The 390 Special was a great engine... They put in The Machine, the "Scrambler" and the AMX... you could purchase extra go-fast goodies from the AMC dealer just like going to Mopar dealers and picking up go-fast parts for your Mopar.... AMC was "getting with it" in the late 60s and early 70s. AMC dealers actually carried Doug Thorley full length headers for these cars along with mid rise cross ram intake manifolds and racing cams. The seventies were great.

S Kinfg, I run 91 octane premium pump gas. It could really use 93 but it is not available in Phoenix so I take it easy on hot days like it was when we shot the video. It is fine on 91 before the cyldiner heads get good and hot but will rattle at the 1100' above sea level in Phoenix in the summer months. My wife and I are fortunate to have another home in the mountains at 6000' above sea level and it runs great up there with out any rattle on 91 premium pump fuel

My first pursuit, which was in 1972 at age 16, involved a '71/'72 LAPD Matador squad car with the 401 engine. At some later point, I saw civilian Matadors of the same vintage that had the same 401 fender emblems. No special paint or markings; one was a light yellow 4-door like a police unit, but it had whitewalls and full wheelcovers. Dan or Lou or anybody, what was the deal with the non-police 401 Mats?

You could get a 401 in the Javelin through 74 and on the Matador, Jeep Grand Wagoneer and J10 pickup up to 76. Interestingly, International Harvester also offered a 2 bbl version of the 401 in both farm equipment as well as their big Travelall during those years as well. A really cool factory warranted 401 equipped car was the Randal dealership conversion where they replaced the Gremlin X 304 with a 401 and appropriately named it the Gremlin XR (the R stood for Randal). They made around 20 of them and convinced AMC to warranty the 401 engine installed at the dealership as if it had come from the factory with the bigger CID engine. A lot of drag racers with other brand cars were VERY surprised by the Gremlin XR's success at the race track

@@dancurtis3425 YOUR cars? Why, that's great. Of course, Lou always introduces his guests but I didn't recall. In the late '70s when I began driving, we all chose the usual pre-owned Firebirds, Camaros, Mustangs, etc. but my best friend showed up one day in great condition '74 Javelin. I'd never seen one and very much admired it. From him I learned a lot about AMC, going to shows in Kenosha. Now, at 61, I really like the first-gen Javelins previous to his and.....well, might soon be on the hunt for one. Thanks, Dan. You've got some great "Machines" quite literally!

John, AMC was bought by Chrysler in 1987 for the Jeep line after sales plummeted during the Renault partnership. They always seemed to be on step behind the market in the mid to late 70s and early 80s having mostly bigger gas guzzling cars when fuel prices rose and smaller economy cars when prices later dropped back down in the early 80s. By the time Chrysler bought out AMC there was only a couple of cars left other than the Jeep Line. The car that really killed AMC was the Pacer which was supposed to have the GM made Wankle based engine but ended up with the ill advised and under powers inline AMC 258 6 cylinder which barely fit under the hood in the smallish engine bay that was designed to have the GM Wankel rotary engine which never made it to market. AMC spent the vast majority of its engineering budget on the ill fated Pacer and never recovered from that heavy investment in a car that fell from grace due to poor fit and finish as well excessive warranty work on unanticipated mechanical failure from things like too small door hinges and leaky rack and pinion steering.
