A few months ago we made this video… • Interesting - Explodin... and afterwards we got a ton of comments on things we should have done differently. So we revisited the exploding skateboard wheel in slow motion and found out some pretty interesting things when shooting with a waterjet. These would be some pretty funny fails and skateboard fails if the wheels did this while people were riding them. Let us know if you think we should revisit any of our other concepts.
We do more than waterjet cutting! Do you have an interesting video idea?! Let us know in the comments.

Well, you guys might have just saved a life. I was planning on setting the skateboard land speed record in the spring breaking 300 miles per hour. Can you imagine the outcome had I not known that they wheels would explode at 288 mph?? Scratch that off my goals list. I'll be sticking to around 250 mph like normal from this point on.

Use some double strength steel strapping on the outer rims of the wheels to try and force it to stay on the truck axle and hopefully get a successful cut on the centre of the wheel. You'd possible have you use some thick wheels for that experiement.

Could you do this with a bearing, like a big one
@albertlagerman
@albertlagerman 6 жыл бұрын
that would be cool, but I'm not sure it would be super easy to get the bearing started because at least with my experience, when greased up, bigger bearings tend to have more friction. I just got some fresh ~2" OD bearings and they don't spin the same way skateboard bearings do. Maybe just flush out the grease with acetone first.
@kylefutet
@kylefutet 6 жыл бұрын
albertlagerman I know that they don’t spin easily, but considering what the waterjet did to the skateboard tires I’m sure it can overpower the friction, if not then you can always clean out the grease

I noticed that wheels could handle even more speed, it's just that when wheel is expanding then jet stream just cuts trough it. To make it fair test, water jet should be moved as the wheel is expanding, not letting water stream cut trough it

400mph (640km/h, 180m/s) is the speed at which the surface of a 5cm (2") diameter wheel moves at when its spinning at: pi*0.05m = 0.16m circumference 180m/s / 0.16m = 1'100/s (rotations per second, as one rotation = one circumference) 1'100/s * 60s/min = 68'000/min = 68'000 rpm not much.... get some compressed air and u will get that fast with a few magnets.

Oh come on it's so easy to convert those metric units and you're still doing it wrong at 4:38 ... 464324776 mm/h = 464324.776 m/h = 464.324776 km/h

Toaster Boy Look closely and you'll see that 464 km/h turned into 463 km/h. I'm pretty sure they converted their shitty imperial units first and then converted those into metric units after each step.
