Loved the series. I doubt we will ever get to Dirk Hartog ourselves so this was the next best alternative. Although your trip across the bay was a bit rough, you were pretty lucky. Conditions there can look great from the land and be a real shocker once you are half way across. We tried it years back with our old half cabin and it was so bad we had to turn back to Denham. Being a boatie I really enjoyed the inclusion of the boat in the series. Going to places like that without a boat would be like eating a pizza with no cheese :)

Great content as always Ronnie. If you wanna get serious with the wakeboarding try weighing down the aft of the boat for a bigger bow wave to pull tricks off. I rode passenger in Sweden with a guy who did a full backflip from one side of the bow wave to the other, though he taught the sport and was using I think 2*100L barrels of water for weight and carried extra fuel as it works the motor pretty hard.

I’ll be the party pooper and say the crossing to Denham in those conditions was dangerous. An inexperienced skipper in an unfamiliar boat, in an unfamiliar remote environment, in conditions beyond his capabilities, relying on electronics, not knowing the weather forecast, thats a recipe for a boating tragedy. Things go down hill really fast on the water, one small things leads to another, and next minute your swimming for your life in shark bay. What’s your plan for being swamped in those conditions, electronics failure, engine failure? From someone who has spent a lot of time on the water that crossing made me cringe.

Beautiful island but WA really needs to do more with Tourism with some of it's islands. So basic with little though in attracting national and international tourists. Hell Rottnest doesn't even have a marina or decent hotel and that's right on Perth's doorstep!!
@ianmoone23595 жыл бұрын
4orl2c Having managed an offshore Island fishing resort & pearl farm in WA, I can tell you from first hand experience that the logistics of running a resort on an offshore island like are bloody tough. Carting your own fuel, food etc, producing your own power, desalination freshwater. Like DHI, we had no jetty to unload anything bulky or heavy from a delivery vessel, which means everything has to be man handled up beaches & dunes, unloaded with a gin pole using tides etc. It’s a LOT harder than many realise! Keiran & Tory Wardell do a bloody fantastic job running DHI Lodge, and have done for decades now. There are non better than these 2 and no better Island location than DHI. The Barge has opened things up to groups like Ronnie’s here & made it much more accessible. I think if it were developed as some want it would lose a lot of its remote charm! Imagine if the road to steep point were bituminised & there was a bridge over Blind Straight connecting DHI to the mainland! It would be a zoo over there with hundreds of vehicles / day back & forth, litter lining every track edge etc. Some places are better kept remote & DHI is one of those places IMHO. Let all the Aussie bogans keep going to Bali & keep these places unspoiled for the adventurous intrepid traveler like Ronnie & his crew! We don’t need herds of foreign tourists screwing up all the last beautiful unspoiled places like DHI in West Oz. That’s how I see it! The Abrolhos, DHI, Mackerel Islands, Marion’s, Forestier group, Bernier & Dorre, Burrup Monties, etc keep them for those intrepid souls prepared to do the hard yards & make the effort (& expense) to get there! Look at the recent Charles Wooly expose on 4 corners of all the luxury resorts on Qld Great Barrier Reef resorts laying in ruins after being hit by cyclones, that aren’t viable to restore, because of the cheap holidays available on places like Bali where all the bogans go to mess up, get drunk, fight & destroy the joint! We don’t want that sh!t here in WA on our pristine islands like DHI. My 2C
@4orl2c685 жыл бұрын
Spoken like a true West Australian Ian. We've managed to keep things so pristine no one bothers to come here anymore. WA is massive so unlocking sites to a wider audience is what we need to do to move forward with Tourism in WA. And why does everyone always look to Qld as a disaster with tourism, there are plenty of places here and abroad that have done it right. Tourism development done right doesn't necessarily need to be destructive. Your last line says it all and is a perfect reflection of a lot of West Australians mindset. Keep the blinkers on then, we will continue to fall behind everyone else.
@ianmoone23595 жыл бұрын
