Mike I store my post hole under my tractor shed with it tied upright against the wall. When i need it i pick it up with the loader and take it to my shop and suspend it with my chain hoist. I turn the tractor around and use the chain hoist and trolley to support and move the post hole digger around while hooking it up. I take the post hole digger off in the reverse order. I am 65, and this is the easiest way I have found to do this job safely by myself. I enjoy all your videos. This is the first comment I have entered. I am in Georgia, and have a hobby farm, which is mostly wooded like yours. Keep up the good work.

I built a stand (on casters) that holds the auger at the exact position I need it in to back up to it and hook it right up, plus I can move it around the barn wherever i want to. That said, I think a hydraulic auger is the way to go. No PTO shaft, you can mount it on the front, and it is reversible. Much, much nicer.

Funny, we put our post hole digger on yesterday as well. We keep ours hanging in a similar way you lifted yours when we store it. Simply back up, hook up, lower the hanging strap, and go. Just as easy to take off in reverse.

Mike, you can build a 2x4 stand on casters for the auger attachment with the front height being at roughly 1/2 height of your 3 point lift height. the front catch can be the 2 pins on the inside of the lift arms on your auger. The back of the stand should have a removable mid bar that can be inserted below the arch of the back boom at that mid height (preferably with a cut notch) , once you back into it. It can now be lowered into the stand like a reverse quick hitch. If my instructions are unclear or you want me draw you a set of plans, just let me know.

I just built a stand out back 2 4x4 post 8ft long 2x8 to make a H stand and a length of chain and hang it from and I can pivot it into place. Works for me. They are a bear to put on when I first bought mine used from neighbor it was just laying on the floor of his barn what a circus! If I had more garage room like earlier post said extra chain hoist from rafters sounds really good ok keep up the great videos!

Mike the easiest way to hook up your post hole digger is to take the auger off first , then hook it up. storing with the auger off you can basically back right up to it and hook up. I found this to be the easiest way yet without cursing and throwing wrenches. Have a wonderful day.

Mike, I founds this a prescient video. Just recently I was able to find a stand sold by Rural king to support my 3 point auger. Because I live in California, I had to ship the stand to my companies office in Minnesota, then have that office forward it to me in California.( rural king on line would not ship to Ca.) at the moment I have my auger stored in ground in a concrete hole that I dug and fitted with an inner and outer sono tube. The inner tube diameter lets me de drop the auger into the ground- the delta between the inner and outer tube was filled with cement to give me an in-ground casing.the hole was dug 4 ‘ deep then back filled with a foot of stone so the auger sits above the water level. It is still a pain to mount single handled- so I’m hopping the new stand will make storage easier.

Hey Mike, what i did with my PHD was I found 2 trees that look like a Y then used the PHD to dig to the correct depth to get to right hieght for my 3pt, put 1 Y tree in each hole the used another strong branch going across to support the 3pt by the gear box. now when i unhook the PHD from teh tractor i remove the one strong branch that goes between the the Y trees/posts , backup the tractor, put teh strong branch back in the Y's and lower down the 3pt so the phd by the gar box is resting on the branch, and unhook.

Mike, you almost have the solution, a tractor for each implement. Most post hole diggers I've seen have a lifting loop at the balance point. Sling them from a beam in the shed or barn with a cheap come-along. A friend using one for the first time screwed it all the way in the ground , front wheel came off the ground as PTO's don't have reverse we had to dig it out with shovels.

Good job Mike. I liked your cheat method! I & I am sure many others out there with tractor attachments going on their 3 point hitches have dealt with most the issues you are dealing with here. Sometimes I get lucky & they go right on the 1st try, other times I'm swearing at it! My thinking on this implement is to put it on a pallet, perhaps a larger than normal pallet. Build a jig from some scrap 2 x 4's to hold it in place while you are backing up to it to align the hitch arm pivots. You gain a couple things doing this because it keeps the implement off the ground while not in use & might possibly make it easier to get it mounted without to much fussing around & thirdly, now you can get under it with your forks to move it around the yard or shed... Bill... :~)

There’s gotta b a crib/cradle you could design up out of 2x4’s that it could set in allowing you to back right up to it. I actually always hook up the non adjustable bottom link first as thereafter you can adjust the other bottom link on as need be without having to readjust height on tractor. Lastly, I have found if I leave the PTO off until last, it allows for more movement, for the better, to align the bottom links. Good luck finding a better way Mike! Hooking up ANYTHING on the back end of a tractor is always an adventure you gotta make peace with lol. All the best to you and yours!

