This is actually crazy, I never considered how dehydration would effect my brain. Can't help but feel how much I've been holding myself back in general just by not drinking enough water. Making me feel like I've been operating at 70% mental capacity all my life LOL

I think it's hilarious that as soon as he mentioned the brain being a water sponge, and dehydration affecting it to a greater degree than the body, i noticed you were hydrating at the same exact time that i was 😂

this is all so true, here is my dehydration story as someone who simply forgets to drink water because i drank 1-2 small coffees a day and basically no water, yes, no water, sometimes a glass of water and on top of all this my job was demanding me to walk a lot and do a whole bunch of repetitive motions i came home from work and craved flavored pork sausage we call "kulen" in croatia, it goes well with olives, bell pepper, cheese, bread and garlic, i am someone who LOVES garlic i will eat the whole thing, not just a few cloves, after this ofc i craved water, i really had a different sensation of wanting water, i drank a lot, went straight to bed at afternoon cause i was exhaused and ate so much, i was fatigued on the daily more than a young person should be, i woke up feeling so fucking good and calm at around 3 am, slept like a goddamn baby and just felt different, this happened a few times, not just once, i contribute this to water and the caffeine video reminded me that i abuse caffeine, don't drink nowhere near enough water and my sleep is often compromised thank you guys, starting today i'm changing some shit, this time i have a lot of time on my hands since i don't work anymore so this will really help me to work on myself, i'm excited actually

So how much water do we need daily on average?
@CaseyThomasRD Жыл бұрын
Dang, I can't believe I didn't mention it in the conversation. My usual rule of thumb is: -Drink at least 1/2 your bodyweight in fluid oz. per day (Ex. 150 lb. individual would drink 75 oz. per day) -Note: This formula breaks down if someone is on the overweight/obese side and using estimated fat-free mass instead will yield a more practical number -Alternatively, a decent proxy can be to drink at least 2L per day for females and 3L per day for males (67/101 oz.)

@@CaseyThomasRD what should the spacing between bottles or glasses look like? I often find myself just drinking all of my water for the day at night.
@dodger3294 Жыл бұрын
@@CaseyThomasRD Is it better to space out the water throughout the day? Or is it the total daily consumption that's important? I tend to smash out 2L after a morning run and then drink very little for the rest of the day. 189cm 75kg. Loving the vids btw, lots of information I hadn't considered.

Your absorption efficiency is reduced if you chug it all in one go. Meaning you would need to drink more water to get the same hydration effect. Regardless, If I recommend something and it is impossible to adhere to, then it doesn't really matter. That being said, I typically find that it works best if you take sips on it throughout the day as you can both leverage the acute benefits of water drinking as well as see increased absorption ability. If you have the option, drinking after meals rather than before/during also helps with digestion (drinking water before/during can dilute your stomach acids a bit). One other aspect, that will become more problematic as you age, the more backloaded your water is (i.e., the later you drink your water), the more likely you are to impair your sleep as you may experience bladder discomfort in the night or have to wake up to use the restroom. For that reason, I typically recommend frontloading water and drinking throughout the day. The most high value times to drink water are: -First thing when you wake up -Before/during/after any stressing task (mental or physical) -Before bed, per tolerance Hope that all makes sense, let me know if you have any other questions! @@tr1e

@CaseyThomasRD Can you share analysis that you mentioned on how hard is it to become esports player. Would love to understand it.
@CaseyThomasRD Жыл бұрын
It wasn't very formal if I'm being honest, and I'm no statistician. I did this several years ago and I was looking at ratios of different populations at different skill levels. For example, I looked at how many professional baseball athletes vs. minor league vs. D1 vs. D2 vs. D3 vs. high school, etc. I did similarly for esports titles like League of Legends and the proportion of players pro and at different rank tiers. I tried to come up with an attrition line and weighted more heavily those who were pro vs. 1 step below pro (usually, those 1 step below pro are more likely to want to be pro, vs. someone on say a high school club team and playing for fun). I then pooled the data from the most popular traditional sports / esports titles and did a rough comparison between the two. There's probably (definitely) a better way to do this, if you could survey the entire esports/traditional sports population at some time point and ask if they have aspirations to go pro, and then track them over time to see if they actually did go pro. You'd have to then put some filter on the data for those who put in a 'serious' effort vs. not, or were in a legitimate position with the capability to go pro. vs. not. I don't think this study will ever be done. I made some assumptions with my data and used freely available information as a proxy. Anyone re-running this analysis may come up with a different competitiveness factor than me based on their assumptions, but I feel pretty confident that they will still reach the same conclusion that it's relatively more challenging to make it as a professional esports athlete than a professional traditional athlete. Hope that makes sense! Let me know if you have any other questions about it :)
@nik10gaming23 Жыл бұрын
Hey @@CaseyThomasRD , thanks for letting me know the methodology of the analysis. Actually that was the thing I was most interested in as this is very complex thing to do an analysis on. You are right we will need actual surveys and a good peer reviewed methodology to understand this. But personally do think you're correct when you said that. Thanks and take care. Also thanks for all the important info provided in the podcast.

Is there specific food or vitamins that affect performance? And how much of an impact does eating breakfast have? Also I love these type of podcasts with professionals.
@enraged1584 Жыл бұрын
All of them. It does help to think about all the vitamins, fluids and calories as fuels, oils, brake fluid, air filter, basically whatever you can think of for your engine. You can apply similar mechanisms or concepts from each to the other. There’s always an “edge” that you can gain from some obscure chemical, but the “gains” you get “performance wise” from deep diving on the basics and then building slowly from there. Really there isn’t much point FULLY optimising unless you have a goal in mind. But optimising the basics are basically necessary for at least living a full life. This looks different for everyone, and it’ll look different for you, but we all need engine oil, fuel, brake fluid and all the other stuff.
@enraged1584 Жыл бұрын
Once you have a goal in mind, can be literally anything, you can “optimise” further although it’s mostly diminishing returns after the “basics”

I guess you can user water enhancers like MIO, which is basically a flavoring tool for water. It should have the same hydration efficiency as normal water, I don't see why it wouldn't since it's not like a diuretic e.g. tea or coffee
