Even the dark back alleys with "dirty restaurants and bars" are litter free and cleaner than most streets here.
@TsusakuCohenat3 жыл бұрын
Tokyo is mostly very clean, but there are some littered places,. Though the problems are mostly at garbage bins. There is very small numbers of them everywhere and sometimes (actually often) can be too full with garbage, which then spills around the garbage bin. There are some other cities that are not so clean as Tokyo. I was actually surprised with the differens between Tokyo almost everywhere and Osaka back alleys, which were somewhat littered, mostly ciggaret butts. Though it's still in no way so dirty as other countries.

Japan is so beautiful. You see so many disenchanted expats who go there and down talk the country because it doesn't live up to their stupid fantasies, or they experience culture shock after telling themselves they would fit perfectly in that society. Japan shows that it's not cities that are the problem but people who live in them and badly designed cities like a lot in America that have failing infrastructures and are built around cars instead of people. The only match in the west would be scandinavian cities. While I don't want to live in Japan (I would be too out of place in the culture) I would like to take a vacation and spend at least two weeks there.

I used to live in japan for two and a half years. Here's what's happening. The country is widely xenophobic. You will meet good people and you will make some good friends nonetheless. But there's discrimination (widespread too). As an example: A lot of landlords blatantly don't allow you to rent with them just because you're a foreigner. (Yes, I know they're right because some foreigners just bail on them without paying rent but it's still discrimination). Speaking Japanese (not 'I learned from anime uwu', but actual Japanese) will help you with discrimination as people are at ease when they can communicate with you in their own language as well as being polite will help. Also, being at least somewhat in sync with their culture and not completely oblivious to anything going on around you will also help. Now, the truth is, that back in 2013-14, it was tough to go to Japan and actually stay there unless you had a degree/a sponsor/two dragons/ three hundred gold coins and seven magical spells than can help against ghosts. The immigration system was very tough so pretty much most of us (people that I met including me had to go). Long story short, I settled in the UK after living in Greece (my country), Prague and California for a few years. Do you know what? I'd happily go back to live in Japan for reasons: Every major city (apart from Japanese ones) has a BIG crime problem. London specifically (where I'm living now) and Athens (I'm from Greece). Also, most places I've been are lacking that magic that Japan has, just walking down the street. There's a distinct feeling you don't get anywhere else. There's also the culture that has a lot of pros (e.g. politeness, fake or real doesn't matter, I appreciate it, the food culture, personal space respected, quiet demanded on places like trains and others) and I appreciate all of their pros a lot more now that I miss them back in Europe. Also their immigration policies are loosening up (first one was in 2018 and now 2021 has another one coming in) so I'm actually thinking of going back to live there, if possible of course and trade crime with discrimination. I'd happily take some discrimination if I'm calm that my partner can safely walk down the street without me sweating if she's coming back in one piece from Wood Green or East Ham (London people will know). TL;DR it's not the ideal place that you see in movies, you have to go there expecting some bullshit to happen that you can't escape but it has its ups and downs but it's overall better than your average major city in Europe.
