However, its great to have an expert virtual tour of a boat that you hardly ever see here in Europe. Yes that is my concern too. The entry price is very attractive. The unknowns were maintenance and running costs scare me because I don't know trawlers. Would love to buy this, do the Great loop over a season or two and then sell it. but I scared of the running and maintenance costs and the engine pooping out and needing replacement.

there is so much more "boat" boat than modern fiberglass and carbon fiber. As an old navy vet, i really appreciate the look and I can imagine the smells coming out. A microwave oven near a wood burning stove. I guess that sums it up. I really liked the line work on the wheel--reminded me of some of my old and skilled boatswains mates. (I was First LT, one an LST) I would think the maintenance far exceeds the investment, but so nice.

In 1978 I owned a 1968 wood hulled 42' Grand Banks called Misty IV. completely redid the main salon and the staterooms and stripped and varnished all the mahogany rails and brightwork. We used it for albacore fishing off the Cortez Bank south of San Diego and shark fishing in Santa Monica Bay The boat hailed from Marina Del Rey A Basin.

Hi Cap. & Randy. How coincidental you would pick a GB trawler, when you mostly look at sailboats. My grandfather bought a brand new 36’ Grand Banks in the mid 80’s. Named her YOHO. I never got to go on long passages, however he took my mother up the BC coast. I did go out one weekend, which sparked my love for boats. He owned it for over 20 years. But, Because of that short experience , I LOVE boats. I’m on my 3rd, which is a beautiful deep V- 1983 -30’ SeaRay SunDancer. I’ve spent $20,000 getting it in great running condition. The interior is mint . (If you need a power boat to look at, hint hint). I’ll be putting it up for sale so I can finally get a sailboat. Which is why I watch your channel. That’s how I found it funny that you would stray from sailboats , and basically hit the the boat that started it for me. (Why did you stray from sail? ) As always, I can’t wait for each episode. You guys are great. Thanks for doing what you do!!!

Lovely… must have some good memories from that trip!
What a beautiful boat! You can tell the owner loves her. I even like the alterations because they make sense. I'm working on becoming a live-aboard, so I have looked at many, many boats online, partly just trying to learn about what's available and what would be best for my situation. This is now (I think) the third wooden trawler I've seen, but I've also done some research on the internet re wooden hulls, and what I've seen has caused me concern, in part around the reluctance of insurance companies to insure them, but also that it's supposedly difficult to find anyone who will work on them. And that, of course, would apply to wooden hulled sailboats as well. I heard you mention insurance companies requiring inspections every four years, but is there anything else you can tell us about that? Also about the difficulty in finding anyone to fix them or even haul them out? I'm very attracted to the older boats because of their character, but would love YOUR expert opinion on those things. If I was ready to pull the trigger, I'd be very tempted to take at look at this boat in person. Thanks for another informative episode.
@timhardman47643 жыл бұрын
I think I've also heard some Marinas don't allow wooden boats into their docks. I imagine you can still pull in to fuel up and get water so is it just a thing with docking or staying overnight or longer term or do they not even allow one to use a mooring ball???? Can anyone else comment who actually knows first hand. I do like this boat.

those slanty covers for the storage in the master cabin would be good for laying up several charts showing a long passage course. I'm curious about why and how you'd use that sail
@clivestainlesssteelwomble76653 жыл бұрын
It might help reduce your fuel burn on a passage with a favourable wind...it could get you home at a push if you had a motor fail but it would help steady her at anchor or underway in the face of a beam swell by slowing the rocking motion. I think he mentioned that at the very start.
@m1k3droid3 жыл бұрын
@@clivestainlesssteelwomble7665 I'd like to see how that is supposed to work, i would have thought that it makes it less stable.
@clivestainlesssteelwomble76653 жыл бұрын
@@m1k3droid If the swell is rocking the boat side to side being tall the rotations down near the water line or below..its like an air brake/fan. Sail boats especially with a ketch rig can part deploy their sail .. to slow the movement.. and keep the bow into the wind at anchor. You can also deploy flopper stoppers.

Wow, what an old boat. Looks pretty good. Likely only a few yards left that could maintain a wooden boat like this. But you’ll never have to worry about polyester-mites eating the hull. Great seeing the USMC flag. Expensive for a boat sporting a porta potty. Don’t think I’d want that thing. Stained glass works look like something picked up from a garage sale. Would be interesting to look at but…….

Hell yes there is a good reason not to want a wooden hulled boat; maintenance. If you take it to wa water, like Florida, you may find your boat sinking due to wood borere. To stop this you will need to haul out every year for bottom paint, adding thousands to your cruising budget. A boat built that long ago is going to have problems with the screws used to fasten the planks to the hull. If you keep it in cold water and never go anywhere, if you love working on boats rather than cruising, go ahead and buy it.
