I agree with you all...I just meant the narrative of Brock being bad. Most people see that throw and think "bad throw by Purdy". I saw him yelling and knew immediately it wasn't on him. He doesn't get mad at receivers unless they messed up the route

It looks like Ray Ray was supposed to flatten the angle on his route and run towards the numbers and keep running. It was probably a play call designed for Deebo and Ray Ray was plugged in with no clue what to do.

I caught that too but wasn’t sure what I was looking at, Brock was pissed. I suspected Ray Ray was supposed to turn in sooner because that’s were the ball was and Brock was talking to Ray Ray after the play on the sidelines

I noticed this play right away in game. I didn't see Kyle's reaction, but I sure saw Brock's and Ray Ray's. Ray Ray was supposed to do a double move, cut out and then into the post where he would have been wide open and with his speed would have beaten the safety to not only the spot but with the safety's angle Ray Ray would have beat him to the goal line. Had he made the right move, Brock would have hit him in stride rendering that safety moot. The WAY Ray Ray recovered and tried to get inside to the ball was my first clue he broke the route. Then he hung his head and looked immediately at Shanahan making it clear he knew he'd broken the route. And then Purdy getting demonstrably pissed was the clincher given how calm and cool he is under almost all circumstances. I was pulling my own Shanahan in my front room as the end of the play unfolded.

I love that you detailed this. But here's what's confusing to me. OK, it was supposed to be a double move... cut out, then cut in. I agree, he would have been open and then would just have to make a move on the safety and then waltz into the end zone. I totally see that, however, when you see the film, you see Ray Ray get open and beat his man very quickly and very badly. At that point, why not turn and go straight upfield where there's tons of green grass... run parallel to the sidelines. ... where there's no safety waiting for you. Your thoughts?
@jackmetcalf338
@jackmetcalf338 5 ай бұрын
@@raylewis1355 You make a great point, and I think if it was Deebo, Kittle or Aiyuk they may have done that and Purdy probably makes the adjustment for a TD. I call those if/then''s. If the DB does this, then change to a fly instead of the post. In this case the DB fell down and the safety was in the middle of the field still. They have enough chemistry that Purdy and those receivers would have known to make that change mid-route due to their extensive experience and chemistry with one another. Heck, I think McCaffrey and Juice fall into that same category and maybe even Jennings. But Ray Ray has been out most of the year and when he is healthy he doesn't get a lot of practice or game time at WR with Purdy so I think they have to stick to the script for the most part. Ray. Ray was the 2nd read as Purdy hits the end of his dropback and is looking at Jennings for his first read, but the LB has it covered up underneath at that point so he moves to his second read. He puts the ball where Ray Ray was supposed to go, but Ray Ray doesn't go . . . well he doesn't really go anywhere. He is open and drifts toward the sideline instead of cutting it up toward the flag as you suggest or in toward the post as Purdy clearly expected. You can even see that ecause he just drifted there toward the sideline, it allowed the DB to get back into the play. He should have been moving toward the goal line to maintain separation. My guess would be he brain farted and thought he was supposed to settle into a zone despite what looks like man to man to me. Honestly, I think if Ray Ray had done what you suggest instead of drifting at the point he was supposed to cut it in, Purdy may have noticed he broke route to the flag and put the ball on him toward the flag. Because Purdy saw him at the 2nd move cut point, he threw where he was supposed to go because he didn't see that Ray Ray had begun to drift rather than make his cut decisively. This is the only way I can make sense of the way the play unfolded and how Griese (not Shanahan), Purdy, and even Ray Ray reacted. I'm definitely open to other interpretations.

@jackmetcalf338 wow man.... how refreshing to talk to someone who really knows ball. Thanks a ton, man. I'm not sure why I love this kind of stuff... but I do. I guess I'm a football junkie like you. I really appreciate this chat with you. So, you make two realllly good points. 1) The way RR ran his route actually allowed the DB to get back into the play. After he was badly burned. I saw that too, and was like, "HOWWW did the DB get back to the play? That should have nevvver happened. " RR toasted this dude in the first 5-8 yards... shoulda been an easy 6 points. And second. The chemistry thing. I'm sure if Kittle, or probably all of the other weapons Purdy has, burns their guy at the beginning of the route, and the safety is in the middle of the field and you are on the edge, Purdy's guys turn it up field 100% of the time. I would think that's how it should be taught. But you're right about the chemistry thing with RR. Thanks for the chat. It's nice to talk to someone who knows what they are looking at.

@jackmetcalf338 thx man. Ya, anytime you wanna hack up the weeds, let me know. Here's something for discussion... maybe later after this Sunday. So I am big on fundamentals... in particular, blocking, tackling, and WRs and RBs not turning upfield. I see wayyyy too many DBs, and even LBs tackling high (stuuupid) and all around just pussin out on making tackles. Plz plz find me a Ronnie Lot! Somewhere. Anywhere. And blocking, some got it, but a lot dont. These guys are pros! Geez. I just don't see the fundamentals like I think they should have. Which brings me to WRs and RBs not turning upfield. Holy cow man, you got 2 yrds to the sticks, lower your head, and blow up that dude for 2 measly yrds. No, these guys turn and run horizontal... and what happens? They wind up 2 yards from the sticks. It blows my mind. The 1st down marker and the end zone are in an obvious direction... GO THA T WAY BRO. I'm ranting... but do ya feel me on that?

In soccer there is a saying, but it pretty much applies to any sport. It is not who plays the best who wins, it is who scores the most points that wins. As long as Purdy keeps raking up the W's, call him game manager or whatever you like. I remember the same criticism about Montana, that he only looked good because of the system he played in. Well, it's not like a player has a choice, you play in the system of the team that drafted you.

Not only the inclement weather & the reality of playoff football complicated things but have to remember this is a team that had a couple weeks off, plus players coming back from injuries: doesn't surprise me a whole lot that it took a bit for the train to leave the station lol - thank god it did just in the nick of time. I expect to see 9ers rolling again next week. Ray-Ray got some issues if the rumors are true (aside from goofing his play) noboby needs that attitude on their team.

There were a few throws like this were Brock does what he is so good at which is throwing to a spot accurately and on time. However if the receiver gets thrown off his route or has his timing disrupted it ends up looking like Brock just missed his throw rather than the receiver not getting to the spot. The most obvious one was the missed throw to kittle over the middle. Brock put the ball where it was supposed to be but the LB did a great job of disrupting Kittle's route and it ended up looking like Brock just missed him.
