If you hit a large game animal with a hollow point and you hit it in a bone it will deflect in fragment if you hit it with a solid or hard cast bullet it will pass through the bone completely destroying the bone and hitting the internal organ
@xiaopeiyu2137

Go look at wound channels on ballistic gelatin. Even though most hollow points or ballistic tips are "rapidly expanding" they still take a few inches of penetration before it starts to fragment and shed mass. 99% of the time on elk or deer sized game that means it penetrates first shoulder, fragments through the vitals and them stop short or against the farside shoulder. You want a bullet to expend 100% of its energy I side the body cavity. Clean pass throughs are "wasted" energy. At least at reasonable ranges. If your shooting 1,000 yards yeah you'll need every bit of energy left used to penetrate and not expand

That worked out much like I suspected it would. Cowboy action loads are extremely light as they are used for competitions where the only goal is to hit a steel target and the timer is tripped when the shot goes off, not when it hits. Most people like soft loads as it aids in quick follow-up shots and there is no need to beat yourself up. Now I have HSM Bear loads for walking in the woods as I live in the Great Bear Rain Forest (That's grizzly country). You should follow up this video with one of those on a baseball.

The Hornady was engineered to have rapid expansion. That is why you saw what happened? You get pointed round for flat trajectory but as soon as it encounters resistance it blossoms. And that is with a lighter round than the others!

The entry whole on the Hornady baseball was because of tearing from higher velocity. The bullet DID NOT start expanding yet!

@billsutherland7486

Yep, it’s not surprising the hunting rounds were more destructive at 3” penetration. The 405 hard cast bullet is meant to pass through a very large mass of bone and still have a butt load of remaining energy to pulverize internal organs. The 300 and 305 grain bullets are meant for longer shots on smaller game, whereas the 405 is meant to drop a bear, buffalo, or moose in their tracks. Good fun, great video!

Reason for the different results the first two baseballs is that the law in most States is that you must use expanding bullets in rifles/hanguns the first two were expanding bullets and I could rewind but I do believe that the third round fired was a hard cast lead slug, which is a none expanding projectile leading to the popular belief that non expanding bullets mean a slower death to the animal

I have the BFR in 4570 and you are going to love it. I have a Trijicon 3 mao triagular aim point for a sight. Use the top of your triangle for 50 yards the whole thing closer and the base of the sight gives 3moa elevation reference for longer shots. I shoot the leverrevolutions through it with no problems. Wicked damage on armadillos and I have killed a pig with it too. You do need to practice at various ranges outside. On indoor range only resting the base of the handle I can get 5 round groups of 3/4 inch.

I still have several bowling pins and those are very hard to put a hol in. I shot one with 30-30 @25yds ,cant remember what grain . Surprisingly it didn't do much damage, the 223 needless to say barely did anything either. I got them from a bowling alley ,they throw away the old bowling pins so sometimes they give them away or sell them cheap . Each box has a dozen pins and they're fun to shoot, smaller caliber has a tendency to ricochet though

The cowboy bullets don't expand, that's why the exit hole was almost the same size as the entry hole. These would be great for larger varmint hunting (if you don't have a 22 cal rifle available), if you want to use the hide for making something out of it (in other words, not destroy the hide) and/or if you want to keep the majority of the meat.

The cowboy action rounds are meant for cowboy action shooting competitions so to gain the accuracy and show needed, they have to go with the minimum grains of powder allowed for that competition; very similar to trap and skeet comp rules. All comp shoot rounds have to be factory certified loads to compete; no personal reloads. Still a fun round to shoot and is my all-time favorite.

The HSM are hard alloy lead designed to resit deformation on impact and just penetrate deeply. There is slower energy transfer over a longer distance. It's a trade-off. Now, if you want to really launch a baseball, get a .458 Winchester Magnum and load it with 350 grain soft points, or a .50 BMG loaded with, well, anything. The .458 will send it off the property, and the BMG will send it into the next county.

won a 458 win mag in a drinking game back in the army, said i couldn't shoot it 1 hand with my off hand and not drop it or hurt myself. I was 165lbs. I prevailed. Just recently sold it after 20 years. Only fired it like 5 times in those 20 years. Fucker hurt.

The leverevolution is a hollow point with a soft tip insert. It blew out the ball the way it did because you hit it low. The 300 he jhp entered clean because it was a center mass shot, the exit is exactly what you should expect from that bullet. The 405gr hard cast C.A. did exactly what it should do... It's a hard cast bullet, it's not meant to deform, just pass through. Also, cowboy action means it's loaded light... It's meant for target shooting, not for hunting.

@mrsubase
@mrsubase 3 жыл бұрын
Ok. The leverevolution round is actually a hollow point cause the rubber tip used to prevent loading tube detonation goes away on impact. Also that round is hotter than hell. I could have told you it would do the most damage. The 404 grain bullet did the least damage as I would have expected. See anytime you out 400 or 500 grain bullets on a 45-70 the chamber pressure goes way up. So, normally the ammo companies soft load the round a bit to keep people from blowing their heads off. So actually it had the slowest muzzle velocity. Capish?