This what my Dad and I did in the 60's, 70's & 80's. Where we were going to store the post hole auger, we would just did a hole hole in the ground (with the post hole auger) clean it out what we could then leave it in the ground that way you can back up to it and you will have a little "Wiggle" room for hooking it up. Yes, the auger was in the ground all the time but ours never rusted to where it made it unusable. We used out often, we had somewhere around 385 acres in central Missouri. We had MILES and miles of fences for cattle, hogs, sheep and horses. Or, if you do not want to burry it in the ground you might put two posts about 4' tall in the ground very close to each other and tie the auger to it, that way it will not tip over and you will still have some "Wiggle" room. Just a couple of ideas. Best of luck and I love your videos.

I never found it to be that difficult. The brush hog was my nemesis! 😊 We rarely stored ours with the auger attached, but even if it was the pivot points would allow the whole thing to be stretched out and lie flat on the ground. The arch doesn't weigh much, so pick it up and connect to the lower links. The boom then pivots off of the lower links while you line up up the top link pin. The power head gets drug towards the tractor along the ground, but also helps keep it in place. After the pins are in, raise the lift and connect the PTO shaft. I remember it being easy. Am I forgetting something? Also get that draw bar out of the way! 😊
@vinsonhelton71413 жыл бұрын
where you put the strap, my digger has a loop welded at the top where the boom bends. i built a door frame shaped holder in my shed. one side is anchored to the end of my work bench. i just back through the door frame shaped opening which has a hook at the top. hook it to the loop or eyelet and it hangs.

I store my post hole digger in the back of the shed where I park my tractor. I hung a chain hoist from a ceiling joist and built a stand for the auger to sit in. I attach the chain hoist to the boom of the digger and I can raise and lower the boom with one hand using the hoist until it is aligned to connect to the tractor this makes it easy as pie to hook the digger to the tractor. I also used large washers to make shims for each side of the boom where it connects to the back of the tractor. I welded 2 washers together and then welded a small diameter 3" bolt to the edge of the washers. I made one for each side of the boom. The bolt is a handle that lets me keep my fingers in the clear when installing the shims. the shims take a lot of the side to side movement out of the boom; When I have the boom in the right position I slide the washers in between the boom and the hole the pin that holds the boom to the tractor slides through then slide the pin in..

First thing do is take off the PTO shaft and auger. Makes it easier to mover around. Put the lower links about 2 inches off the ground. Hook up the lower links then the top link. Do a guess-da-ment on the height of the auger. Lower the 3 point till its close. Hook up the auger then the PTO shaft. Remember when digging you should do low RPM and shallow cuts. Also when digging you will have to slowly move the tractor forward or your hole will not be straight.

Mike , Why on earth didn't you dig the 4 holes for your stand with the trackhoe??? I have a Kubota KX41-III . It has dug holes for all the wood and steel framed buildings that we built when I was contracting.. We preferred concrete piers made with sono tubes and poured level just above finish grade., You can just dump some dry sacrete in the holes and set a muffin block in each one, for your stand. 6x6's seam a bit of overkill, but it is your project. Looking forward to seeing it progress. Loren

Dan, When we were building wood and steel buildings we used sono tubes to form concrete pires which were 4' deep and esteneed up to finish grade. They had apropriate fasteners for 6x6" posts or anchor bolts for steel fram buildings in the top of them. I mikes situeaion he could pour a sona tube full of concreteup to grade, or dump some dry sacrete in the bottom of the hole and then set 2 4x8x16 concrete blocks side by side in the hole, or a precast concrete block made specifically for the purpose called a "muffin block" and bury the bottom end of the post. Mike take one of your rounds and hollow out the center to hold the bit. Once in the hole the bit will keep the rest of it upright and you would be able to lift the 3 point to you tractor. Once hooked up you would be able to lift the bit out of the tree round with the hole and you are hitched up with your post hole digger. the only thing you would need their stand for would be to put the three point on the ground for storage and not the bit.

I have seen where some people with 3pt post hole diggers auger two posts into the ground a couple feet apart, then put a easily removable board across the top of them at the level to where the bottom pins are where they need to be to back into them. The top post would be about where you put your strap to lift it from. To use it you would remove the top board, back the tractor and post hole digger in between the two upright posts. Raise the digger to a higher level, put the top board/post in place, then lower the digger onto the top post, and unhook from the tractor. Should keep everything off the ground, except maybe the tip of the bit.

Don't forget to take your draw bar off and hook up your pto shaft cover safety chain. I just run mine around the link arm on the left side (since pto rotates clockwise to the right) and clip the chain back onto itself.👍

Hi Mike, got a video request , purchased a 6ft brush hog a couple days ago, the tractor I want to use it on has been gone a couple months having a front end loader installed. Question is , will it fit my compact tractor a Mccormick jh50h , about the size of your rk37 , spread of the rear lift are my concern. Thanks , Bobby Pearceen
