Used to have a lever action Winchester and 45-70, that thing kicked like a mule and hit like a sledgehammer. Used to shoot aircraft armor called noroc armor used in Huey helicopters with it, it would take those ceramic plates and smash them into powder, folding that 35 lb plate in two, the second round would rip the plate entirely in half, this is at about a hundred yards distance
@Sparks00psn

Sounds like some pretty useless “armor” because a ceramic plate used by foot soldiers will stop it

Just finished putting a scope in my 1895 tonight. I don’t like the looks of a scope on a lever gun but aging sucks and for ethical hunting I needed it! I hunt with it in OH because they require straight wall rounds. Not my first choice where straight wall not required. I wouldn’t try taking a deer beyond 100 yards with it anyway.

You did it again. Chin weld scope mount, I can see that your readers admire your shooting stile. seriously a low power scope mounted as low as possable would be a much faster rig. By the way I bought my Marlin M95 in 1972. It is a short range rig but I dont care.

The scope doesn't make me cringe near as much as the mount. Turns your cheek weld into more of a chin weld lol I think some lower rings will help your consistency. First rifle I learned on was a Marlin 336 in 30-30, iron sights with a Williams peep on the rear, and to this day I can still put 5 rounds on a Skoal tin at 100 yards but she's getting old (made in 1952) so I've been looking at upgrading to a newer model potentially with some glass on top. But you really can't beat an iron sighted lever action for still hunting through the woods, so who knows what I'll do

the numbers that they print on the boxes of ammo are typically achieved with test barrels that are usually much longer to produce "better numbers". usually the test barrel length will be optimized to burn all the powder to achieve the highest possible velocity. your barrel is probably 6" shorter than their test barrel, i would be interested to see what your chronograph results with that ammo/gun combo would be...
@archangel20031
@archangel20031 2 жыл бұрын
The factory most likely used a longer barrel and because of that had higher velocities. For my 45 Raptor, the ballistics published for that round (same as a 460 S&W) is usually for a 6 or 8 inch revolver barrel, so I get much higher velocities out of an 18 inch AR-10.

So your reality is you have a 150 yard rig. A 20” drop at 200 yards is no surprise. Wouldn’t mind seeing 1 round at 25 yards just for reference. Nice video. You are becoming more polished in your presentation and performing well in your chosen craft.

I’m with you. With a 2 inch scope mounting higth, a 25 yard shot could/would be useful.. with the typical gun scope set up there are 2 “zero”(s)” an ascending and descending. If his rifle was “zeroed” on the descending point of impact, a 29 inch drop at 200yrds would be expected.

I am sure that bullet is not leaving your barrel at 1,880 fps. If you incrementally lower the velocity input number in the ballistics caculater until the 200 yard drop equals 20 inches you will discover the actual muzzle velocity.

Barrel length has a lot to do with bullet drop as well. I have a marlin SBL and a Winchester 1885 both 45/70. Marlin has a 18” barrel and the 1885 has a 28” barrel. Same ammo shot out of both guns, hits very differently.

Barrel length affects bullet drop inasmuch as it affects the muzzle velocity of the bullet. The longer barrel will generally result in higher muzzle velocities, which will then result in less bullet drop.

I’m pretty sure the discrepancy in your real life results and what the box / BulletDrop chart says is due to your “ ACTUAL” muzzle velocity. I’d like to see you shoot that same ammo and some other 45/70 Govt. Ammo across your chronograph and then crunch those numbers. I think you’ll be surprised. As always another awesome video brother.

I bought that same Marlin 1895 four years ago and put a Skinner peep sights on it, turns out to be my favorite hunting rifle. I use the ghost ring for hunting as I have not ever taken a shot on a deer at more than 50 yards in the farm lands and woods of Indiana. I have taken deer with the Winchester 300 ammunition you demonstrated and I had no idea of the drop at 200 yards, interesting. I have other calibers in 30-30, 270, 308, and the forever default 30-06 however I like the 45-70 for brush as nothing stops it. Shot a buck through a sapling tree and dropped it like nothin was in the way so that's why we hunt deer with 45-70. OH! And I love the lever rifle. These bullet drop demonstrations are good information and we appreciate your efforts. Thanks for posting. How about the 338 Lapua magnum next? Barrow one from someone cause they're not on the budget rack :-)

Notice on even your rifle the factory site has an elevation ladder to move the site up to maintain point of aim. The drop was accounted for and some of the old military rifles adjusted past 1000 yards. Look into a yearly match called the Quigley shoot if you want to see what is possible with your 45-70

45-70 @ 100 yds or less is a flat trajectory. It doesn't matter the length of your barrel or bullet weight. Anything past 100 yards is a learning curve. Bullet weight and barrel length and distance suddenly changes dramatically. Personally I prefer a 405 flat nose up to 600 yds. Past 600 yds I will use a 500 grain slug. I'm shooting this ammo from a 1885 Winchester Highwall, 30 inch barrel and an 1874 Sharps also with a 30 inch barrel. I also have a Henry 45-70 lever action that I use for hog hunting. Our hogs in Northern Manatee county can easily top 600-750 pounds. You're only going to get one shot, 45-70 500 grain slug is the answer.