What did you expect? HSM loads GREAT ammo, the CAL load is down loaded, for obvious reasons, and is a solid bullet.... NO EXPANSION, SLOW MOVING, LOW RECOIL. Built for multiple shooting scenarios, NOT FOR HUNTING!!! I'm looking at their product list, they have 3 other loadings, including a 430gr hard lead "bear load" @1801fps. Your CAL load is listed @1300FPS, fully 500fps slower. They also list a 350gr A- Frame at 2050fps.

The 405 hard cast are made for deep penetration, bear skin, fat, muscle hide, thick bone. On into vitals .The 325 HP are made to make a big hole and only half the penetration of the 405. Love my 45-70! I use 325gr for medium game, but take the 405 in back country. Probably wouldn’t hurt to alternate rounds in the magazine.

I wish I had video of the muley we shot this year with the Winchester X. It was .243. This was number 5 deer, and one elk, with this ammo. It will not exit the animal, imparts all the energy within the animal, and has resulted in instant kills (with proper shot placement). Not real accurate, too much lead tip, but good short range hunting ammo. If you want to watch a great movie, showing the .45-70, watch "Wind River" on Netflix.

The 45-70 load you used for this video was listed to shoot at 1300 fps. Typical hunting loads for the 45-70 with 405 grain bullets is roughly 1900 to 2000 fps, so your observational comment of a lightly loaded bullet is correct. However, I use this bullet for hunting, albeit, with pure lead instead of hard cast, and I'd suggest you give it a shot with maybe the buffalo bore. Aloha...

I get them to reload my 30-30 the 165 gr bullet they seem more accurate for 1 and as far as i can tell they are very close to a hollow point that tip is like rubber so it has to melt or when it hits it disapates . Leaving a small hollow in it.. id like to try the 140 gr bullets for it sometime speed would increase i think.but these are just my thoughts on it . Great video

I had a Marlin 45-70 Guide gun, just like yours. I loved shooting the Cowboy loads, very light recoil. A bit over 1,000 ft-lbs of energy. They knocked things over, rang the gong. The Leverevolution, not so much fun. The recoil is stout with 3,000 ft-lbs of energy. The 300 grain Winchester's are probably loaded closer to normal pressure as it is a hunting round. This might explain the difference in results.

I have been shooting the 45-70 for over 30 years now and have learned a great deal from it. Hard cast lead bullets in this large yet slow (as factory loads are made) speed round will not expand significantly on any target other than something very hard like steal. If you want expansion you need to use soft (pure) pig lead with a paper patch to get this round to mushroom to about the size of a silver dollar! The 45-70 as it was originally intended is a slow but heavy round, there is not enough energy in the factory load to make hard cast lead expand. You can load it up much, much higher in a Marlin or Ruger #1 and the NEW reproductions of the Winchester 1886 because of the modern steal in them. Do Not try to load past SAMI recommended factory loads for the original Springfields or Winchester 1886's or any other antique gun made for this round! This is the reason you SHOULD NOT hunt with hard cast bullets with the 45-70 as it will just poke holes the diameter of the bullet through the game and unless you hit the heart ore a double lung shot the animal will most likely not be recovered and suffer heavily for an extended period. The 45-70 is a "door crasher" when loaded correctly as the inertia of the heavy slug even traveling @ 1300 fps (factory load) will carry it through any North American game animal at reasonable ranges. Love the 45-70!!!

Cowboy action loads are intentionally downloaded for closer targets and fast shots. They have to be all lead because some shots can be so close that jacketing would injure you or damage the targets.

45-70 is also my favorite hunting round, I shoot hand loads with a 250gr. Barnes X Bullet. The hard cast bullet is just to hard to expand and with anything less than a head shot will run away and may or may not die. You need that quick expansion like the Hornady has on game.

I cast my own 500 grain hard cast bullets with a muzzle velocity of 1650 fps. I shot a doe at about 50 yards . It slipped a rib going in and broke 1 on the exit. She went about 10 yards and dropped over dead. The bullet did not expand, and because of the low velocity you can eat right up to the hole.

Can only speak for .22 mags that Hornady makes, but...... if you look at the ballistic tip, it is basically just a piece of soft plastic molded into a pointed shape which fills the cavity of what is otherwise a hollow point bullet. Serves the purpose of making the bullet a bit more aerodynamic but does little if anything once impact occurs. I have to think (though admittedly I have not taken one apart) that the 45-70 is pretty much the same situation as my little .22wmr. It is therefore unsurprising that it basically exploded that baseball on impact. Any plans to shoot some baseballs or other sporting goods with the usual assortment of little rim fire rounds and see what happens?

