact there's even this little tidbit on its design section of the fandom page. "The elements that make up the body resemble those of a Eurypterid, whilst the body's shape is shark-like. The creature's four claw-like jaws are based on the chelicerae that give the taxonomic group its name, and appear to be based on the jaws of solfugae ("camel spiders")." So REALLY have fun sleeping now.

Aww yeah I knew all of these :D Void Chelicerate: they might become more territorial out in the void? Less to eat, so more of a fight to survive. Within Sector Zero itself, there's enough food for them to coexist. Mercury II: god the whole story is just heartbreaking. And being in the ship fragments themselves is just... super chilling, pun unintended. Kharaa: WAY TO GO ALTERRA. Yeah they 100% doomed everyone. The cure: heh, I once jokingly said that Marg survived because Death was too scared to go near her. Obraxis replied to me within three minutes saying that, yeah, Death is PRETTY scared of her. I remember in the beta days before the story rework, where everyone was patiently waiting for that one missing log from Maida that explained how she survived Kharaa, but also Sea Emperors weren't removed back then. I find it unlikely Maida got cured, but she definitely got some sort of treatment - either from her extremely meat based diet, or from some other source of anti-kharaa material. After all, how is the Below Zero area even alive without anything to prevent Kharaa? If it is a leviathan... Maida might have killed and eaten it
@TheLastBacon

The only explanation I can think of for Below Zero - is that it wasn't actually alive, it was all just unhatched eggs that (similarly to the emperor) waited for the right conditions :)

Honestly I hope that in subnautica 3 the leviathans roam either in a MUCH larger area or just roam everywhere on the map. it would make it much more difficult and terrifying when you never know where the leviathan could be. it got really boring after memorizing where the reapers, ghosts and chelicerates spawned and roamed. I was just thinking about how cool it would be if the 3rd game was multilayer and you could go through the void to 3 different below zero sized maps in which each had there own ecosystem and maybe even an alpha leviathan creature on each (Alpha leviathan being the king of the island or something). It could go around the map searching for the places or eating other leviathans. If we did have multiplayer void exploration the atlas could be the perfect vessel to add to the game. I know this has absolutely nothing to do with the video but I would like to see other people's theories about what our 3rd game could be about.

I personally believe that there would be larger creatures down there in the void, but that they don't come anywhere near the surface so it's impossible for you to know they exist. A giant ghost leviathan, sure, but i'm thinking of brand new species with possibly hundreds of millions of years of evolution apart from the creatures we see in the crater of the first game.

In regards to the first theory- I'm all down for colossal void leviathans (as the PDA says only microscopic and leviathan class live in the void) but would like to point out that Ghost Leviathans eat microscopic organisms by swimming around big empty waters (similarly to a whale) which implies something else hurts and eats the Chelicerates :) Perhaps Chelicerate's truly are the "small shrimp of the sea" to other void creatures-

Below Zero in general seems like a connection between Subnautica and Natural Selection I remember another youtuber compared the Void Chelicerates scars to the scars left on sperm whales by giant squids, theres a theory that says the exoskeleton of Chelicerates is like that of a species of crustacean, the creature grows but the exoskeleton doesnt, this obviously is part of the theory thats says Void Chelicerates are older version of normal Chelicerates Last it was softly implied that Sam and Robin efforts to destroy the Kharaa on the Frozen Leviathan were useless, if you read the Frozen Leviathan complete entry it says: "Since the enzyme cure was released on 4546B the bacterium has been all but eliminated. Rare specimens like these provide our only live source." It implies the existence of other specimens infected with Kharaa still present on the planet, Sam and Robin maybe slowed down a bit the research, but didnt stopped Alterra

