Guys I have a Discovery 4 and you are making 2 crucial mistakes. 1: your tyre pressure should be no higher than 0.8 bar. 2: always turn DSC OFF, when driving in sand. Remember whenever you turn your vehicle off or you change the terrain response, DSC turns back on.3: when in sand always turn the terrain response to "Sand", the vehicle is a lot more responsive. 4: always use Low Range when towing in sand, that's what it's made for! I tow a Conqueror UEV 490/Commander through large soft dunes and don't get bogged down.

+Paul Chernotsky Disco driver responds: thanks mate, DSC was off and tyres run at 15psi (1.0 bar) for most of the crossing, for Big Red the tyres were dropped a bit further, no towing required for me and Sand was certainly chosen for Terrain response. Cheers.

+AllOffroad.com.au Hi, that's so strange that you were struggling so much. Maybe the pressure would have made that difference. My experience is that a little change in pressure makes a huge difference. How was the tread on the tyres? Also I have found that the DSC is very sneaky and as soon as you change something as the terrain response or turn the vehicle off it switches back on. DSC as I understand is also never "Always" off, it does turn itself on if it "Thinks" the car is loosing control. Anyway, that must have been hellova soft sand! Great video! Regards

as we discussed this in quite a few previous posts I won't repeat my position again, but in general I totally agree trailers should not be allowed trough the Simpson. If you watch our Simpson crossing from this year (without Trailer) you will see every second vehicle we came across towed from single to double axle and I can tell you our video is very considered in comparison what we witnessed this year.

Tires should be aired down to at least 5psi
@AlloffroadAu
@AlloffroadAu 9 жыл бұрын
+Rice Man that's a very general statement, tyre pressure depends on tyre type, tyre size, vehicle and terrain! 5 PSI is in most instances far to low unless you are bogged and need to self recover. With 5 PSI the chances to pop a bead and roll the tyre of the rime are huge and it is to low and not required for general sand driving. between 8 and 15 PSI is the recommended tyre pressure for sand driving

+Rahmi Acar - A question about snow tyres please. I live in the sub tropics, so snow is highly unlikely. None the less I was discussing tyres and snow driving recently with someone claiming to be knowledgeable on the subject and they stated that failure to put the right tyres on your vehicle could render you 'uninsured'. Then I wondered just how and when does a person decide it's the right time to put on snow tyres. For example is it something that gets announced on Norwegian TV?

Did the same trip in the late 70's in a 1969 land rover series 2a lwb fitted with a 161 Holden motor & fairy overdrive, we arrived in Birdsville only to find the petrol station was only open for 1 hour a day and we had just missed it by 20 minutes, had to stay in that same caravan park & it rained all night back then as well, i remember camping on a river at Windorah & having wild cats as big as dogs roaming through the camp at night, love your video's they bring back lots of memories, thanks for sharing.

The simmo was hardly a challenge for my 110 Defender when I did it in July15, we only made it to Popel corner as a Prado burned out his clutch, so it was a 127 km tow back to Birdsville, I ended up towing a prado that was towing a prado with a burned clutch. Also did a few recoveries on little red late in the afternoon.

Tyre pressure would have to be one of the keys to getting over these dunes, I noticed the white defender casually crawls over everything, though has the largest balloon in the tires. well done.

I've just crossed the Simpson (late May 2022) and no wonder the tracks up some dunes are in poor shape with that much wheel spin and vehicles bouncing their way up. With low enough tyre pressure, I could crawl up any dune without any wheel spin or excessive bouncing.

Been over the Simo 10 times with a LC200 with a Ultimate camper and had no issues. Power and tyre pressures all right and some common sense ,uhf and sandflag and spares snatch strap. They should ban the people who cant drive and dont carry the right gear. as for the dunes every wet season when the wind blows the sand dunes fix themselves.

