Good video. My Father passed away last year and he was a Hornby Dublo man through and through. Known affectionally to the local members of the HRCA (Hornby Railway Collectors' Association) as the 'doctor', he did more or less what you have shown but with all types of locos and scales, although Hornby Dublo was his passion. He had a magnetiser too - a big heavy lump of equipment and after he had his pacemaker fitted, I was always called upon to visit and press the button as he stood out of the room! Nice to see you got the 4MT running - great looking loco.

Yes, I was very nervous the first time I pressed the button. I am sure he did a proper job- unlike my amateur attempts. Thanks for sharing that story, glad it brought back some good memories.

Wow, Id love to have seen them in service! I don't think I would try that now though, apart from anything else I couldn't run fast enough. Anyway thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.

@@dustyshelfcollectables I spoke to the engine driver once and he said they were just as fast backwards as forwards so they didn't need to turn them at Tilbury Riverside there was a turntable and a turning triangle, standing next to one trackside and looking up as a 13 yr old they were massive !! at Tilbury there was often a 9F based there to haul the 14 coach ""windrush ""immigrant train to London climbed inside it one evening when the engine was cold and played with the controls we never got caught we were scamps!! hahaha

I love these old heavy Hornby Locos.... they have stood the test of time. I wonder if the new product will be running as strongly in 65 years time? Great video thank you. Brian

I don't think the new ones will be as durable, the old ones are amazing.

Great Job - very pleased you got it running despite it being 70 years old! Just goes to show how well built these models were during the 1950's. I have a 00 loco that has been in the loft stored in it's original packaging and in a suitcase and guess what? It ran straight away! I wonder if the current models costing hundreds of pounds will be running in 60 years time. I believe the Bluebell have three of these locomotives. Nice video Cheers Malcolm

I have two of those {80054} locos ...one is the original Hornby Dublo 3 rail {which I have owned ever since I can remember....I'm 73 yo BTW} ....unfortunately, it is rather "playworn". And the other is one I bought about 5 years ago from e-bay, which has previously been expertly converted to 2rail {00 guage} by a previous owner.. The latter is an excellent loco, and it has way more pulling power than most of my other {both Margate & China built} OO locomotives. A very interesting video, thanks for posting.

Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment, Indeed I love the old locos and I agree about the pulling power, but I wouldn't call play warn unfortunate, I see this as the loco wearing it history especially if you have owned it all those years . I have a few locos that run well but are battered and somehow they still look the part heading round the layout, and of course my first loco a 1979 ish Nellie. Anyway thanks again Matt

I had a sort of love affair with the "Standard Pugs" in my mid teens. By then my first love, the Gresley A3 Pacifics (Brown Jack, St Frusquin, Tranquil, Manna, Spearmint, Papryus and others) were all gone, and half a dozen standard 4 pugs, augmented by one or two of the substantially similar ex-LMS "Fairbairn" pugs represented the swansong of steam working in East Edinburgh where I lived. I cannot be certain, but I have a feeling that 80054 may have been one of them. Mainly they worked empty coaching stock between Craigentinny Carriage Sidings and the Waverley Station, plus a few passenger turns. I worked out a route to walk home from school, crossing the railway as many times as possible in the hope of catching a glimpse of one of these engines. I remember reading the dates on the works plates on these engines, and realizing that basically they were my contemporaries; they were no older than I was, yet I knew they would soon be going for scrap, and to me it felt wrong. Money was always tight for me, but around the time that Meccano Ltd. failed, I bought a second-hand Hornby Dublo standard tank, by placing a wanted ad in the Railway Modeller. Of course mine was a two-rail example, as I wanted to run it on my mainly Tri-ang layout. It came with the number 80033, which I think was a Southern engine, but I changed the number to 80113, which was one of the local engines. 80113 was a bit of a special engine to me; she was clearly now regularly working from St. Margaret's shed (64A) but she still carried 64G (Hawick) shed plates. I remember showing my model standard pug to the diver of a real one at the Waverley station. I don't know what he thought, but he could certainly see that the two engines were the same. The model 80113 became as much of a favourite of mine as the real one had been. She was simply the most reliable and dependable locomotive on my railway. Whatever we put behind her, she pulled it -- without any fuss. For years she worked both passenger and freight trains on my model railway, far outlasting the real engine. In her early days with me I took her to a friend's layout, and tried to see what she could do. Effortlessly she lifted fourteen bogie coaches out of Southallerton station, and up the 1 in 40 gradient out of the station. Never a hint of slipping! The train was longer than the gradient! I think it's one of the most impressive examples of locomotive performance I've ever seen! It used to take two of the real life standards pugs to bring 11 coaches from Craigentinny to the Waverley -- there was always a second pug banking in the rear. 80113 continued to work reliably for me until I had to dismantle the layout in 1982. In 2019 we sold the house, and I gave 80113 to the local model railway club along with the rest of my 00, O , and HO gage model railway stuff. When I last saw her there, on their club layout, she was still working -- after over 35 years in storage. As a ready-to-run proprietary model the club probably sold 80113 on rather than keeping her. Wherever she's gone, I hope she's got a good home. She deserves it. Seeing the undoubted affection I had for this engine makes me wonder if I let her go too easily. I don't think so. If I'd kept her she'd still be in store. I don't have the space for a 00 gauge model railway. Or, if I'm honest, the inclination to build one! Hopefully 80113 is on a model railway layout again. Pulling trains -- i.e. doing the job she was built for, and which she can clearly do to perfection. :)

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your story, It makes my day and the effort all worth while to hear memories are brought back. I can only imagine the excitement of seeing steam 'working' rather than in preservation, however I, akin to your story of walking home out of your way, I travel many miles to see locos fly past on the main line. As for your model loco, they were built to last and thankfully are now getting recognition for their robustness and nostalgic appeal. I still have my first loco (a Triang Nellie) on pride of display and a few others with sentimental value. Anyway, thanks again for watching and sharing, Matt.

I love them, there is just something about the way they run you don't get with the modern models, I guess nostalgia.

Around 14:30 in the video, the loco appears to go backwards when the controller is set to forwards. Was the magnet replaced the correct way round? I'm not an expert in 00 guage as when I grew up in the1950s, we never progressed beyond Hornby 0-guage clockwork sets. We ended up with a lot of these trains which were available quite cheap as others acquired electric sets. By the way, the BR Class 4 Tank has side tanks and the front two wheels are called a pony truck. Pannier tanks were a GWR speciality and over 800 of the 57XX 0-6-0 tanks were built as well as many hundreds of others with different size driving wheels. Nevertheless, it was an interesting video.

Hi Ian, not sure on the magnet, I will check. May be the wires on the controller, it fell during filming and I just loosely reconnected, may be round the wrong way. Thanks for the information on the Class 4, one of my aims is to learn more so feedback is great, as you probably guessed I am not expert. Any thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.
