You got to know when to hold them and know when to fold em. Things do wear out even though we think we can make them last. It is obvious that this generator has done a lot of work. When it comes to commercial units, you get what you pay for. Good call on the vintage footage. Thanks Bruce. Stevo

Right I diagnosed it to the governor. I can feel it pulse and kind of crunch when i turn over the engine. When I part it out i will be careful. The problem is that it has been abused, meaning stored under a rural building in wet conditions.

Hi Bruce, I've seen on those chonda generators where the air circuit in the carburetor will make it surge like that even on some older Honda snowblowers that had heavy commercial use (the jet and passages under the plastic idle screw) and had to rod them out with wire and old fashion carb dip. Good luck
@BrucesShop11 ай бұрын
Yes sometimes I forget to do the idle jut. Then sometimes I over jet it causing black smoke.

Bruce, I had the same generator and similar issue. Double check the "sheppard hook end pointing down" of the largest governor springs and make sure the end point is not bent down far enough that it is not dragging across the yellow metal shroud causing erratic behavior.
@BrucesShop Жыл бұрын
Yes i understand that . The governor makes a grinding feeling when i turn over the engine without the plug. Thanks for helping out everything counts.

Now that was an electrifying experience just proving that blackouts on the electrical system are happening all over the world and now it appears to be happening in Alberta at Bruces Shop. Sad because Champion is one of the best for customer service in the industry.

I'll have to pull mine out again. When I set the valve lash I didn't do the best job tightening everything down intentionally like an idiot. Started right up afterwards no issues. Then decided would not. Will have to open back up, go through everything again to get in spec and get er going once the snow melts away. Of course, haven't worked on since the Predator or the Honda's are my go to. Seems at that time, I wasn't most keen on adjusting the governor and springs, so will have to look at that as well when at it. Mine definitely had valve lash issue and of course the typical carb and fuel flow. Some of the electrical can be funky like reminds me of testing parts that test good when no current running through, though a hairline not visible crack can be observed with like a light bulb or meter on when running since once warms up the break or high resistance manifests. Thanks for sharing the details. I'll try to document better when I get to in the future sometime when I have the time. My channel is more sanity check for me since I do so many things concurrently and might inspire others to do the same and support others too. Thanks again and keep us posted.

Good show Bruce. If it likes to start with the choke on when the engine is warm, I would double check the fuel system. Some kind of blockage or air leak.

My mechanic gave me his similar model. It will start but as you open choke it shuts down as if it can't handle load. Checked engine stuff like carb and valves, coil .Finally disconnected avr . Engine starts and runs fine. If you plug avr back in it immediately dies. New brushes and avr made no difference. So genset is overloading engine due to a defect or engine can't handle any load but that would be hard to test except by engine swap.update typed comment while watching. See you at governor. Maybe long shot that some how my governor system is not responding to the lowered rpm of genset and throttle is not opening to to provide enough fuel to keep it running.

I also had to disconnect the High volts shutdown connector as it was shutting the unit down when everything was OK

I've found rule 1 if it has a govenor problem, it's not the govenor. Could be a fuel problem, air leak, or someone reset those govenor springs wrong or bent a linkage.