Hi Stefan.Firstly, I made a mistake! I did not read your whole message before responding (I did not "click" for the balance of the message) - for that I apologise!It seems that in many areas we are very much alike in our thoughts.What I am railing about is ignorant and, in many instances, lazy drivers who do not want to bother with the most basiic fundamentals of four wheel driving.The video that you have posted shows, in my opinion, very poor 4wd techniques and is something that people wanting to do these "adventure" trips, should not be watching. In my mind it encourages bad habits which cause many problems, not just for those shown trying to get through the sand but for those following. You area a driver trainer & an expert in four wheel driving,why then show a video like this without detailing the problems these people are expetiencing?I respect that this trip was not your "show", but once again, with a video so full of flaws why put it up in your name?You said earlier that I should lighten up. Well, let me tell you, after spending days behind other groups on the Canning & the Simpson, suffering the hardship on our vehicles because those ahead have f----d the track through their ignorance, it is difficult to lighten up!Sure, weather, over time, tends to solve the track problems. What about the vehicles travelling behind your group, after you have just cut up and destroyed the track? They have to risk damage to their vehicles because of the inconsiderate idiots travelling ahead.I have had extensive 4wd experience & I have to tell you, your vehicle was the only vehicle aired down properly & driven correctly. The rest were at 30psi or above (maybe on reflection one may have been at 25 plus). As I said before. Watch closely, listen carefully, and you will see the tyres break traction far too early for lower pressures. This sort of observation comes from spending a lifetime in 4wd vehicles & observing & instructing others.I have viewed many of your other videos & they are good.I say again, but a little stronger, why put your name to this crap?You will no doubt be pleased that this will be my last comment on this.Regards.

Hi Tony, I also get annoyed if people do the wrong thing, especially after my West-East Crossing this year were every second vehicle towed, from single to a double axle and even a caravan. The French line was wombat hole after wombat hole on nearly every Dune, it was no pleasure to drive. However, in my opinion, you over dramatise what's happening on our trip; Of the 1100 Dunes, our guy's struggled on maybe 6 to 8 of them. The conditions were reasonably tough at the time and you needed to be spot on with Tyre Pressure and Driving Style. As I said before, no vehicle had a tyre pressure above 20 PSI (warm) period. I agree most could have gone down at least another 5-10 PSI. It's always easy and tempting to comment from home, but the fact is you were not there with us and did not see conditions. We spent sometimes waiting for well over an hour for groups before us to clear some of the dunes where they sunk their cars in up to the sill. Our guy's got stuck on the same chopped up Dunes in the same holes. So trust me in the bigger picture the trucks in our group who struggled on some 6 to 8 Dunes did not cut the track up more than many of the vehicles before us (some of them you see on my video). I probably could have pointed out more why the other trucks struggled and made it clearer how important tyre pressure is but as you will understand I have to walk a fine line as I don't want to offend my travel companions whose trip I joined even though I see and do some things quite differently. I believe people who like to make such a crossing and see my video want to emulate the truck which did everything fairly easily and not the trucks who got stuck. But let's leave it like this and know that overall we seem to have the same approach and view.

This video is a disgrace! Single 4wd vehicles badly driven and with too high tyre pressures do just as much damage as trailers.I too hate seeing trailers taken on these tracks because of the damage they do - but look at the damage your fellow travellers did in both single vehicles and those towing trailers!From what I can see in this video, your 110 was the only vehicle to have tyres below 20psi - the others looked like they all had 30psi plus! To support my statement just watch how the tyres unload & start spinning before there is any real load on them!Tyre pressure is critical in trying to maintain our tracks for everyone.I own a 110 & have had extensive experience in a Discovery. Normally, in the conditions shown, the Disco should be as good as, or, better than the Defender. The Disco'performance in your video is pathetic compared to your vehicle. Why? Poor driving does not account for much of it, because of the Disco's set up &suspension this vehicle nomally puts most other 4wd's to shame!No, sorry - after watching it a few times I can only say the video is something you should be ashamed of - particularly as you claim to teach off road driving.Sorry to be so blunt, but it really is disgracefull & a very poor example to people wanting to get into this type of adventure!

