Hey, I'm new around here because of the video. There are two additional reasons why I think it was so popular. As a Christian, I liked the video because a lot of popular content from Christian outlets either stay away from issues like this, or are extremely politically conservative. It was refreshing to see something go viral from a dude who could pass as a Fox News anchor, but seems to favor facts and true compassion. The other thing is that I see agnostic/atheist friends who love to make fun of religion, independently sharing the video without making any comments about the name of your channel. Like it or not, if you had taken a break to talk about God in the video, that video would not have been shared by most of them. Instead, you are leading by example. People can get inspired and dig deeper into your channel and find content they want/need. Until then, you are putting content out there that is making the world a better place.

Great point, Brandon! Totally agree. Jesus did not hold a Torah Study every time He dined with sinners, tax collectors, atheists, etc. He lived the Good News He was teaching and went to the Cross to secure for all humankind. "God talk" is cheap and hollow. Leading, inspiring, explaining, giving your answer to "their" questions is powerful.

As I listen to y'all discuss why Phil's racism video has been successful, thought I'd throw in my 2 cents on why I found it useful and compelling... These come from a context of me started on an anti-racism journey, surrounded by rural Christians who are primarily concerned about respect for cops and the horrors of rioting. In trying to have courteous but constructive conversations about race, the biggest challenge I've discovered is the lack of a shared historical foundation; beyond the civil war and MLK, there is minimal knowledge or intentional thought about anything in between (and any info I offer can seem like excuses or "fake news" 🙄). 1. This video potentially fills that really important knowledge gap (even tho it's by no means exhaustive). It demonstrates that racism didn't just evaporate - it evolved. And the systems we rely on today didn't appear from thin air - they came from real, flawed people (and therefore may be inherently intertwined with racist thought/intention). It gives me something to build on. 2. Phil already had a platform, and being a recognized evangelical pastor generally makes him a more trusted source to this community. Christian kind of hit on this talking about people already knowing they like/approve of things Phil's produced, like veggie tales. 3. Although 17 minutes is somewhat long in the KZbin world, it's significantly shorter than documentaries or books. I can ask someone to watch this without them feeling overburdened . (I think we all SHOULD invest in education and activism around issues of race, but first people have to see and BELIEVE that there are real problems.) 4. Christian also talked about the vid NOT being too harsh/snarky, which is right on the nose. It doesn't have any "red flags" that trigger a sceptical audience to throw out the baby with the bathwater (like " institutional racism" or "white privilege"...) Phil SHOWED those things but didn't name them with loaded terms. This is super important and surprisingly unique; there are other creators who are minimally controversial but their content often builds on itself, requiring a bigger commitment to consume OR making any individual part prone to be easily dismissed. 5. There wasn't an excess of commentary/value judgment made about the information presented. I could send it to anyone without worrying if they'd perceive an "agenda". (Other than to care 😊, which seems pretty benign.) All this to say that I really appreciate all the content y'all are sharing. Please know that there lots of regular folks (and pastor-folk) out in the world trying to have meaningful conversations about racial justice within our communities, but that easily accessible resources from "big names" can be REALLY helpful (doodles, quotes, videos, etc.)! Thanks so much for using your voices and skills to advance God's kingdom.

And I'm not a unique case, there is an entire generation of people who have your work buried deep within their formative knowledge that even as 20-something adults, when you have something to say that's relevant, educational, and poignant, we'll stop what we're doing and listen.

I really appreciated Christian Taylor’s point about your potential impact the adults who grew up watching Veggietales. Watching viral video was a similar experience to the day I realized that Fred Rogers really was that kind. We are used to looking up to people as children and then growing up and realizing that they are not all we thought they were. For adults whose faith has grown up with us, seeing the person who was so instrumental in introducing us Biblical morality express such a nuanced take on Biblical morality is a meaningful experience, particularly in an age when nuance is so often lost.

I shared Phil's video in our Church's women's whatsapp group and was shut down by two elderly white women. This is London 2020. Some other women have commented in support but honestly I'm at a loss that there're Christians who shut down the experiences of Black people.
@isesise26584 жыл бұрын
It dont matter to them, and I could be wrong, but I think it's because of 2 things: 1. One thing I am noticing about those of us in the west, no matter our race, is people in the west seem to NEED someone to look down upon (to make themselves feel better I guess), and to hinder that ability to look down on someone makes them feel like you are taking something from them (all subconscious). Of course this observation could be off in context to your experience sharing that vid, but why would white older Christian women's (in London) immediate reaction to a vid about American issues be negative or distasteful? 2. I think it's because of a contempt for black lives - We have to be the blame for our problems to make those who hate us dismiss "guilt." And I'm not saying black ppl shouldnt take responsibility for their lives. I been through some things that I can link back to everything Phil broke down in that vid, but I grind and dont make excuses, and I have 2 businesses; both in their infancy, but both growing, so there is no victim mentality here.

