4G Dumbphones: Get one with KaiOS!

One year ago, I advised against getting a 4G dumbphone with KaiOS. I am officially reversing that recommendation!
After purchasing a Nokia 8110 4G and playing with it for 1 month, I'm actually pretty speechless, and that IS rare.
Despite Google's investment of $22 million in KaiOS over 1 year ago, Google's services remain "add-ons". IOW, KaiOS has NOT become Android Lite.
KaiOS is KaiOS, and there's some Googley stuff on the phone that you can either use, or not. Better yet, you can block the Google apps from doing much of anything.
Even better, KaiOS is basically what PWAs will become on normal smartphones: KaiOS apps are actually just HTML5 + CSS + Javascript, running on a Gecko-based browser engine tied tightly to a small linux kernel.
The end result is the perfect non-Android, Google-enabled dumbphone. You can do stuff like Facebook or WhatsApp if you want, but there are NOT Android-type apps.
Note that the KaiOS app store is totally separate from Google's Play store, and there are 130+ apps already available - and growing daily.
So, for your new dumbphone, give KaiOS a try!

I use a dumb phone, it fits in my pocket, no broken screen, dropped it many times, fits in my tool belt at work, and if I lose it or some how break it, it cheap to replace, so why are they dumb? sounds smart to me.

I would be out of buisness within 2 weeks if I attempted to switch to a "non smart phone". Key is to add a watch to it that doesnt need to be tethered via bluetooth. You can still get make and accept calls and you dont have to worry about losing a phone, pulling it out, or any of that nonsense. Plus if you do have any emails or notifications they will go to the watch. But I also bought 4 prepaid phones with rollover minutes (60 mins each that never expire) and activated them, charged battery to 100 percent, then turned them off and stuck them in glove boxes of each car with a car charger. I paid 220 bucks for all 4 phones (3g) that are the size of a small bic lighter and 60 min calling card for each. Saftey first.

@@fabjonjon Well my little flip phone does have BT, I use a ear peace that I can accept calls, don't get me wrong , flip phones are lousy on texting, and other things, like writing down information, I use a smart phone in my truck that can connect to my flip phone, but only use it in my truck, smart phones are just to delicate for most construction sites. A pencil and frame work are great for writing down information, and a pencil does not need to be recharged :) Stay safe out their, nothing like hitting your hands with a hammer early on a cold morning as your BT shouts at you, and your aim is put off for a mili second. :)

Hi, first time I've checked out your reviews. Impressed. The presentation was thoughtful, clear, informative. It gave me quite a lot to think about which I appreciate. Well done you. The limitation of the direction / selection 'blob' that you found so irritating is one of two things about the phone that make me a little dubious about using it. The other one is the prehistoric numeric keypad - press twice for a, press three times for b, etc. I can imagine going full on Hulk at using it. A look at the interior, cover off, for the phone to show what size SIM card etc would be used would have helped. Appreciate your time and expertise, thank you for the review. Take care, keep safe

I am going to be in the market for another phone in the not too distant future and have been wondering if I would find anything I like. My phone of choice is always the flip phone, so I will be watching for the Nokia 2720. Also, I guess I need to do some self educating... always thought a smart phone was one that could access the Internet. So now need to get an understanding of the difference. One thing I DO know... I want nothing to do with 5G. Thanks again!!!

Don't worry, you're not the only one who is confused by all this stuff, because it IS confusing. In short, a smartphone does calling and texting and can run apps and access the internet. Dumbphones were more for just calling and sending text messages. But now with dumbphones running KaiOS, dumbphones are quasi-smart... You can install apps that do stuff, you can access the internet, and you can do normal phone stuff. But dumbphones are less powerful than smartphones (computational power). Of course, if you don't want any of the fancy "smarter" stuff, just don't use it, and Bob's your uncle. Piece of cake, right? ;)

KaiOS with some Google features; wouldn't that mean that this "dumb phone" is still smart enough to rope people into their corrals of privacy-deprived, data-compromised consumers? To me, one of the primary reasons for not using a smartphone is to improve one's privacy and security by unplugging from google,amazon,and social media (besides, in many cases, reclaiming time for more meaningful pursuits). At 67 and a long-time smartphone user, I'm in the process of selecting a basic flip phone so I can better protect my data and personal privacy, as well as simplfying my lifestyle. Am I understanding correctly that KaiOS is simply a slower, narrower gateway to the problems I'm trying to shut the door to as much as possible? Thanks, Scott -- great channel!

