another thing to note is that the sata spec in this machine is only SATA 1.5gbps - if u really want the best performance of a real SataII spec SSD inside this machine (i dont think they work with sataIII spec drives?) is to get a proper SATAII card that connects to PCI-X slot such as this: www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816124026&cm_re=syba_SATA_pci-x-_-16-124-026-_-Product which supports Sata 3gbps speed as well as Mac OSX .. and lets u connect up to 4 sata devices... whether u want to do RAID or not.. your device will be capped at 1.5gbps unless u get this card which boots the sata thruput by double. this upgrade in combination with a decent AGP card (www.jcsenterprises.com/Japamacs_Page/Blog/4B4B7BA2-7ABB-47F1-87AC-B03D37942BEE.html) will make a huge difference on the usability of this machine!!!! also because the sata card has 4 ports u can easily get a esata bracket and install an external sata port to connect esata drives.. rock n roll

Just throwing in a SATA 1-compatible SSD would have made everything so much easier. You could also get a SATA optical drive to work in the drive bay with a molex to SATA power adapter and that longer data cable. I speak from experience on that front. Actually performed that little upgrade on a G5 tower at one time, along with installing a SATA PCIe card (this was the quad model) for more and faster hard drives, although it can be tricky getting one of those that will be bootable in that system.

The reason why the SSD is slow is because it is on IDE. Not sure what type of IDE it's using but they go from 33mb/s to 133mb/s, while the SATA II goes up to 2gb/s. Installing the OSX on a SATAII SSD would more than likely give it a significant boost in speed.

The problem with trying to use that SSD is simply...firstly your SSD is using an ATA to SATA converter...but the biggest issue is the ATA33 channel used for the optical drive...the last version of G4 (FW800) used three seperate ATA interfaces...Primary is ATA100...ATA66 for Secondary drives...and ATA33 for Optical chain...OS X uses a swap file very heavily exacerbating your issues...

This video pretty much sums up the PowerMac G5: Fancy case, looks promising, and then you have to do an inordinate amount of hand-holding just to get it set up. If you make it that far, you'll be too exhausted to deal with the locating of software, the installation of Flash player, and the futile battle with OSX's mouse acceleration. It just has an endless barrage of problems to throw at you. Its sleek case seduces everyone within 100 feet of it, yet it's almost impossible to get rid of one after going through the effort of finding it. The PowerMac G5 is the perfect representation of something that always works much more poorly than you ever remembered it and never ceases to disappoint. 33:32 sums it up perfectly: "If you want to go to a PowerMac G5, just don't, because it's not going to work very well and you're going to spend a lot of hours pulling your hair out.." Also, Lol at 29:58. It's moments like those that give this channel that extra touch.
@TimurTripp28 жыл бұрын
I don't get your hate for the G5. Yes it's old, Mac OS X Leopard is pretty dated, they are not known for reliability like the 2006 Mac Pros are, but the dual and Quad G5s are still damn fine machines when they work. There is a lot of older PPC Mac OS X software they can run well, and a Linux installation is also possible if you're desperate to keep current.
@Browningate8 жыл бұрын
Timur Tripp Did you even watch the video? I don't "hate" this computer, I just feel like people need to snap out of this trance of making excuses for it. Even if you had the most powerful model, that doesn't eliminate the hand-holding or obnoxious mouse acceleration in OSX. Linux distributions have extremely limited hardware support for these as well and it's a far-cry-crapshoot if anyone's G5 will work with it.
@TimurTripp28 жыл бұрын
Whatever you mean by the "obnoxious mouse acceleration" in OS X, I use Macs almost exclusively and this does not bother me. Now if you were to say the G5 is a machine best suited for hobbyists and not the average user, I would completely agree the average user is better off with something newer like a 2008/2009 Mac Pro.
@Browningate8 жыл бұрын
Timur Tripp I don't know how some people are so ignorant to the OSX mouse acceleration problem. I guess you have to see it in action, so here's how: time yourself performing a precision mousing operation (clicking seven buttons very close to one another for example) in OSX, then try it in the same application on Windows and compare the numbers. OSX reduces your mousing productivity by a staggering degree. As for the average using being "better off with...a 2008 Mac Pro", I would disagree because those machines are way overpriced. You can get a laptop with vastly superior performance to the G5 and better connectivity, portability, and battery life for $150 easily. If you don't need portability or battery life, a normal desktop with comparable (or even superior specifications) to the aforementioned $150 laptop can be had for even less.
@TimurTripp28 жыл бұрын
***** Would comparing OS X to Linux suffice? I do plan to install a Linux distro on my Power Mac G5 Quad. But honestly, if that was such a problem, MacOS would not be a preferred platform for creative professionals. For an average user to be looking at a Power Mac G5 they must have some preference toward or are planning to switch to MacOS. I would not recommend a $150 cheap Windows laptop to them, that's for sure. The 2008/2009 Mac Pro is past its prime but still has decent-enough performance for modern tasks, MacOS El Capitan support, expandability/room to upgrade, and the excellent Mac build quality/design which is a decent improvement on the G5's.

The CD performs a hardware check on all of your components and if your fans are running on full speed the CD performs a thermal calibration and readjusts your fan speed. This CD will keep your PowerMac running for years to come. The Disk is called ASD 2.5.8 and is sold on Ebay

Dear Druaga1, I have a very important and relevant fix! I've just installed an SSD Samsung 850 evo 250 GB and it works perfectly without an adapter. I just used the B-slot. How to do it? General: G5 has two slots, your main drive (mostly in the A-slot) and a B-slot. 1. Plug the SSD into the B-slot while your main drive is still connected in the A-slot 2. Turn on your G5. Your SSD (even Sata-3) should be visible but needs to be formatted 3. Open disk utility and format the SSD to Mac OS journaled extended 4. Now, make your SSD a bootable clone of your main drive (e.g. by using SuperDuper) 5. Once cloning is finished, turn off your G5 6. leave your main drive in the A-slot... SSD must remain in B-slot 7. Turn on G5 again and hold the option/alt-Key 8. Choose your SSD as the boot disk 9. your G5 is now running with the SSD as the main drive. And your former main drive is now "just" another HDD you can use. Obviously, you can now format the former main drive HDD in the A-slot and use it as a time machine backup drive. Hope this is understandable and helps your viewers.

An SSD in a Power Mac G5, in theory, actually seems like a good idea. You could use an 80-40GB SATA II SSD to install leopard (or Snow Leopard+ on a Mac Pro) and have a second 250-500GB HDD for files.
