That's why some people say between the Swiss Federal Railways and the Rhaetian Railway, Switzerland has the best passenger railroads in the world on a per-person basis. Japan's railways are amazing but mostly in its metropolitan regions.

@RailwayEmotions2 жыл бұрын

@jonkess2768 Жыл бұрын
@@RailwayEmotions But don't you need a wider pantograph for German overhead wires? Is Konstanz build with less zigzag in its wire then? Do you speak German? Maybe that's easier
@RailwayEmotions Жыл бұрын
@@jonkess2768 The Germans have a wider zigzag, that is correct. There is always a certain point where that changes and the station (or even a whole section of track) in between allows both. Konstanz, Basel (SBB and DB), Schaffhausen, Singen, Buchs SG and St. Margrethen can be used by both pantographs. The Re 460 only has Swiss pantographs. And yes I do speak German ;-)

Does SBB have railhead treatment trains to make the rails less slippery in the leaffall season? I suppose they use those Windhoff multi purpose vehicles for that?
@RailwayEmotions2 жыл бұрын
The rails are grinded regularly to meet a specific profile, but not to make them more grippy. Keep in mind the rails are in place for multiple decades, if they were treated with grinders every autumn, they wouldn't last as long.

Why is the Re 460 a slippery locomotive compared to older locomotives?
@kennichdendenn2 жыл бұрын
If I had to guess, for efficiency reasons. As it gets more slippery, there isn less friction, which wastes energy.
@RailwayEmotions2 жыл бұрын
The Re 460 was quite a bit innovative, with the first fully ergonomic (not by todays standards ;-) ) cab that was designed with inputs from drivers, it has permanent magnetic brakes instead of the much more common spring parking brake and many more things. It does all its braking with generative braking only, using the pneumatic brakes only for the last 5 or 6 km/h to zero. This is why its wheels are very slippery, they rarely come in contact with brake pads, plus they are made of a plastic material anyway. Older locomotives had cast iron brakes. It made the wheels much more rough, much louder, but also much grippier.

@RailwayEmotions2 жыл бұрын
