We also have a fairly drafty cabin with gaps around doors. Something we do is put long skinny ‘pillow’ like things on the floors right against the doors to block the drafts. I made them with fabric and any kind of stuffing, to form a long tube that lays in front of the door and stops some of the air from moving into the living space. I can send a picture if this isnt clear, but they really do help quite a lot.

Love the cabin! Have you heard of a draft excluder? Lots of old homes here in England use them at the bottom of doors to stop the cold wind coming through. As well as thick heavy curtains across doors to keep the cold out and heat in. 😊

I was just about to tip Kalle on the same thing, in Sweden we call it Dragkorvar and the best thing is that you can make them of your own, just sew a big long "Korv" and fill it with sand.

Morning from the UK Kalle. WOW even after watching all of your videos I hadn’t realised how much more of your beautiful cabin I hadn’t seen. Every inch holds a memory, the true mark of a great home. You should feel really proud of everything you have achieved. I have to laugh because here in the UK house prices have become ridiculous. I see houses that were bought 2 years ago now on the market and selling for 200k more. Your picture perfect home would be worth millions over here. So sharing this full tour is all the more magical to watch and see a property with soul that is priceless not because of the geographical location but because of the love you have given it, it reminds us Brits how a home should be regarded rather than a place to be used for financial gains. On a separate note, do you know about the hot brick trick? Place a brick in foil into your oven or on your fire, you can then use it as a hot water bottle, in the bed, or anywhere else you need heat. Ensure there is a good amount of foil so it doesn’t burn any wood! If too dangerous use a hot water bottle by boiling the water on the fire stove. Also have you ever thought of adding water pipework to the stove so it heats up pipes around your home and acts as central heating?

The metal mesh you are hanging the lights from is called reinforcing mesh, and is used for all sorts of handy things, but was invented to reinforce concrete, especially in concrete flooring, or concrete driveways to homes, to make them much stronger. In Australia, we shorten just about every word, so it's called "reo mesh"...or even just "reo"! As in "What about hangin' y' lights from a hit o' reo? That'd be okay." You did ask...! 😁👍❤🦘 I really enjoyed the video...and l love the lights...hangin' from the reo, like that...so good, mate! 😊💡💡💡God bless you.

Love that you have almost no bought furniture 🤎 And the rooms are so spacious and cosy at the same time. Reminds me of a small farmhouse I lived in for a while in the Swiss mountains - it had a green wool carpet in the living room that made you feel it was grass or moss indoors, and so much art on the walls that had been payment for the organic veg grown in the garden. It was heated by a typical tiled stove that served both kitchen and living room. The attic with low windows had simply been painted white, it was beautiful. Very fond memories! Touches that make a house a home, like you have, too.

Thank you for the tour of your cozy cabin :) So many beautiful solutions. I thought to share a couple things that I thought might be helpful. We have a similar door crack in our little mountain cabin -- we roll up a thick towel and put against it, so there is no draft of cold air. Not the same as a perfectly insulated door, but greatly reduces heat loss. I also wanted to suggest to look into a Russian stove which is known for a great heating quality and retention. I realize it'd be a huge project to rebuild a stove, but may be some aspects of the design could be useful. Lastly, I wanted to mention that we use wood ash in our garden and it makes a great fertilizer.

I realise this video is a year old, but a tip to protect your floors when emptying the ash into the bucket is to lay some tiles infront of your wood stove, and fireplace. Or old bricks. ( about two bricks deep.) you can find old tiles or old bricks - you can keep your cosy cabin feel, but keep yourhome safe.( my grandpa was a firefighter but always had a wood stove in the house, and spare cabin) so they always had the stove raised on bricks. Fireplaces also had a row of bricks in front. ( river rock works out good as well) - my girlfriend had river rock around their wood stove and fireplace- also good behind kitchen stove.

The little wood oven is super cute. It surprises me that in such a cold climate it seems quite common to have such little wood ovens to cook on, rather then a big wood oven you load up to keep going day/night. Your cabin is lovely and cosy.

In the old days we used long tubes, made of left over fabric, filled with whatever cloth scraps or wool remnants we had, and we would put them down where the door meets the floor and also at the base of the windows. Keeps the draft out of the room

Such a beautiful renovation.....it definitely has a woman's touch. The kitchen and bedroom are my favorite. Kalle, Thank you for the tour. I love the looks and layout of your cabin. I can sympathize with the cold hallway, studio and bedroom! I grew up in a farmhouse, built about 1835, with one heating register in the front hall, right in front of the stair door. That door was kept closed most of the winter to keep the heat downstairs. I have delusions of living simply, but in truth am a packrat. You give me hope that I can change. You and Christine inspire me to do better.

Great job creating a cozy cabin, I love it! Just a suggestion, the places you hit your head, take some soft leather and cut it like fringe and tack it to the beams. That way you should feel the tickles before you hit your head.

For the gap in your door to the hallway we have a draft excluder .. you can buy one or you can use and old blanket or towel roll it up and block the draft it won’t completely stop it but will help a bit hopefully 🙏

We always had a window escape ladder when our kiddos slept upstairs. We'd have a fire drill a couple times a yr. You guys may want to consider one they collapse and you can just keep in a drawer or the corner or under the bed. They just latch on the window ledge and unfold down the outside. Ours was metal.

A tip for you cos we do this here (it's an old house) you can make a draught excluder with 2 old (long) socks stuff them with rags or whatever you like sew the open ends of the socks together then you can just put them against the door where the draught /gap is it will keep the heat in :@)

Love the rope hanging shelves. Might steal that idea. Just wanted to say in case you didn’t know, it can be dangerous to keep a bucket of hot ash indoors...my husband was a firefighter and came across situations where folk had been poisoned due to carbon monoxide seeping from hot ash buckets...so they should always be put outside the living area. Also if your stove is anything like ours and doesn’t have its own piped in air supply, you would need to have that gap under the door to allow a good flow of air to feed the stove. We have draughty old windows that feed air into the rim for our stove, but we were told if we get double glazing windows fitted we would need to get a piped air supply for the stove. I love what you have done to the cabin, it’s great seeing it transforming into a home. May the force be with you. 💚🙏💚
