Very interesting lifts, nice original fixtures in here. Very detailed and interesting video! Love the multi-camera shots, very well done! Any plans to film the lifts after their next mod?

Thanks! I do like these lifts, and it's a shame they're being modded. Luckily there may be an opportunity for parts. If you want to see what the lifts will look like after the mod, keep an eye on my other channel, JMRT Lifts. I'll post a video on there for you once they've put the lifts back into service after modernisation. Thanks for watching!

Any ideas what the original express buttons looked like? Those original indicators are the same a designed they used a lot in New Zealand, that were often used alongside matching square buttons (often not seen in the UK).....I wonder if those were fitted here?
@MichalM3 жыл бұрын
You raise a really interesting point, and honestly, I have no idea. You may be able to tell that the button panel used to be to the right of the doors, which is where the speaker is now. Does this narrow it down at all? I think I know which square buttons you're referring to: are they the ones in mrmattandmrchay's firemans switch experiment take 2 video? They have a small red LED above the number. I shall take a look on the internet for some photos of the original lifts. Thanks for watching!
@the_alex_ellis_channel69233 жыл бұрын
@@MichalM That is is a later variant of the same button that was used in the 1980s. I am referring to the original lantern version. It is a essentially a square version of the one mrmatt featured in his "Express lifts button" video where he pulls them apart. Bother the oval and square versions were use din NZ, but the Square one is much more common (or at least it is among surviving examples) - see example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/o2nIh5VtgLSEeZo

@@the_alex_ellis_channel6923 Oh that's quite cool, I've seen those before in videos, but never in real life. To be honest you don't get many of those over here - but this could be a rare case where they have those buttons. This would make sense because the external arrows are just white (this is apparently quite rare), instead of red for one arrow and white for the other arrow. Will take a look soon.

@@the_alex_ellis_channel6923 Do you know from what years each fixtures were generally used to and from? I’m thinking maybe vandal resistant type with these, but would they use LED buttons in 1980? My second guess would be the classic original type, and maybe some of the last ones to use them.
@the_alex_ellis_channel69233 жыл бұрын
@@Lift.Tracker I can't really say, as Express used some different fixtures in New Zealand to the UK. We never got the vandal resistant ones. They used the classic oval "1st generation" buttons over here until the 1970s, with the very last ones even being a light-up version! Then they switch to using the white buttons with lanterns behind, which they made in both Oval and Square, with the latter being most common. In the 1980s, they introduced an LED variant of the square buttons, with a small red LED at the top. They also introduced a totally different oval-shaped LED set of fixtures that were only used in the Asia-Pacific market. Express's New Zealand division was taken over by Schindler sometime in the late 80s or Early 90s, and is what has allowed Schindler to remain the most popular lift company in New Zealand ever since. Express was MASSIVE in New Zealand, especially in the 60s and 70s, when they were competing directly with OTIS, and may have even made it to No. 1 lift company at some point.

I'm making a video today about why we should stop incorrectly using the word generic. Generic just means something standard, common, with nothing really that special about it.

Agreed. I don't understand why there's a problem with using the manufacturers name to describe a lift.