My theory is that Margaret survived because the Reapers also produce Enzyme 42 or something similar enough to neutralize Kharaa and that her eating that Reaper on the way to Sector Zero cured her. Once in Sector Zero she seems to have shifted to a mostly vegetarian diet and stayed in her base, so she would have avoided reexposure from infected fish or water. Or she may have had residual resistance from the Reaper meat. It’s also possible all Leviathan class organisms by the time of the game produce some form of Enzyme 42 as you never see Reapers, Ghosts or Sea Dragons infected with Kharaa. Although if eating Reaper meat cures Kharaa that could explain why the Sea Dragons survived, and could even be why they seem to preferentially hunt Reapers. As for why the Architects focused on the Sea Emperor instead of Reapers I think there’s evidence the Reapers weren’t around 1000 years ago, and either they are recently evolved, a product of Kharaa attempting to evolve more aggressive organisms, or they moved into the Crater as Kharaa destroyed competing species. The evidence is the Reaper is the only species in Subnautica that the Architects did not collect eggs of for their kharaa research, and we know it’s not because they had more sense than to antagonize the local megafauna because they collected Sea Dragon eggs. In addition the end goal of the Architects was to eradicate Kharaa, toward that end the Sea Emperor’s tendency to passively distribute Enzyme 42 into the surrounding water is more useful than Reaper meat, which would require someone or something to actively hunt Reapers and reduce their meat to a size the local fauna could eat, and wouldn’t cure vegetarian fauna (not that there’s much of that in the ocean).
@TheLastBacon
@TheLastBacon Жыл бұрын
I like the theory - but I'm not sure about some parts of it :) - I don't think reapers are that recent of a creature, especially since they appear to be a key part of the sea dragon life cycle - With that in mind, it would be strange for the precursors to not even mention them in passing if they happened to be one of the only two creatures they've found to that point to cure kharaa - For the eggs, I think it's possible that reapers just don't lay eggs as evident by the fact that even we can't find them
@cathygrandstaff1957
@cathygrandstaff1957 Жыл бұрын
@@TheLastBacon Yeah but keep in mind the Sea Dragons’ behavior was theorized in game to have changed recently as a result of Kharaa devastating the subterranean ecosystem that the sea dragons depended on. This is evidenced by the sheer number of large skeletons in the Lost River representing Leviathan class organisms that have gone extinct due to Kharaa that Sea Dragons might have fed on prior to Reapers appearing on scene. The Reaper biology itself is not consistent with the habitat it appears in. Its coloration is based on the oarfish, a real life species that lives in the deep sea, and the Reaper’s lack of bioluminescence and reliance on sonar for hunting both suggest it evolved for a lightless area, probably the depths of the ecological dead zone. To me it looks like a species that most likely recently moved into the crater habitat to take advantage of the local apex predators being wiped out by kharaa and hasn’t had time to evolve to take advantage of the increased light levels. I’ve heard the theory that Reapers simply don’t lay eggs, possibly being an ovoviviparous species like some species of shark. It’s also possible that if Reapers were originally a deep sea species they might return to the deep sea to reproduce, although I think that’s very unlikely. I’ve also read a theory that the Aurora randomly landed smack on top of the Reaper’s spawning area and this is why you don’t find eggs but do find a lot of angry adult Reapers clustered around the Aurora, all the eggs got vaporized on impact and the moms are pissed off. We do know the Reapers were having young during the time the Degasi were there because Margaret captures a juvenile Reaper which is what prompts the adult Reaper attack. Also if we take one of the first game’s trailers as canon, we know that Bart Torgal lived to see the Aurora’s arrival on 4546B and was immediately killed by the impact as his sea base was in the impact site and apparently destroyed badly enough we don’t even find wreckage. So somehow he had, if not figured out a cure, at least prolonged his life to the time the original game took place in.

The real tragedy of the cure was that Marge may have contributed in preventing it. She encouraged Sam to sabotage Alterra instead of sneaking in and testing her cure, which worked (as far as we know; inb4 a sequel says otherwise). Beyond that, I often think about how Sam's fate is all hearsay; you never see her body, you're told what happened to her by someone else, and the cave-in is cleaned up before you even arrive, with Sam's necklace neatly and specifically placed on a table for you to find. Occam's Razor says Sam is simply dead, but I can't shake the possibility that her and Parvan's deaths were faked and the investigator was in on it somehow. I cannot believe for a second the thought "I should get away from this explosive before I detonate it" wouldn't have crossed Sam's mind, which then would have immediately formed the question "How can I activate an explosion from far away?" I find it a little interesting that there's a Spy Pengwing in the cave, and any explosives could have easily been delivered and detonated remotely using her robots--her primary area of development, the thing she's been focusing on for a long time at this outpost. They even have a self-destruct function! It had to have occurred to her! Part of it is hopeful, wishful thinking, but the other part is a desire to see this iceberg go deeper!

my explanation theory on the first part ( Void Chelicerate wounds) of the video is that because of limited food resources in the void, these beasts will opt to go for cannibalism and will hunt/eat their own kind as a survival instinct just like normal animals in the world, and because of that, the void Chelicerate would hunt each other as a means for survival, and that explains why there aren't many void Chelicerate in the void and for the remaining void Chelicerate wounds.

In the game there is an antidote for Kharaa. And it's made from two common plants. That is probably how Marguerit was cured, although I'm unsure how she survived long enough to actually get to sector zero and eventually come into contact with the plants. It is probably also the reason that zector zero seemingly survived without pipes for enzyme-peepers.

i have a theory about both games. 1: subnautica takes place in a huge crater. when you leave that crater, you meet nothing but an endless pitch-black void. my theory is there are lots of HUGE craters around the world. yes, im saying 4546b was originally a hot planet with burning temperatures. and the land was wherever the void ended. MASSIVE volcanoes. 2: subnautica below zero is an incredible game. the temp is so cold that it made a few icy land. i have an insane theory about it. when the precursors first came, they discovered that the land was full of water. but they had no idea that they were building on a literal volcano. LOTS years ago, before the persian war, before humans were made, this planet was formed by steaming hot rocks, which caused no life cycles in it, but then a HUGE cold asteroid smashed into the planet... MAKING SECTOR 0, and the rest of the planet water, the volcanoes stopped working, the asteroid made life on 4546b. add-up: way before humans were made, a huge asteroid crashed on a planet with steaming hot temps. that asteroid was really cold and big, so it made sector 0. it completely changed the atmospshere and land into water, allowing an ecosystem to be made there, then the precursors came. reply your thoughts on my theory if im right or wrong! btw i might make a kharaa theory