For those sayimg the barrel is to short thats just not true because most of the factory ammo is rated out of a 24 inch barrel and a 4 to 6 inch difference in barrel lenght dont make a huge difference not like a 6.5 cm or other long rang cartridges which have to have a longer barrel the 45 dont lose that much from inch to inch

My Henry 45-70 has a red dot, since I still hunt in the brush it is perfect for relatively accurate but very quick target acquisition. I have never shot at anything out past 100 yards, you just cant see that far where I hunt. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I have never had one go more than 50 yards after shot. Before that I used a model 94 30-30. That was OK, but you were never sure how far the deer would travel after being shot.

Slug your bore. Marlin 1895 tend to be overbore and mine measures .459". Factory ammo measures .458" to work in all makes of guns. That's why the 1895 generally preform very well with oversized lead projectiles that fill the whole bore... jacketed projectiles preform reasonably well, however lead projectiles generally preform better...

If your 100yd and 50yd are dead on, you need a 75yd. Because of your scope offset, 50yd may just be on your rise by pure chance. If 75 is 2in high, at apogee, that lets you know your just crossing planes at 50.

45-70 was originally designed for Black Powder. I wonder what kind of grouping you could do using black powder with a lead bullet. I'm betting you lose the heavy recoil, and drop velocity, gaining a flater shooting cartridge. 45-70 was made for 45 cal bullet and 70 grains of ff black powder.

On some of those programs, sight height is measured from the center of the bore. Not the top of the rifle\mounting area. This could throw you off in your calculations. So check in the program. Also barrel length plays a big part on velocity so Chrono the rounds to verify velocity before you run the chart.

That 1880 fps is probably from a 24" test barrel, and "optimistic" at that. You probably aren't getting more than 1500 fps. Some chrono testing will probably shed some light on things. If you watch real close and/or watch at 1/4 speed, you can see the bullets dropping in at 200 yards.

Sort of an idea of accuracy I’ve shot .223 casings at 75 yards with a Remington 700 chambered in.223 and I’ve shot 3/8” screws at 110 meters with a Dpms arms sass chambered in .308 every time I pulled the trigger. 3 rounds 3 screws, I couldn’t shoot the 4th screw because then we’d have had nothing to hold the target up 😂. Or a 20?inch barrel, this along with you're scope mounted so high above the bore center line causes a massive bullet arch at two hundred yards. Which will cause a lower impact. My scopes are mounted a cards width off my barrels . This improves everything on accuracy. Thx for sharing.

It would be interesting to see how it would group at 50yds, 100yds, and 200yds if it was zeroed at 150yds.

I zero my trapper at 150 yards. I'm about 3 inches high at 100, and around 10 inches low at 200. That's with a 300 sierra hp moving 1800 fps, real chronographed velocity.

Technically, nothing. But I get why he said it. Most think the 45-70 isnt for longer range due to how big and powerful the round is. But in all honesty the 45-70 can be extremely versatile depending on the load used and can compare to calibers like .300 win or 30-06 again depending on the load used

Here in Louisiana, we can use a muzzle loader, 45-70,.35 Whelen or a shotgun with rifled slugs as a primitive firearm before and after rifle season. The guns have to be single shot breakovers though.

Must remember, the ammo companies load so that an old trapdoor Springfield will not destroy your day. Some notable exceptions are Hornady and super hot loads by Buffalo arms etc. But they are clearly labled for modern firearms only. The Hornady 333 grain factory loads that I have purchased have a lable that states that they have the same trajectory as a .308 out to 350 yards.

I'd like to see how it would group and what the drop would be using a different brand of ammo like the Hornady leverevolution or even the federal ammo.

I’ve got the same 45/70 with a leupold vx3i 4.5-14x50. It’s pretty consistant with the super X ammo, but I have found mine likes the blue box federal 300 grainers. I’m hoping to take a deer with mine soon.