That was poison ivy and five leafed Virginia creeper at ball #2. Virginia creeper is non poisonous and the berry is a favorite of grouse, pheasants, and turkeys. Poison oak is a western plant so I'm not familiar with it, not to say there wasn't any there in the video. Virginia creeper likes to climb to the tops of trees.

The hard cast 45-70 rounds are designed for penetration, not massive devastation at point of impact. Busting through a heavy bone like on a feral hogs shoulder or that of a bear, is critical to putting them down and out. The other rounds you showed are meant to open an immediate sound channel to bleed out smaller animals like deer, so you don't have to track them very far.

The HSM Cowboy loads are trapdoor safe. They're rated for 1300 fps. HSM makes some levergun rated Bear Loads that have the same bullet but rated at 1600 fps. Buffalo Bore and Grizzly makes some ridiculous lever gun 405 gr. hardcast rated at 1950 fps. and 2000 pfs. respectively. I recommend the Buffalo Bore. The Grizzly ammo I've bought has been poorly stored, corroded, and I suspect they are less careful than Buffalo Bore developing max loads. The Hornady is a hollow point. It just has a soft polymer ballistic tip to improve air resistance while preventing chain reaction in the magazine tube. You may have noticed that the Hornady warns against using it in revolvers. It kicks almost as hard as the Buffalo Bore in my 26" Marlin, but doesn't kick much harder than the HSM Cowboy loads in my BFR. I asked Hornady what was up with the revolver warning: "The BFR is the revolver we have had the greatest number of issues with and it seems to be related to the cylinder gap. The greater the gap the more of a chance there is that the bullet will lodge in the barrel or forcing cone. This, in part, is due to the fact LEVERevolution powder is a very slow burning powder. However, I will tell you that we have employees here who shoot this ammunition through their own BFR revolvers and have no issues at all; it really seems to be a gun to gun, potential issue." kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJ6TmHmce55-fMU I have shot the Buffalo Bore Magnum and Grizzly +P from the BFR. Be careful. They are ridiculous. 405 gr. @ ~1600 fps. Wear gloves and work your way up to them. The Cowboy loads have a good kick but they're not bad.

Nice shootin, Tex! Just guessing but the Hornady probably had the highest rating for FPS. Speed kills. Please go wash that urushiol (poison ivy oil) off your hands! If you wash the ivy oil off within a couple of hours this can keep you from getting the reaction. Make sure you use a soap that removes all of the oil and wash several times. Makes me itch just watching the video. You are definitely dedicated to your craft. Thank you for a fun video!

You said the lever revolution was a pointy tip, the only pointy tip is rubber And when It hits something the rubber tip pushes out the hollow point behind it before the bullet actually hits the hard object which means it will have a bigger hole going in than a standard hollow point.

Exactly what I was thinking about the hard cast, the hollow point is a standard hollow point but if memory serves me the leverevolution is a spin on the ballistic tipped ammo with a thin skin up front and a polymer/plastic windshield for a point and when it hits the target is supposedly going to start massive expansion. If that’s the design the baseball seemed to verify the technology. Lol

I figured the 405 grain would do the least damage, however I did not expect it to do so little. Like you, I'm not familiar with cowboy action loads. I suspect it's heavy in the lead to take down the steel targets, but light on the powder for reduced recoil. I'm sure of one thing in particular though, this was an awesome and exceptionaly entertaining video.

I am trying to look at a lever gun in 4570 as my next gun purchase though I've been thinking 3030 is well but I wanted 4570 because it can go from just a little bit above 30 30 as far as foot pounds to greater than a 12 gauge at up to 4600 foot-pounds at the muzzle I was thinking about getting one of the older guns with the ladder site then you can move up for the yardage vs one with the Buckhorn sight like what you have there.
@trailblazer632
@trailblazer632 6 жыл бұрын
Get the newer one. With vintage guns you really have to watch what loads you put in them since the 4570 was originally a black powder load. Current model marlin 1895 rifles are one of the very few that are rated to handle any load on the market today. You can always add the vernier ladder sights later if you want to go that route

I suspect the hornady round impacted low, causing the entry to be tumbling vs. direct hit. In slow mo, the target pulverized, and at comparison, you can see the orange paint from the clay pigeon on the front of the bball. Still great shooting. 1" or 2" off center at 25 yards is dang skippy.

Energy = Mass x Velocity (squared). That means velocity always trumps mass for down range destruction. A .22 caliber 60 grain bullet fired from a 22-250 has more muzzle energy than a 405 grain bullet fired from a 45-70.

Look at your ballistics chart past 400 yards. That's when the mass starts to Trump the velocities. When they both start to slow down to the point of crawling, the 45-70 still has 8X the mass of most 50 grain bullets out of a 22-250 (my favorite rifle of all time btw). Anyways, the 1st part of your comment references downrange performance but the end is quoting muzzle energy so Not sure what scenario your wanting to compare. Close range or down rangw
