4K TV for streaming Netflix, Amazon Prime & Disney+

4K TVs are very common nowadays, and many consumers only use their 4K TVs to stream their favourite movies and TV shows directly from OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon prime video, Disney+ hotstar etc.
There are three things to note before making a purchase of your next 4K TV.
1) 4K Content on OTT platforms isn’t that common
25%-30% of the content on most OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+ hotstar is currently not in 4K. Some of the noteworthy recent day titles like Squid games, Money Heist, Stranger things on Netflix aren’t available in 4K.
2) Cost of Streaming 4K is very expensive
4K streaming plan by Netflix is very expensive, so is the case for Disney+. Amazon prime videos have proven to be very economical when it comes to the amount of content they offer on 4K. On the other hand 4K streaming can be very heavy on your internet data usage.
Full HD streaming will take 1.9 GB - 2.55 GB per hour
While 4K ultra HD will take 3.5 GB - 7GB per hour
3) Not all content on OTT platforms support formats like HDR 10 or Dolby Atmos 5.1
When we say HDR, we are relating it to all kinds of HDR - HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Vision and Technicolor. All of these formats are used by the filmmakers for colour science & has nothing to do with resolution.
On the other hand manufacturers have created technologies like Upscaling to fit low resolution content on 4K TVs so they look nice on your screen. At the same time using intelligent image engines to make the picture look better in higher resolution.
Upscaling technologies by Manufactures :
- Sony's 4K X-Reality PRO
- Samsung UHD Picture Engine
- LG has Picture Master Processor and, on its OLED TVs, the Alpha 9 Processor
- And recently Samsung offered 8K AI Upscaling on its 8K Q900R TVs.
Hence before purchasing your next 4K TV ask yourself these three questions?
What content you will be mostly watching?
What will you be willing to pay for OTT plans?
And what is your distance of your viewing?

Amazon prime in my tv's native app(Hisense u6g) shows only 'hd'for most Indian Amazon originals and other indian movies available in Uhd while playing the content. But all English Amazon originals like boys shows Uhd while playing. Even though they shows' hd ' ,quality of the video is topnotch and looks like 4k .is that bug in the app?

Hi Rahul, not at all. Firstly, let me know the name of an Indian Amazon Original which you aren't seeing a 4K Resolution. Chances are they aren't in 4K to begin with. And even if something is in HD quality, there are other parameters which can enhance your viewing experience like Dolby Vision HDR which is there in Hisense U6G series. What you might be also experiencing would be the in-built UHD AI upscaler which comes with the H6G series. So even a genuine non 4K content might be looking sharper and crisp due to that.

@@TechTakeaway No sir, this was posted like 5 days back. So i brought a firestick 4kmax for my older tv(normal firestick was only necessary, but i want to check this issue and it will also support dolby atmos for a external soundbar as earc port was not available in my u6g ) To my suprise, the clarity of uhd in firestick was identical to my tv native app. Infact i would say, in native app of tv it looked better. So it's necessary a bug which showed hd in amazon prime. For indian shows-i played panchayat, modern love,made in heaven, family man and new movies like pushpa. They were all uhd.

Well they should ideally. And still most streaming service is catching up to streaming 4K on mobile apps. Here is something from the Disney's app itself, where they mention how they are working on it "Premium users will also be able to enjoy 4K content, if the content is available on 4K. 4K is enabled on our latest App on Fire TV, Apple TV and Android TV. We are working on introducing this feature on other devices and in the meantime appreciate your patience in this matter. "

Nope, movies or shows will play at the frame rate they might be shot in. If you are watching a youtube video at 60FPS then it will play, but not movies and shows.

Hi, Are you talking about black bands in top and bottom of content. Then that is due to the content ratio Vs TV ratio. There should be option in any modern TV to fit the content to viewing area, but I wouldn't recommend as it will cut some area out. If you have Amazon prime membership, try watching Jack Ryan series or Mrs. Maisel. They both should play 4K in full screen.

Sir please help me... I bought hisense u7h tv. It isn't able to play 4k content on amazon prime. Hdcp 2.2 is required for playing 4k content on amazon prime. I couldn't find out whether it is in my hisense u7h or not. Plzzzzz help

Apple TV is 4k HDR and it's not expensive. BBCI I player has plenty 4k HDR content, and you only pay lisence fee . Sky TVs movies, sports and a lot of series's are 4k HDR. So I'm not understanding what your going on about. Sky charge £6 a month extra , apple include 4k HDR free of charge. I don't like HDR content anyway colours are off and a lot of content is too dark. Just look at house of dragons and John wick 3, characters disappear altogether.

All the videos labelled UHD on Amazon Prime are in 1080p , at least all those i've tried to watch , if the 4K TV dosen't show it , your PC will , i have tried several : zero UHD ..... I call this a fraud , period ..... I'm trying the free Amazon Prime trial , and i think of the people who pay for that .... It's a shame ....

Im late to the party to a dumb video. You just pointed squid game and stranger things are not in 4K seriously just because Netflix doesnt mention 4K in its HDR content it doesnt mean it isnt in 4K. Only Non HDR 4K content on Netflix are labelled as Ultra HD 4K. You lost me in 1st 2 mins.
