Wait a second ... youre telling me a 4runner can off road like this without a shovel and axe, a rooftop tent, 500lbs of bumpers, LED light bars aiming in every direction and 5 cans of fuel hanging form every corner? Impossible! What kind of black magic fuckery is this!? .... :)
@jimerinrose62355 жыл бұрын
Nic Restrepo 😂 That’s funny! I’m definitely a minimalist when it comes to off-roading. These trucks perform so much better without all that extra weight. The only thing I keep in the back is recovery gear, tools, and a cooler.
@drsus05 жыл бұрын
Jim/Erin Rose i see so many more trucks upside down on trails now days now that everyone thinks roof top tents are so ...necessary ? It really is crazy how i used to maybe catch one truck a year that got a little on its side, almost never saw any totally go over, but now days its a regular occurrence and they always have like 400-500lbs of nonsense on the roof, starting with them roof tents. And these poor 4runners already suffer on power, then they add about 1000lbs worth of bumpers and tents, now it needs a downhill and a tailwind to get up to 75mph.. never mind performing on a trail.
@jimerinrose62355 жыл бұрын
Nic Restrepo Absolutely true!!!! A light rig with a low center of gravity makes all the difference in the world. Plus with my setup I can hit 115 on the highway!😂

Jim/Erin Rose and your tires are not wobbling you to death! So many 4runner owners that do all this crazy heavy “upgrades” on 4runner forums trying to figure out why they can’t keep their tires balanced 🤷🏽♂️
@jimerinrose62355 жыл бұрын
Nic Restrepo I did have that issue when the truck was new, but when you change to new tires there are some tricks. Tire manufacturers put a ink dot on the side of the tire. It’s usually red or blue. Line that dot up with the valve stem on the rim and your tire will balance a lot better. If you still are having issues you can do a road force balance. If a tire won’t balance right on the road force return it for one that will. I’ve found stock rims are made to a higher standard then most of the aftermarket ones, this will also cause issues with balancing. Make sure after off-roading to clean the entire backside of the rim. That will throw off a balance too. Tire pressure also comes into play. Each tire is different but on the highway 30-32lb is the sweat spot for my C load BFG’s. Having to much pressure will magnify any balance issues.

Insane! Well done again! I am just curious to know if going down the steep hills, did you ever need the downhill assist ? The suspension is brutally incredible ! So, you mostly had it on L4R ? No Crawl Control? You were moving pretty fast at times on those bumpy roads. Hence, this shows the true force of the off road 4 runner! The 285’s did help indeed but you have experience. Well done again! Proud to be a 4 Runner owner! 🥂
@jimerinrose62355 жыл бұрын
Thanks again for the nice comments! For me the crawl control/takes the fun out of it. I just used 4low/and kept it in first or second gear. Rear locker/Atrac when needed. It’s hard to tell in the video but the hills were way more steep and slippery than they looked. I usually go slow to be easy on the truck but you really needed momentum to make it up some of the hills. Going down I didn’t use Crawl Control/downhill assist either. Just put it in 1st gear, traction control off and pump the brakes, makes it way more exciting 😂
@alexpolidoro41265 жыл бұрын
@@jimerinrose6235 Awesome! If ever you write a book on this, I will be the first to buy it! Everything seems to be situational when having at disposal all those tools you can use with this type of machine. Hence, using the low gear ( S mode ?) kind of puts less strain on the engine and provides for better control. There was a time you seemed to be about to " TIP OVER" but the 4Runner held ground and I assume at that point in time, the rear locker /altrac was needed ? I guess the Crawl could be used in worst case scenarios whereby you really get stuck like in sand or mud and the wheels just keep spinning. Anyhow, you guys rock big time! Many cheers! Alex ;-)
@jimerinrose62355 жыл бұрын
Alex Polidoro Thanks! No book plans soon. Lol Yea these rigs have a ton of tools at your disposal. When climbing a uneven surface Atrac and the rear locker come into play. Rear locker allows both rear wheels to spin at the same rate so you don’t lose traction on one wheel if the other starts to spin. With Atrac the computer applies brakes to a spinning wheel so the opposite wheel can get power and traction. If the rear locker is on atrac is still working on the front two wheels. I like to use manual mode on the shifter so I can stay in the gear I want. 1st and 2nd is good for going up steep hills. Going down hill put it in 1st gear to keep the speed down. And apply the brakes as needed. You could also use crawl control/ hill descent. When it starts to tip going down hill the key is to have the wheels pointed in the direction it is tipping towards, that way you can just let off the brake and the rear will drop back down. Going up hill if it’s starts to tip just let off the gas, let it roll back a few feet and brake lightly.I’ve had lots of practice!😂
@alexpolidoro41265 жыл бұрын
@@jimerinrose6235 Thank you for taking the time to write. Much appreciated. These tips will help indeed. I will have to practice and get better at this. You are right regarding the 1st and 2nd gears. They come in handy when needed. I use it sometimes for sudden stops and you notice the vehicle reducing its speed much more quicker without even applying the breaks.Thanks for the great support! If there is no book on the landscape, maybe a 4 Runner Off-Road driving school may make us all happy campers! Cheers!!!