4orl2c I’ve worked in Tourism in WA for approaching 40 years now, been on tourism committees & run my own tour businesses - including charters on offshore islands. I’ve probably forgotten more about this topic than you will ever know. Western Australia has some real physical drawbacks for tourism from the worlds biggest potential markets. For a start we are 50% of the landmass size of the continental USA with only 2 million population out of Oz’s ~25million, compared to USA’s -~300 million! The tyranny of distance is the enemy of tourism, for WA. Brought a guy out from Florida to West Moore Island off Balla balla to fish! He was 45 hours in the air ONE WAY from Florida to Karratha Airport! Fla - LA LA - Hawaii Hawaii - Auckland Auckland - Skidknee Skidknee - Perth Perth - Karratha Same on his return journey -another 45 hours in the air. Cheapest flights available over $3k Yanks only get 2 weeks annual vacation - so 4 of his 14 days lost just getting here & getting back home! Then you need to throw in the vast distances by road they have to travel once they get here, there are more days “lost” on the road in WA just getting between places of interest to see! So that 2 weeks US vacation ends up being just a week of actual holidaying, once all the travel is taken out! Then there’s world parity pricing on our fuel! In a nation & state like WA where the tyranny of distance is the enemy of tourism, you don’t need excessively high prices of fuel to further deter tourists! There’s a reason why 99% of the tourists who come to Oz venture no further than the east coast & Uluru in the Center! That’s their holiday time used up, they haven’t got the luxury of 4 weeks leave needed to be able to explore West Oz! So that’s why WA doesn’t see the vast international tourists that are needed to make tough logistical holidays to remote Islands viable fiscally. You will never achieve the numbers! Next is the fact we are on the west coast so all these islands are barren waterless wastelands. They aren’t like the lush tropical oasis of the GBR islands in Qld & as we have seen even those can’t compete against Bali. WA has its own lush tropical island holiday destination in the Cocos Keeling Islands, with air strip etc! It’s about $7k minimum to fly there and back & rent a chalet / cabin for 10 days, and being Australian Capital Territory, you don’t even need a passport to go, your photo drivers license ie 100 points of ID will get you there from Perth. About the ONLY viable highly populous nations we could attract tourism numbers from us in our own Timezone- so Perth Singapore Chinese Taipei or GMT + 8. If it were viable to do tourism on offshore Islands in WA it would already being done, & I’d have plowed a few $millions into seating it up already, but as an investment it’s just not viable! Look at Barry Humphreys from Geraldton the multi millionaire real estate developer - he got WA Govt approval to build a tourist lodge at the Houtman Abrolhos Islands including approval from the EPA, and it was to be built on Long Island. All these years later and nothings been built! It’s not viable! As you’ve said, they can’t even manage it on Rottnest with govt backing! I once shared your enthusiasm for this idea & plowed a lot of my own $ into trying to make a go of it myself! I brought tourism operators out of USA, NZ, & Europe, & they all came to the same conclusion - too far away, too expensive & the Tyranny of distance! There are lots of places in the world where your tourism $ goes a lot further than if you come to WA, Bali being just one of them. The Cocos struggle to make profits, DHI likewise. West Moore was no different when I ran it. Mackerels the same, Abrolhos the same etc. Prove me wrong, go & invest some of your own $ and get the commercial skippers ticket & 2C surveyed passenger vessel to convey these tourists to a resort you build on any island off the WA coast, and see how you get on? Heck even penguin island, you can walk to that and it can’t turn a profit! Woody Island off Esperance, heck there’s the whole Recherce Archipellago that could have resorts on them! It’s a pipe dream, & your not the first one to have it & wont be the last one either. It’s a nice pipe dream - not knocking you for having it, just trying to point out that a lot of good people have already had a go and failed, because of the tyranny of distance! It cost me a sh!t ton of $ to get this first hand experience, I’ve lived on the Abrolhos on and off over 15 years, with the cray industry, including getting Starlo & Bushy over there to film their hooked on adventure series - been and stayed on DHI back in 2000 with Morsie (Wildfish) for the original “Boneheads” expedition, staying with DHI lodge owners Kieran & Tory Wardell, then managed West Moore Island Fishing Resort & Pearl Farm off Balla Balla etc. If it could be done, I’d be doing it, trust me! 😉👍👍
@twinklefinger62665 жыл бұрын
Wow, that's a nice sermon Ian. It sounds more like you need to go into some other business because tourism ain't your thing. There are quite a few places on the planet that have faced serious adversity and succeeded, West Australians are just lazy and too use too the good life too try...! WA...lazy....arrogant...!!
