I'm glad to see your still doing vids. I came across your channel over the past weekend and I got some questions I'd like to ask you. Your the sole reason I decided to stop arguing with everyone over building my 305 and to find me a 350.

Put the vasoline in the cavity first, then insert the gears. That way you get a full packing of the gears. Less muss, less fuss.

With Buick, AMC, and B/RB Mopar V8's that have external oil pumps(back when I was into working on stuff) - I also filled the new filter with fresh oil and spun it on fast after changing the oil. I also pulled the coil plug and used the starter to slow spin the engine until I saw oil pressure. ...this is in situations where it wasn't a new build, but rather just an oil change.

It's easier and more effective to load the cavity with vaseline BEFORE putting the gears in. It's a lot easier and the same for old AMC V8's, with the same design pump.

So wait, you have to pack petroleum jelly everytime you have a oil change?

@@michaelwoods3850 no, this is only when removing the oil pump for rebuild, or perhaps if the engine had sat for years without starting, and had lost its prime.

Nice work... That motor is so much like GM Holden v8s with alloy timing cover and oil pump... And Vaseline trick for pump....Love your channel its always great to watch... Keep up the good work 👍

Was waiting to see you perform the gear endplay check. .0015" - .002". The cover gaskets are selective. Once the gasket has been selected, then prelube the gears. Whatever you pack the gears with will end up in the oil filter. I use GM EOS (Engine Oil Supplement) as it is designed for operation in engines unlike petroleum jelly. Motor Honey or the old STP is a good assembly lube and not overly viscous.

Good to see some BBB information! Also consider checking the gear to the housing (or wear plate) clearance. Gasket kits are available with a variety of gasket thicknesses to help you get the correct oil pump clearance.

Awesome video. Something worth mentioning is that the oil pumps use different thicknesses of gaskets. If you use too thick of a gasket the pump won’t make oil pressure. I’m super glad I learned about setting the oil pump gear end play while priming it . Mine took the very thin gasket. Now I have a tiny leak😆🤷‍♂️ but oil light goes off while cranking .

Been there done that with Buicks though it was V6's but the same setup. I have seen old shop manuals that said to do the same thing to any gear pump like that.

I have a relatively fresh Buick 350 (12,000 miles) and it runs phenomenal. Quiet as a church mouse. No ticks, nothing. But when I’m full hot going down the hiway I won’t go much over 30psi. The only thing I can imagine is the paper gasket that came with the oil pump is not giving my proper clearance.

Hello, I overhauled my oil pump on the 455 Buick. it is a high volume pump. My question is, how easily does it have to be able to rotate by hand? or can the play between the gears and the pumen lid be large, including the seal?

We had a Dodge 440 that would lose its prime every time we changed the oil. We would have to put 2 gallons of oil in, disconnect the coil, crank until it built pressure and drain the extra back out.

I use the Molly graphite in the pump too to prime it the main thing is that it’s able to make a vacuum and prime for sure

In addition to blocking excessive oil from getting to the front timing cover seal and creating a leak, there is a primary or main purpose for the Oil Slinger. • Since the timing chain and gears on the crank and cam have no direct oiling, the Oil Slinger exists to provide what Buick engineers call a "splash oil system" there, so the Oil Slinger functionally directs or slings oil at the timing chain and gears -- simultaneously deflecting excessive from the front cover and crank seal.

Hey man thanks for the great video! I've never worked on a Buick till I bought a 65 skylark a couple years ago, my oil pressure is 20 at idle and 35-40 at cruising speed. Is the 300 basically the same as the 455 you're showing here. Also is it possible to replace/rebuild the pump with the motor in the car

That's why you turn it over without the main coil wire on so it can't fire,wait for it to build oil pressure first guy

The first time I saw the Vaseline method was on a Toyota 22R. The official Toyota manual actually calls for it. I never liked the idea of using Vaseline, due to the additives it doesn't have. I would have wanted to use heavy assembly lube. 8:05 I have heard of people using different thicknesses of sealing washers to get the exact oil pressure they want.

Now I'm worried, I ran mine with no oil pressure around a quarter mile home because the stupid plate cracked. Didn't make any unsusal noise

I have striped threads on the cover/adapter for the oil filter. My question is if I just replace that, do I still have to pack the gears with vasoline? and will they drop automatically once that cover/adapter is removed?

There's a cast iron "booster plate" kit available, it extends the life of the pump by giving the steel gears a harder surface to work against than the aluminum. Did you consider using one?

So I have a buddy who is looking to pick up a 71 cutlass with a 455. The car is not running. When I go to try to start the car what should I do to hopefully prime the oil.