@jimerinrose62354 жыл бұрын
I do use the rear locker and ATRAC on really steep climbs. Otherwise just 4wd low. The locker really keeps the rear planted and Atrac helps with the front gain traction. I do think you could do it all with just atrac. Might need a little more momentum in some spots. I have not noticed a differenceeither way with the Snorkle other than it sounds really cool.

Türkgeldi Group Atrac allows the front diff to act like it has a locker. Applying brake to the wheel that is spinning so the power will go to the other wheel. It’s not as good as a front locker but it gets the job done.

Great video. A simple, quality lift plus some armor and you're making stuff look great that I'd never imagine doing in my 4R. Do you remember and mind sharing your thoughts on your specific OME setup? I'm dead set on OME shocks and front springs, but the rear springs start at "medium", and ARB says not to use them unloaded...
@jimerinrose62354 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Really Appreciate it. I do have the soft springs in the front and medium in the back. Absolutely love that set up. I tow a car trailer and a double jet ski trailer and the medium springs work awesome. I only notice the rear sitting a little higher when it’s totally empty. On trips when the back is loaded down with gear it’s level. The ride empty and loaded is perfect. Way better than stock. I think arb is referring to the front springs when they say don’t use medium unless you have extra weight. Like a steel bumper and winch. Medium Spring in the rear is perfect for stock.

Great content Jim and Erin, just subscribed after running through all the videos. Your videos have convinced me to go back to the 4runner, had one many years ago. Was looking at the rubicon recon edition or the TRD Off road premium. Really need the towing capacity of the 4runner for our small travel trailer but was not sure how capable the new ones were off road. As you have shown this baby rocks off road without a ton of added BS and it is much less expensive than that rubicon recon. Thanks and keep up the great work.

Anonymous Suomynona We’re still hear!😉👍 Last couple off-road trips were in Florida and repeats of other trips we filmed. Our big trip this summer is going to be in Colorado. We’ll probably plan some others on the east coast before then.

Jim/Erin Rose exactly what I was looking for! Great video nonetheless. Just found it today and now I’m more convinced about getting a 4Runner for the family. Thank y’all! And stay safe out there.

Hey jim, quick question do you under coat your 4runner yearly? (Anti rust) or every other year is fine? Thanks.
@jimerinrose62355 жыл бұрын
Anonymous Suomynona Never undercoated the 4Runner. I live in Florida so it doesn’t see road salt. It does see some salt from beach driving and launching our jet skis. When I bought the truck new I sprayed fluid film in/on the frame and spots that might rust. I wash the underside after every use and don’t really have any rust besides surface rust on the skids and sliders where the paint got scratched off. Once in a while I just rattle can those spots. I try my best to keep it in good shape.

Jim/Erin Rose lucky you jim! Here in canada during winter, salt everywhere! Thanks for the reply! Keep up the good work boss!♥️

Nothing I live in Quebec and the road salt they use here is brutal! I had a 2011 that I had rusrproofed every year using Krown and the underside looked almost new after five years. After totalling my 2011 I picked up a 2013 that had been rust proofed every year using Metropolitan rust proofing and the underside looked like hell!

Tim Brown I live in SW Ontario - Krown is the best undercoating in my opinion. Only way to go..

Nope, Just a little crazy!!! Watched your video's looks like you're right there with me!!! LOL We have similar hobbies I also Drag Race for fun. We run the Immokalee and Bradenton FL tracks over here on the west coast. Looks like you'll be needing a Snorkel on the Taco pretty soon!!!! After about the 20th time with water over the hood I figured my luck was out and it was due. LOL

It sucks that this version doesnt get full time 4wd, not even the TRD PRO gets it.
@jimerinrose62354 жыл бұрын
bob roger TRD off road and pro have identical 4wd systems if you want full time 4wd I get a Lexus GX, LX or Landcruiser. Unfortunately most of those don’t have rear lockers. Pick your poison. I’ve owned all the above vehicles. 40,80, and 100 series Land Cruiser. Lexus GX and LX 470. By far the 4Runner TRD platform is my favorite for off road trails.

Bro...2 things. 1 get some underbody skid plates before you rip something off. And get a "skidmark 4x4" skidplate which is super affordable but a lifesaver. Doing this kind of off-roading with zero underbody protection other than stock is tempting fate big time. And this is an TRD Off Road as well, an indication it is missing a number of skid plates most would consider a requirement. What are you doing when you inevitably get stuck Jim? I love to wheel as you do at roughly the same trail ratings (3 it looks like) so the questions are of genuine interest.
@jimerinrose62354 жыл бұрын
I have full RCI skids and RSG sliders I carry traction boards, yank straps and hand winch. 3 year and 85k miles off roading this truck all over the country never had a issue we couldn’t handle.
@JasonWh4 жыл бұрын
@@jimerinrose6235 well, how in the hell did I miss the underbody protection? RSG makes the best sliders IMO as well. I haven't used traction boards only MaxTrax. I thought they were just for snow. Shows what I know.
