Beautiful engineering by Dr Kurt tank.My favourite variant was the D type designated "Dora" by the allies, it had many innovative ideas push button control switches and an elongated fuselage which dispensed with the earlier stubby look of the A variants. The allies comparable design to match it was the Tempest and Typhoon fighters ,but for sheer simplicity and design and servicing the FW 190 was well placed. They also performed in the defence of the Reich and a squadron was designated as a "sturmstaffel" ramming unit employing this suicidal method of attack against the allies bombers. Kurt Tank the father of this aeroplane relocated to the subcontinent at wars end to help in taking these countries into the jet age .

This is the original F-AZZJ which had to ditch into the ocean after a failure in the electric prop pitch controls, and Flugwerk had to redesign the propeller pitch to fix the problem. It was salvaged and finally rebuilt for Hangar 10. The water damage was considerable including burst fuel tanks. img1.pictaero.com/2010/06/21/s/89541.jpg

I'm assuming they already "pulled the engine through" to make sure it wasn't hydro locked with oil? I know that's an issue with radial engines, but they probably did this prior to the startup, or was the engine already warm/previously ran? Didn't seem to smoke like some of the American radials. Either way, I still think this was an amazing machine and not many survived the war

@wrathofatlantis23162 жыл бұрын
Allied WWII pilots who tested it were immediately surprised how rough the FW-190A ran. They asked captured German pilots about it and they said “yes, that’s normally how it runs”... In particular, it had a vibration running up the control column that killed your sense of touch. This is not that big of a deal apparently, since today’s Superstallion helicopter (biggest US military helicopter) has the exact same issue... The strongest point by far of the FW-190A was its small turning radius at low sustained speeds: The Russians, who were expert at turn fighting (to the point they found the Spitfire poor at this, and modified their tactics to hit and run when flying it) said of the Anton: “It turns better than the Me-109. The FW-190A will inevitably offer turning combat at minimum speed. Orekov: "An experienced FW-190A pilot will never use hit and run tactics ('the vertical")": Always use high speed and vertical maneuvers when fighting it.” (Red Fleet #37) Even the Spitfire’s top ace, and the top expert on killing FW-190As, with over 20 Anton kills, Johnny J. Johnson, describes his Spitfire Mk V (the best turning variant) as being badly out-turned at low speed and low altitude in “my duel with the Focke-Wulf”. The 190 had terrible high speed handling however, sinking tail down while imposing massive Gs on the pilot, this by mushing ahead instead of turning... But that did not really matter, as the dominance of high speed hit and run over slow speed turn fighting was a mistaken 1930s assumption. Slow speed turning easily broke high speed attacks, because the 1% hit rate typically needed a lot of target time. That is why the Anton was so highly regarded. See my channel for more details...

This machine runs on 87 octanes but your not suppose to know that. The spitfire and p51 used up to 150 octanes way for them to increase boost! Germany and Japan always suffered from fuel shortages and heck still took on the world. One last thing the RAF was a joke they had to beg 20 countries for help and summer 1940 America supplied the 100 octanes while the English pilots mistreated the Polish pilots

@FiveCentsPlease4 жыл бұрын
+paulmurphy42 You can see "stolen" Fw-190s in the film below but they are war trophies and not stolen. This "stolen" Fw-190 story bugs me, so someone can provide more accounts to prove it. After VE Day pilots with the 354th FG were bored and made arrangements to hitch a ride to the German airfield at Linz, Austria where there were abandoned Fw-190s. They were going to joyride in them and fly them back to base. This was all pre-arranged. Lt. Bruce Carr and Lt. Fred Fehsenfeld flew two Fw-190s back, but I do not know if any other pilots participated. Bruce Carr could not get the landing gear down and in the film below you see him trying to explain his way out of plowing a Fw-190 into the airfield. Then you see Lt. Fehsenfeld making a better arrival back to base in his new toy. Allied commanders soon put a stop to joyriding in German planes. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i6e7Y5SJqLVmjsk
