In an Only War campaign I ran for some friends of mine, they were part of an armored regiment from a border world and had reached a level of industrialization equal to our own. While the world couldn't afford to produce expensive and not-very versatile (technically speaking) Leman Russ, they had instead settled on creating Chimeras sporting lascannons as their main battle tank. Needless to say that they did well in their various running battle against the Speed Freaks ork tribes roaming the sub-sector.

So in other words, the Chimera is the Sherman of the 40k universe. There are AA Shermans, Armored Recovery Shermans, the T34 Calliope rocket tank, Sherman APC's, etc.

For comparison to the modern USA M1A2 Abrams: Dimension: Chimera/Abrams Height: 3.7m/2.44m Length: 6.9m/7.93m Width: 5.7m/3.66m Weight (approx): 38t/65t Engine Power: 1,800hp/1,500hp Top speed paved: 70kmph/67kph Top speed offroad: 55kmph/40kph The Chimera is a much wider and taller design. It would likely have difficulty turning due to its excessively wide track. Power output and speed are very close, but the Chimera weighs roughly half as much. Perhaps it has its speed governed like the Abrams to prevent it from ripping itself apart. I will assume that the rated weight of the Chimera is the empty weight without additional armor or ammunition.

It also has multiple access points, including a rear ramp, two side hatches and a roof hatch that allows the occupants to open and egress or to fire out of. The Chimera is also about as common as dirt (like M113s) while the Rhino in the 41st millennium is nearly a holy sacred relic. The Chimera is much more like the M113 because of that.

That explains a lot. Like the fact that that it is considered a holy relic explained why the Guards don't get the use them. Because that's so precious and valuable only Emperor's most loyal, brightest, and overall best. And not any random Joe Schmoe has been given Lasgun (the chaos Rhinos were mostly ones they had given to them before Horus Heresy) and a lot of people tend to forget about it being amphibious because nobody uses water terrain in the tabletop game and if they do you do it is too shallow or the body is too small to make much difference and I'm pretty sure rarely comes up in the other material (sadly, I'm pretty sure in dawn of war 1. Relic forgot about amphibious part despite there being some map that could have a made use of it.)

That's irrelevant, because what matters is the design and how it's used, not how much it weighs. Also, GamesWorkshop generally doesn't know anything about armored vehicles or aircraft. For instance the Rhino is only slightly (and I do mean slightly) longer than a Chimera but also almost 2 meters shorter in width yet is SOMEHOW able to manage having 10 kitted Space Marines inside of it whereas only 12 men fit in the larger Chimera. This doesn't even touch the fact that the Chimera is supposedly 38 tonnes *_with tracks smaller in width than even the M113._* So... By that measure, the Chimera is more likely to sink itself in the dirt (it wouldn't) than an M113 weighing that much. 2.) No, it wouldn't. The Israelis and other nations have added neigh ridiculous amounts of uparmoring and turrets (which have to be filled with ammunition) to the already-increasing-weight of the M113 series which ended, technically, with the M113A3 at 27,000 pounds. Believe me, we've exceeded that weight limit and then some. There's nothing stopping you from altering the suspension to take 38 tonnes of weight. After all, the BFV ballooned in weight from the 21t of the vehicle's prototype to well over 30t with all the upgrades (like BUSK system components, all that armor and reactor armor and turret cupola and guns and ammo and comms systems adds weight). Each variant is progressively heavier than the last and it does it in a size not that much bigger than an M113. Going by just stats, if for SOME REASON you just considered weight and size as the only comparable points, the BFV series is actually more alike the Chimera than the M113. Of course, anyone would find that notion to be absurd considering that the role and design of the vehicles is entirely different. The Bradley is an IFV (especially now). The M3 Bradley is designed to only carrier TWO passengers because the role of an armored fighting vehicle is more necessary than it being able to ferry troops. The Chimera is relatively small, it's common as dirt, highly modular/customizable, has more variants than stars, is amphibious and is widely used. It's a damn 41st millennia M113. Yes, the M113 and Chimera are different in stats, but not their role and function in the Imperium.

I actually foresee a lore problem with the described unit/offensive you've just described. (Albeit I approve it's use for making a simplified video.) What you've described is a "combined" "arms" force with several roles all bundled into one. I can imagine an inquisitor somewhere arranging a rather unfortunate... "accident" with one of the artillery loading chimeras.

