It's somewhat fascinating how the shingle mill cants the block of cedar back and forth. Quite the mechanism. I take it there is a inch or so block left at the end? Probably the the shingle mill owner has plenty of kindling.

The block that is left is about a inch and a half usually and like you said fire starters.

That is one very odd setup for a shingle machine. I never seen shingles trimmed like this before . I have seen a few 2-person shingle machines used for training new Sawyers.
