The smaller ones are for a pebble mill, for grinding ash clinker for portland cement. In mining operations, they use them in secondary size reduction. If you have a question, I will answer to the best that I can, after 41 years in mining. Best wishes all.

That info Carl is spot on. When i worked on the Railroad here in Sydney Australia we hauled thousands of tons of those Grinding balls. They are used to grind and fine up ore and other minerals and also in cement mills. In fact an Australian owned company had a plant making them in Kansas City Missouri. We hauled them in drums and also loose in open top 20foot shipping containers.

Portland cement is a main ingredient of concrete. It is mainly made of limestone. Big junks of limestone are put in a tumbler with these steel balls and rolled over and over until the limestone is a fine, dust-like powder. The powder is then super-dried in a kiln and bagged up to use as cement.

40 years ago we hauled lots of grinding balls to Magna Ut...and Phoenix, Az area, (among other places) for the copper mining industry. Back then, we used flat beds with side kits to haul wheat into KC....then picked up bulk grinding balls to Utah....then sometimes salt pellets back to Kansas. Flats are interesting because of the variety of loads and places you get to see....but they are certainly a lot more work! Chains & binders.....lumber tarps...and even setting up & tearing down the side kits can leave you huffin' & puffin' lol. Not a bad deal for the younger guys, but it really takes it out of the older drivers.....doesn't it Dan?!

The grinding balls go into a 'ball mill'.. In the cement making process they mix various minerals together like sand, lime and other ingredients and then pass that mixture through a blast furnace which causes it to melt down into a slag.. that slag is put into the ball mills which are big metal drums full of those balls that spin to be ground up into a powder that is the final product, the cement that's used in concrete. If you ever visit one of those plants (portland cement for example) the sound those mills make is deafening.

Hey Dan, I hauled those grinding balls a few times before as well. We usually hauled them 2 barrels wide (rear of your load had 3 wide) and an older driver showed me a neat trick. He had me put my dunnage on top of each line of barrels then strap down as close to center of the barrels as possible. That would help keep them from rocking out of the straps should a strap slip. Enjoy your videos. We met a couple years back in Louisville getting our inspections done and I was having an ABS valve put on my W9 when you pulled up. Safe travels.

my 1st trip to Florida, i mentioned the roads were great, and a driver laughed, he said "they're great now, cause they just laid new asphalt, otherwise they'd be rough as hell." later when i got down around Miami, i saw what he meant. place is too humid for me. with the old batteries that you had to add water, not the enclosed ones of today, you had to check your radiator and battery lvls to make sure they were full, otherwise Florida's humid weather would suck em dry.