Keep in mind much of those combined arms forces are comprised of different regiments from the same world working together. You may have mechanized infantry from the 12th, armed tanks from the 36th, artillery support fire from 1137th, and a smattering of target acquisition and recon from the 63rd all under a temporary command structure but it's all still Steel Legion.

the guard in at least the modern codex uses combined arms all the time, the lore states indevidual regiments may not have completee combined arms so that a chaos rebelion has to be much bigger to be a serious threat, (instead of 1 regiment you need 2 or 3 just to function) for example a tank regiment often has small amounts of mobile artillery, infantry often have small amounts of artillery (and artillery oftne have small amounts of infantry), seige regiments have both artillery and infantry and a very small amount of tanks, mech regiments often have small numbers of tanks. plus they tipically par 2-3 diferent types of regiment together to get combined arms. its actually very similar to ww2 soviets at some points (where they have pure tank regiments supporting pure infantry regiments supported by pure tank regiments and all are independant.

they don't have suspension but maybe they have other ways of keeping the crew comfortable enough, as for speed , it sis possible without suspension and the crew would be fine its the compenents like gun controls and engine that would suffer in a real suspensionless tank at that speed, guard stuff is tough so i gues they solved that issue, so the crew would be uncomfortable but no other negative side effects but it becomes way cheaper to build and operate. you probably find the crews and men they transport get used ot it anyway.

hay in lore a lasgun will blow your arm off, which means a head shot should always do the job, if you translated the lore to realife each shot is the equivilent of about 35grams of TnT directed in 1 direction (the target) which is lik strapping a large handgrenade on the target and seting it off.

Fiaura the tank Girl did a great job about the stats of Imperial army equipment, I know. And the laz espacially in higher setting is quite an impressive weapon issued to your standard infanterymen. agree. At least IF you hit something where it's has the desired effect. And since it is not a kinetic weapon it only works by heat. So hitting a Nid or an armoured enemy will not have the said devastating effect laz have on flesh. In that case I would rather have a good ol kinetic weapon.

It's an amazing bit of kit in the lore...in the table top game i often had trouble justifying the expense unless we played on a really large map (like our backyard). The standard map where your maybe 24-48 inches from the enemy Imperial tanks blow up way to easily. Their front facing armor might be decent, but the side and rear were so bad most weapons can blow them up. Pretty much anything with a AP strength 4 or higher could take them out and then your out hundreds of points with of machines.

Which gives them far too many chance to destroy your high point troops before you get off a shot imo. Though the destroyed tank hull can make good cover at least... Longer range maps though they are awesome for the most part. Though a heavy weapons team in some troops tends to get about as much effect for far less points.

+Dicerson+ I associate Bolt weapons more in line with cannon calibre (ie contemporary autocannon) pistols, assault rifles and machine guns but with unique propulsion mechanism and payload. Grenades are meant to be detonated in proximity to enemies and shred them with fragments (Though specialized Metal Storm shells do this) whilst Mass Reactive Shells punch through armor/cover to deliver an HE filler that burrows inside of a target then detonates.

That is the correct assessment, but I suppose it's weird. Bolts are very odd. They are effective miniature HEAP rounds, but with self-propulsion that allows them to accelerate, maintain, or slow their deceleration (depending on the environment) into their targets. They punch through a little, then explode. Against hard targets they just flat explode on hit, so they aren't very good against heavy armor. What standard bolts excel at is all forms of infantry. Bolts punch into anything with less armor than a light AFV (IE, a rhino) and then explode, even against targets that they would normally overpenetrate, they are designed such that they explode very shortly after contact. Armored infantry are their best matchup, as they can usually punch through the armor then detonate on the inside of the target, with the explosion being partially contained by the target's own armor, turning their insides into a blender. So basically you are correct, they are closer to mass reactive shells. But I think their closest analogue is the HEAP round in common use on most main battle tanks, but with the addition of self-propulsion.

i hate to nitpick but the chimera doesnt have 8 degrees of gun depression, the gun would need a hole in the top of the turret to get more than 3 degrees with any kind of weapon mounted on the turret

Yes the first comment, Omnissiah be praised. But i prefer putting 40 guardsmen in a Stormlord and destroying anything in-front with 60” heavy 20 str 6 ap -2 damage 2 to melt any infantry, four lascannon sponsons plus 25 guardsmen firing with vostroyan guardsmen with 30” range flashlights.

Do the death korp or any other differing guard regiment have a different design for this vehicle? I know the death korp use the malcador still, but are there any other chimaera variants that are used besides the Mars pattern?

Roberto The Fifth the chimera is a very ubiquitous design where the patterns are almost indistinguishable save for slight differences in some turret slopes and weapon loadouts with the only notable examples being the AC and twin Heavy Bolter variants being from Gryphonne IV. Death Korps does not use the Chimera as far as I know due to the nature of their combat doctrine. Assaults are usually performed on foot with heavy ground armor support while still flinging artillery. If an APC is used because enemy fire is too intensive even for Kriegers it will usually be very heavy vehicles like the Gorgon that can withstand extreme weapons fire for the short duration they need to push an assault. The range and speed of the Chimera is moot for Krieg siege doctrine and when they do need APC's in their shitfests the Chimera wouldn't hold up.

actually exnihilo adnihilum, there are krieg tank and mechanised regiments, with mecchaninsed regiments and some other kreig regiments use storm chimeras (up-armored chirmas with autocannons instead of multi-las) which gives them squad mobility that is still suited for siege warfare. but yes generally speaking they do generally prefure centaurs (for speed) and gorgons (for size). as far as i am aware only deathkorps grenadeirs use storm chimeras in assaults.

Matthew Burger I've only ever seen Grenadiers using centaurs but I could be wrong. I was referring to their general doctrine, they would have access to them but they are rarely deployed the same way most armored fist units are and are generally tasked for very specific engagements.