Hi Tony, you are a quick, harsh judge and probably perfect in whatever you do I'm sorry that we did not match your expectations. Desert sand conditions can't be judged by watching a video! They frequently change depending on several environmental factors, unless you were there on the day you don't really know! I do agree with you though on quite a few points, a single vehicle with an inexperienced driver an incorrectly set up vehicle will indeed do more damage than a vehicle with a trailer correctly driven. If you combine an inexperience driver with a trailer you don't have a good combination. Yes, most vehicles in the group had to high tyre pressure (however everyone was below 19PSI) my tyre pressure was around 13psi for most of the crossing and below 10 for Big Red Yes, I'm a driver trainer, so that puts me in control of a group of 4 other people on a trip I joined in on late notice? This was NOT my trip, nor a training exercise I conducted. I made several suggestions in regards to tyre pressure as early as the Flinders and while we had great people in the group, some have very strong personalities, which don't like to take advice. It was the first desert trip for 4 of the 5 drivers so there was also a learning curve involved. Yes, the Discovery 4 is a very capable truck, I owned a D3 and have taken it places most people would not take a Discovery. In my opinion, probably the most capable stock 4wd you can drive off a showroom floor. Mark also had the highest tyre pressure and I totally agree that because of it, he struggled more than he should have. However a Discovery 4 with 31" tyres and 18" wheels will not match a Defender on 35" on 16" wheels. Properly aired down, the Defender's footprint on 35" is much, much bigger then the D4 could ever reach with that Tyre size and wheels. However, I think you exaggerating calling it a disgrace it just a video documenting what happened on the trip, no one was endangered, there was no reckless driving, no deliberate damage to anything. We took all of our rubbish + other people's rubbish back out, and all recoveries were conducted in a safe manner. In comparison to most other terrain Dunes together with the wind self-repair after a while.... So Tony just lighten up and don't watch it repeatedly if it offends you so much....

I did Fraser Island in 2000' in a defender 130. There were 8 of us in the defender with all our gear. On the way across the captain of the ferry warned the conditions that year were some of the worst in 10 years due to little rain and extremely soft sand. We were a bit apprehensive but there was no need to be. The defender was literally unstoppable. At Indian head we literally drove around 3 bogged landcruisers - just an amazing sand vehicle, and I’m a Toyota man. Crossings like the Simpson can be very frustrating if the rig isn’t set up properly, the white defender just walked it like a stroll in the park - well done. I did the Canning Stock Route in 2006 in a modified BJ42 shorty cruiser set up for serious long distance touring - it was running the 400ci 6.5 litre V8 intercooled Turbo Diesel and was an absolute pleasure on that trip, no stress at all and walked over everything. Unfortunately I didn’t get to do the Simmo with her but am glad to have done the CSR and round oz in her. Great video, thanks for posting, really enjoyable to watch👌👌

It all comes down to practice and knowledge handed down by our friends or relatives. I was born and raised in the Simpson Desert. I could drive over these dunes as soon as i could reach the pedals thanks to my parents knowledge who spent almost their whole lives in the Simpson Desert. We can't expect people who haven't grown up in a similar environment to be instant dunes kings. The only way to learn is give it a go. I say good on em for taking a shot at it. I think it took courage to publish their attempts also. They could easily have edited out sections but they chose not to and good on em for keeping it real. Don't forget we are talking 1100 or so dunes.

Also if people refuse to listen to good suggestions and advice what can be done? I can remember as a young boy the Army came to our place in the Simpson Desert. They came with 6 Land Rovers. The road in was semi sealed so no problems there. But none of the Land Rovers could make it over the first dune! My father attempted to explain to them about tyre pressures but to no avail. They pulled out their army book which states that in the desert never go below 38psi if i remember correctly. 38 psi? Are they nuts i thought? I was about 12 at the time. Eventually after about 2 hrs of fruitless attempts and digging and wrecking our track they had to listen and dropped pressures to 12psi and they all flew over with no problems. It just goes to show no matter the vehicle knowledge is the key.

+James Hart no we did not have maxx track and two vehicles had winches, however maxtraxx would not help that much with the trailers and on the steep hills, you have to have the throttle control, momentum, throttle control and Tyre pressure are the 3 important points and it was clear that the trucks with trailers would need a couple of goes on some of the steeper dunes. No one ever gut stuck, they always could reveres out they just got stopped in their progress...