When I started watching your videos, the last person I thought could give a clear view of racism would be a white man. Also even having an understanding, to be willing to articulate it clearly and without apologies of guilt, etc. probably not! You didn't hit everything (as I see), but you certainly articulated the issues beyond just the experience. Education moved from self-development to a way to get the money, a very longtime ago. So, way too many things are explained in only one dimension money/profit. Brain exercise helps express the experience without offense and with a movie-like clarity conveyed to the listener. Well done, sir. I felt that many will be able to see and be willing to make changes within their spiritual hope to become a healthier Christian, citizen and neighbor. We have the opportunity to do better with understanding.

The Disney corporation came out as supporting things that are anti to conservative Christian values, but I cannot even tell you how many Christians I know, including myself, who have gone to the theme parks, purchased their movies and toys for my children and love what they do as far as family entertainment. Do I agree with everything the Disney Corporation supports? no. But do they have some great things for families? yes. Thank you Phil Vischer for the vids on race. You are brave for telling people about how a lot of those issues came about. Unfortunately, you may have to pay a bit for doing so. Side note but maybe adding to the race issue of understanding what the other side may or may not think, I noticed that when she mentioned the word woke your two male guests and a bit yourself also seemed to cringe at the thought of you being woke to something that was happening to you. This word was generally first used around AA circles with a meaning of simply being aware of something. I am amazed at how this more or less slang term has been so politicized and dividing. Again thank you so much for the series. I will be sharing them with individuals in my small corner of existence to hopefully spread some much-needed understanding of the issues.

I know, right? That was my biggest criticism of that video--basically every thing he mentions in that video is illegal (except for the argument about the drug war affecting blacks more) and HAS BEEN for decades! Kind of a big clue when every photo in that video is black & white. There is no solution, just like there isn't a solution to people not sinning anymore, which is what Christianity needs to propagate itself, and this new religion of anti-racism is no different. Watch some of John McHorter's content. He's the one who opened my eyes to all this actually being a religion--and he's black!

Discounting the late George Floyd as a potential authoritative voice regarding the Bible "because he has a criminal past" totally ignores the recorded teachings of Jesus and the record of sinners who became transformed by the Holy Spirit, etc. Nice discussion about story telling, choice of topics, allusion to adult attention spans and learning styles, engaging people long enough (vis a vis Twitter) to allow attitude changes. Two bank robbers with AK-47s and head to toe body armor fought against cops with pistols and shotguns, the cops couldn’t touch them until they got rifles from a local gun store. That’s why you say in your video it started in 1997. If I ever get into a shootout in my career I do not want to face a situation like the 1997 North Hollywood shootout without a rifle or the training I’ve received. He's the editor and monitors the video and audio as they're recording, so he's mostly focused in on that, though from time to time, he'll jump in =) At the end of each episode, Phil credits Jason as the editor. He's also involved in Skye's podcast, The Movie Proposal, where they review movies and Jason chimes in more on that podcast, especially at the end where they do the segment "Something Blew." And on Christian's podcast for her film The Girl Who Wore Freedom, Jason is a co-host with Christian and Josh Lindsey.

52:00 - What?! The label "racist" or "racism" has _extremely_ negative connotations, and it's perhaps one of the worst moral condemnations you can lay on a person aside from r*pe and murder.
@zabumatthew4 жыл бұрын
The problem they’re getting at is that the people who get offended by being told that they are enabling racism have a less complete understanding of what the word means. You don’t have to hate other people to benefit or contribute to racism. As a teacher, if I stand by idly as my school maintains policies that effectively prevent the hiring of people of color and disproportionately disciplines students of color while putting them in low track classes, I am contributing to racism. Am I evil? I hope not. Am I contributing to racism? Yes.
@gben824 жыл бұрын
@@zabumatthew ..ya well I think we can almost say with certainty, and your comment kinda of shows this, that the word itself is losing its moral "punch". I'm reading that "White Fragility" book now, and the general message I keep hearing everywhere is basically "Just accept it--you're a racist or contributing to racism" or "Racism is just a part of who you are" kinda like original sin.

"Be The Bridge" is a good, Christian equivalent to "Black Lives Matter" if you are uncomfortable with "supporting" that group.

Geto Daco Nothing Christian about it....fixed. I think the issue is that people are simply afraid to say black lives matter because they feel like it magically donates to the organization. It doesn’t....you can say the words.....It’ll be ok.

If it makes Phil feel better, I'm sure even Mr. Rogers had things he wished he could improve on. God gives everyone gifts but we're also imperfect and have our struggles. We all make up parts of the body of Christ. Feet can't always do what elbows can but the opposite is true too and that's what's so great about diversity. It's better to try to be more Christ-like than Mr Rogers-like. Be humbled that being perfect is impossible but Jesus' death made you perfect and you can use your unique gifts to spread God's love in the world. Just remember: God made you special and he loves you very much :)

I thought he had some good info. Would have improved it with sources. He gave some years for the mid 20th century issues but no administrations. The GI Bill formed under Roosevelt and signed by Truman (even though Truman was probably the most pro-African American Democrat ever - but given the running that was no difficult task). I understand it’s a topic that takes more than a 5 minute monologue to address. But it would have helped if he’d mentioned the major players in office on both sides. And I would have preferred be included Trumps policy that has undone many if the criminal issues that were mentioned. But I think he avoided Trump so as to not undo all he had said since Trump is THE trigger word for all those left of center and sadly some right of center. I am curious to read more about what Trump just signed regarding police reform. I hadn’t realized how Clinton militarized then under his administration. Something I believe should have been challenged in constitutional grounds. Bottom line is we didn’t get here over night or even over 250 years. We go here over a little over 6000 years of sinful mankind. Injustice happens because men love the darkness more than they love the light. And know amount of money or legislating or counseling will ever change that. Because it was all settled a little over 2000 years ago when God told the world which lives mattered. For God so loved the WORLD that He gave is only begotten Son so that WHOEVER believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.

