I heard that bmw used to leave their engines in the rain outside to “season” the block before building them up for racing. So this should be a reliable engine 😉
@Spooly_4 жыл бұрын
Don't want them to be pampered, getting too comfortable, gotta put them in their place.
@AKAtheA4 жыл бұрын
that was only for the F1 race engines back in the day when F1 cars were angry turbocharged 1000+hp monsters. The blocks were taken from cars that drove quite some distance and left outside, the reasoning was that any fault would have shown itself by then...if it was still good = flawless block, ready to be destroyed after one race ;-)
@shazadbukhari72914 жыл бұрын
Yes that was for the M series engine on old E30 actually Not only rain, in the documentary the German technician said we even urinated on it few times 😂. Apparently it was because the first version block was prone to cracking or something. So they made a new version and part of the testing phase was to leave it outside in freezing conditions etc.
@dp86854 жыл бұрын
Jayden s That was called weathering. Honda did it first by taking road going car engines that had done at least 50k then rebuilt for F1. Modern day heat treating and materials, coatings eliminate the need to do this anymore. This was one of Honda unknown secrets to reliability and power for quite a while in 80s. As there was less expansion on engine parts tighter tolerances could be used to gain hp without extra friction.

They are not identical, you can see it in the video - other side is significantly longer, which seems to be because the left side of the cylinders are located farther than the rightside. Therefore it will be impossible to install them on wrong side.

What a steal for 400$. Also scary O ring for the coolant and oil passages, seems like bad design. The same thing goes for the chain rubbing, I would grind that completely.
3 жыл бұрын
O-rings still good on an old poorly maintained engine. Looks like a good design, and a not a problem. I guess that is why when taken care of, these can go over 400,000 miles.
@torquesteer26573 жыл бұрын
Same on BMWs too
@MathsatBondiBeach3 жыл бұрын
Re the timing chain eating away the internal fitting on the cover - is that purely a function of some problem with the tensione/guides or is it a design clearance issue?