Thanks for sharing that video, really enjoyed it. We crossed the Simpson last year (September 2015) a little bit late I know, a bit hot, we did it in a 4 cyl 2001 Hilux and a 2003 V6 Challenger. We found the magic gear was high range first gear and the tyres down to 20 pounds, had no trouble at all once we found that combination. Looking at your vehicles I'd say we weren't carrying as much weight and that would make a big difference. Love the Simmo....can't wait to get out there again. Thanks again, I reckon you had bloody good team.

Hi. No, I do not think quick but yes probably a bit harsh because the other people in your trip probably did not know better.I am the first to admit to making mistakes and when I do so will readily own up & accept the cosequences.I am the first to agree that dunes change on an hour by hour basis. What you crossed easily in the morning may be almost impossible later in the day - it depends on temperature, moisture, sand dnsity etc etc.As I said in my first post, I own a 2005 Defender 110 & use it extensively in hard sand conditions. I can tell you mine performs as well as yours did in the video - many people have asked at times - wow! How did you do that?Simple! It is mainly tyre pressures, then understandig your vehicle and then finally driving correctly.I have also come across people hopelessly stuck in sad & exricated them very quckly to their utter amazement - why? Because they did not understand, or know how important tyre pressures are.Now, let me ask you the quesion - why did your vehicle so outperform the others? Maybe a little better driving but simply too high pressures on th other vehicle's! Just look at the video - watch very closely & listen to the sound of the motor. Simply they were running with too high pressure! You will see the tyres have too little footprint & broke traction as soon as revs were increased.I have travelled just about all of the great tracks plus more. The sad fact is that the tracks are being destroyed by people who do not know how to 4wd or, are lazy & will not do the right thing. So much so I believe it will not be long before restrictions are played on some of these fantadtic adventures.This is why I am harsh about your video - only one vehicle seems to be driven correctly. Sadly, it (the video) gives people entirely the wrong idea in showing how to drive on these adventure trips.I have deliberately stuck to tyre pressures and driving in my comments. I have ignored 3 or 4 other blatantly wrong 4wd practices shown!

So once more NOT MY TRIP!!!! It was a private trip from Gunny in the cruiser and Mark in the 130. I joined it as a participant and filmed my first Desert crossing. I established already in the video that some vehicles had higher pressure than I had, nothing I can do about it besides making suggestions, they are all adults and do what they please and think it's right. Nothing horrendous happened, a couple of people with less experience did it differently than I have done it or you would do it, that’s life mate. Maybe post a couple of your videos seems like we can all learn from it a lot.

I'm curious about why the Land Rover Discovery appears to need more momentum than the Defenders. Is it lack of lockers or something else?
@AlloffroadAu
@AlloffroadAu 8 жыл бұрын
+Bill Blinky different traction aid, different gearing, different tyres and size, lockers are no factor as I had no locker engaged except on big red pretty much drove most in 1st and 2nd high range

Thanks for the detail mate. Very much appreciated. I far prefer the 'softly, softly' method of your Defender, and of course the result it's achieving too.

Did they have the dynamic stability control turned off each time?

Stability Control is turned off in the Discovery when selecting Sand Mode, the defenders don't have Stability control

We & another couple did the Madigan Line last year one Nissan 4.2 Patrol towing a Tvan & they in a Tojo 100 series towing a Tvan & only got stuck once . Your vehicles having multiple goes at the dunes just goes to show that your tyre pressures are way to high. & you blame towing, bull the single vehicles where chopping the crap out of the dunes. We had this problem of the dunes being cut to crap from a 4x4 club from the east coast going before us & bragging when in Birdsville about doing 7 runs to conquer one dune. Our tyres where down to 9ib front & 14lb rear & 12 lb Tvan. You could walk over the dunes in 2nd low . One day we did 36klms in 6 hrs. People take on more than they can handle properly & don`t have the time frame right.

I didn’t get stuck once, went out of HighRange once and certainly did not chop up the Dunes. I did Simpson this year again after the Big Bash and never seen Simpson that chopped up every second car was towing single axle, double axel and even caravan attempted, you can't tell me that it has nothing to do with that many people towing and many don't have a clue. I agree there were also plenty of single vehicles who did as much damage now imagine they have a trailer on the back on top of that. You may be one of the few who does it well, many don't so in my eyes there are a contributing factor.