We all need to examine how we see the Bible. Trump is far from the first person to use it as a prop. Unfortunately Skye has once again criticized Trump, but fails to mention his own shortcomings or anyone else’s. Not that his criticism is wrong, I think Skye is right. However the fact that he rarely gives the same scrutiny to anyone else is my biggest frustration of an otherwise great video.

I always appreciate your perspectives. Yes, you're snarky but whatever. First of all, I think you're doing a great job of speaking to really difficult issues in a thoughtful way and this minefield is pretty fraught with toe-stepping. My bigger issue with your podcasts (not this one in particular) is that it feels too often like you straw man believers and fellow Americans that don't see things the way you do. That you can't see some differing perspectives in your own mind well enough to consider other motivations than assuming pretty poor (and sometimes bad) motivations. Having grown up in the bible belt and gone to a variety of denominations it feels too often like you have conceptions of Christians that I've rarely met as being the majority. It's a pretty regular feeling listening do you. I appreciate your podcasts and thoughts regardless. This is a difficult time, thanks for doing your part to be Jesus today.

I watched your videos on race. You strike me as a wealthy white liberal whose family has not been effected by violent crime. Unfortunately my family understands that prisons are built because criminals kill people and damage families. Some people need to be put away because they hurt other people.

Some people strike me as persons who are either sincerely ignorant or displaying conscientious stupidity. There is a root cause of the violence/crime that doesn't even address the so called "justice system" that is disgraceful. Why is there so much criminality in Russia even with a dictator?

@ahayahlove374 жыл бұрын
Mr. Vischer I wanted to leave a comment about your Race in America video but it was disabled. You started by asking why were people angry, did you mean the so-called Blacks in America our people in general? I can tell you a few of my beliefs as to why the so-call Blacks in America are angry, 1. There is no such thing as Black or African American people, they do NOT exist to Ahayah which is why they are being treated like their LIVES DON'T MATTER!. 2. We are the people who are suffering from the curses our forefather Moses told us about in Deuteronomy 28 and YOU are of the people Christ told us about in Revelation 2:9 and 3:9. 3. The other races have kept from us who we really are as a people for over 400 years because they knew the power that would be restored to us once we are awakened and turn back to our God. The change is going to come because it has been prophecized that it will but until it does the true Children of Israel who are the salt of the earth; the light of this world; the apple of The Most High Gods eyes are going to be Hell a Mad and will soon roar like lions like they did when the walls of Jericho crumbled, their roar would be so loud everyone will shake in their army boots because that's the kind of God we will serve, he will make every knee bow down to worship us by putting his knee on the necks of all who hate us and have treated us as our lives DON'T MATTER by putting their knees on our neck and worst causing us to suffer and die as soon as we realize who we are as a people because right now, he doesn't know any people who are classified as Black, African American, or any of the bywords we have been called over the years. Also, the two babies you had in your video at the end looked like twins, Ha

Gabe, I agree with your suggestion of diversifying the speakers...but with an important caveat. Phil seems to understand that his audience is largely white (note his use of "us" and "we" in his now famous video on race). In my personal experience, white people tend to be willing to listen when only when it's other white people talking--this is especially true when it comes to race. On matters of race, I tend to encounter more defensiveness or outright hostility from my white colleagues and friends. I think dismantling white supremacy is a white person's project; white people workshopping with other white people seems, in my opinion, a good starting point. Perhaps if this series continues, Phil will consider bringing in more non-white voices--but this shouldn't happen before the proper groundwork is laid (e.g. learning how to listen, learning how to think about race differently, learning to take BIPOC stories with greater authority, learning how to see one's own racial bias, etc.). Otherwise, you're just asking a black person to invite hostility from an audience who isn't yet ready to hear what they have to say.
@efrainperezjr4024 жыл бұрын
@@AnActualWolf Larry Elder is a prominent black conservative who would challenge Phil and his audience, but not in the way you are imagining. He'd generally say that systematic racism either doesn't exist or at least doesn't account for the majority of the black community's current issues. Phil Vischer and crew (and presumably his audience) are generally sympathetic to the ideas of systematic racism, white privilege, unconscious bias, etc. Larry would suggest they are barking up the wrong tree when trying to understand the plight of black Americans. He'd bring up everything Phil skipped in his viral video (the deleterious effects of Lyndon Johnson's welfare programs, illegitimacy rates in black community and the breakdown of the nuclear family, etc).