I enjoyed your video. Nokia mobile phones are excellent. I have the 3310 (a remake of their old design) and really like it. It is tough, and it snaps back together easily if accidentally dropped. I prefer it's simplicity over the "smart" phones most people use today. I think the slider phone you reviewed is very similar. I can't wait to see the new flip-phone that's soon to be released. Small mobile phones are so much easier to carry and don't need a WiFi connection to get text messages, or to use different features that "smart" phones have. I still have concerns about Google's involvement with the company. They are just too big and powerful, in my opinion. Also, can "Duck, Duck, Go" or Quant be installed on these phones instead of Google (for search)? I suppose they can be used in addition to Google as the operating system is kaiOS, right? Anyway, keep up the good work. p.s. - what do you think about apple iphones (for touch-screen)?
@ScottiesTech
@ScottiesTech 5 жыл бұрын
The KaiOS app store has 130+ apps, but no DuckDuckGo as of yet as far as I could tell. Of course, you can always use the browser and search via DuckDuckGo. I'm also a bit hesitant still about Google's involvement, because they always try to vacuum up data. On the other hand, one doesn't have to use those apps, they can be more or less blocked, and the apps that are there are just basically web pages (like PWAs) as opposed to "real" Android apps. So, at this point, it looks to me like the possibility for exploitation is fairly low. That may change in the future, but we'll see.

On the messaging screen, or anywhere else there's a text input box, press and hold the big "center" button on the keypad for a bit, and GA will pop up and write whatever you speak. Of course, that means it's all being fed through Google, but since you don't have to enter your Google Account or e-mail or anything else to use it, there is at least a bit more privacy.

The default apps cannot be uninstalled without a bit of hacking: sites.google.com/view/bananahackers/customizations/uninstalling-pre-installed-apps The T9 thing probably isn't that bad once you use it bit, but I was more used to the old-school Nokia method of tapping buttons 300 times to cycle through letters (crazy, but true).

That's a good question. From what I can tell, they are definitely more secure than your average smartphone. On the other hand, that security seems to be more about securing your data from hacking and such, and not necessarily from preventing tracking data and the like from getting into Google's hands. So, in the end I'm not sure.

But i am happy, the ohone feels rugged as fuck, nice big buttons, brilliant sound when it rings. Did i say i am in love again with my phone? Actually i never wanted a smartphone, but was talked into it but now i am no slave from Google anymore but i am free!

Can 4G dumbphones still be used with 5G? I have heard that they will phase them out..

No, but as I understand it, initially 4G will be used to establish a 5G connection with new 5G phones. So, 4G should be sticking around for quite awhile, especially since it will take years for 5G to roll out everywhere (thank goodness).

This makes no sense, the whole point of having a dumb phone is that the battery lasts for weeks. There is no other reason to own one, If this isn't that much better than a smart phone then you might as well just buy a smartphone with a small screen!

Why do we need any "G"s??? I thought a dumb phone had no need for wifi???
@ScottiesTech
@ScottiesTech 5 жыл бұрын
Dumbphones don't need to have WiFi, but in order to work as cell phones at all, they must be 2G, 3G, 4G, or 5G. Those G's just refer to a particular generation of cell phone tech. There's a lot of confusion out there about this though, mostly because some equipment makers and service providers refer to WiFi as 2.4G or 5G, which that's actually 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, which refers to the frequency used. But wait, there's more! WiFi also has it's own generational versions... although those are usually labeled WiFi 5, WiFi 6, etc... But I've seen the "G" added in there, as well. It's enough to make you go cross-eyed!

There's a setting in there for downloading updates over WiFi only, or also over the cell data connection. I changed mine to WiFi + cell data, and it was able to grab the latest update okay. If that's not it, I'm not sure what the problem is...

Banana phone!!! I was considering 8110 but ended up with a slightlyLessDumbAndroidPhone instead. I liked KaiOS but there aren't some apps I'd like to see and more importantly I don't want any preinstalled google apps. There may be no account but google can probably still correlate some unique advertising identifier to your home cookies when you are connected to your lan. So at this point, you can probably degoogle android phone more easily: Choose aosp base rom like lineageOs (buy slab that has official lineageOs support); avoid all google apps and install foss from F-droid (k-9mail, osmand maps, openCamera, Fennec browser, NewPipe youtube...); replace chrome webview with bromite webview; get rid off android keyboard and use eg. anySoftKeyboard; change connectivitycheck portal or disable connectivitycheck altogether.If you really need some playstore app even after thorough reconsideration, get it from auroraStore, check for trackers using classyShark and optionally run it in Shelter(work profile) for more control. if you think you need playstore or google play services, there is still microg, cool project that tries to emulate google's play services functionality for applications that rely on them.

Well, I did assume that Google would fully "android-ify" KaiOS, and at least that didn't seem to happen. Plus, since KaiOS apps are basically web pages like Progressive Web Apps, that's also good news in my book. I figure if a year+ has gone by and KaiOS hasn't been "converted" by Google, that's also good news. I won't be using the Google apps very often, except maybe Maps every now and then. As you say, nothing's perfect - but hopefully we can get a bit closer with a good form factor, big buttons, and a not-totally-evil OS + apps.

I should add that normally, I don't have THAT much trouble with the 8110's keypad. In the vid, it was extra-difficult becuz I had to hold the phone at an angle to avoid glare from my lights. That said, I do normally have to use my fingernail to tap the buttons, and it's NOT big enough by any stretch. So, I'm very much looking forward to trying out the 2720 Flip. We'll see!
