Five Rocks is awesome. We used to drive all over the big white sand dune and then also the Orange Bowl. Way back in the day. The Gladstone 4wd club camped at Five Rocks one Christmas about 40 years ago and it dumped down with rain. 25 inches overnight. The sand dunes slumped down on them and the kids were floating around on their air beds inside their tents. The big swamp came up and they had to evacuate through many kilometres of metre deep water. Fun times.

Watching some old videos... I'm a local in Rockhampton and frequent 5 rocks... and I can promise you the track you got stuck on coming off of "9 mile beach" was not at all the exit from 9 mile... it was the entry/exit to Three rivers beach... which is the beach you were shown driving onto afterwards to see the "5 rocks"... makes me doubt the editing of alotnof the videos I've seen

@idahodoug16186 жыл бұрын
Wow, great that Shaun's switched to an 80. Great rig. Comment on Barney sawing the steering wheel back and forth in the soft sand - I'm not sure that's a good idea. In mud and ruts it can help the sidewalls exert pressure and increase total tire grip, but I don't think you are achieving that in sand next to the tire. That sand has no resistance when pressed against. Better not to give away momentum going side to side and keep the contact patches pulling straight ahead vs back and forth, I think. Anyone else?

@swampy 420 to be fair with trails having bigger tires isnt always better. All the trails in my area have ruts from 35"+ tires in em so theyre unusable unless you get some too. No big tires, no big ruts hopefully right? Fyi im in canada not aus idk if its much different there
@gaj57016 жыл бұрын
Bigger tyres are detrimental to every single component from your wheel nuts to steering wheel & brake pedal. That's basically your primary safety systems outside of manufacturers spec so they're not allowed without engineering approval above a certain limit for safety reasons, not environmental ones. All the vehicles pulled were outside of these commonly known regulations so were simply running the risk & got caught. If anyone wants to say their vehicle brakes work better with bigger tyres & can prove it scientifically, as an automotive design engineer, I'll nominate you to the Nobel committee for science as you'll win the award with a landslide vote for redefining the laws of physics as we currently know them on planet earth 👍 I do wonder how many wifes/partners of bigger is better heroes would be happy taking their kids out in a vehicle if they were made fully aware that it's illegal, uninsured & potentially unsafe..
@Darndiddlyarn6 жыл бұрын
@@gaj5701 my brother drives a stock terrano, it's way less stable than my slightly lifted slightly larger wheeled rodeo to the point I'd never let my wife drive a terrano, they should be illegal period. And if they're that worried about brakes then every toyota should be illegal.
@gaj57016 жыл бұрын
@@Darndiddlyarn To give an idea on where the safety gets pulled into question, one of the tests we used to do for vehicle Type Approval (equivalent to ADR, TUV, FMVSS etc.) was a depleted vacuum brake test where we would measure the braking efficiency in a static roller for a specified brake pedal pressure. We'd stop the engine & deplete the vacuum by pressing the brake pedal until it went hard. Then we'd attach a pressure meter to the pedal & measure the efficiency at 50Nm. Most vehicles only just passed this test with the standard size tyres on so as soon as you increase the diameter by very little you would likely be outside of the required spec on any vehicle. Then if you also lift the vehicle you find that the load sensing/proportioning valve won't be working in its specified range, even if you fit an adapter plate, further decreasing your braking performance (I've actually no idea how airbags are even allowed to be sold for vehicles as they effectively remove your brakes load sensing valve when people 'level' their vehicles at fully loaded, just when you need it to be working correctly. But that's a different point). From an engineering point of view, you wouldn't advocate any tyre size increase or suspension lift from standard as every mm can make a difference so having a limit where we can effectively self certify a 50mm suspension & 50mm tyre diameter increase is actually pretty good & that's what I run. As for how vehicles behave on road, they're all different, but all have to be designed to be 'safe' according to the standards.
