While I like the idea of the battery switch, I don't like those switches personally. I prefer something like the Blue Sea 7622 ML-Series. It will automatically reconnect the batteries once the starting bat is "full" but also allows you to manually connect the batteries for self jumping, plus has the option for a remote switch so you can mount the unit where it best fits and still have control of it. I cannot wait to see the wiring job they did!

I think after seeing the 'truck' in a number of videos I have finally come to the conclusion that it is ugly. Now that is not a bad thing for a 4x4, it is ugly in a very good way. I really don't like the modern trend to try and make 4x4s look 'sporty'. A 4x4 SHOULD be big, angular and ugly. Let's face it, they are not sports cars, they should be functional and being functional involves being boxy with sharp edges. I guess the only thing that would really worry me about the build is all the complex electronics. They are beautiful and convenient but if one essential module fails (and electronics always pick the worst time to do that) it could be a bit of a pain. This build certainly isn't done on the KISS principle.

Hi Andrew, the solar setup interested me in this video. It appears one set of PVs is going to the manager 30, where as the other PV blanket is going to a separate BCDC25. If that is the case, my understanding is that the two chargers won't work together as one charger may be in bulk whilst the other is in float. I tried a similar setup with two regulators on the same battery and one of the chargers current would always drop off as the battery neared %75 -%80 SoC. Is there some level of data communication between the manager 30 and the BCDC? Great content as usual. Cheers.
@danielfreney89104 жыл бұрын
This was also my understanding
@blingscreensavers38814 жыл бұрын
Lifepo4 is basically bulk charge lithium will take as much charge as they both give. Both being redarc the profiles are exactly the same and I think the manager 30 has parallel charge
@Sethjxl4 жыл бұрын
@@blingscreensavers3881 True they both have the same charging profile. Part of each stage of the charge profile is to charge at the optimal voltage for that SoC then stop and sense voltage fluctuations. The slower the fluctuation, the higher its SoC. What i think has happened in my experiments is that during the sense phase of the charge stage, one charger does not see a drop in voltage as the other is still in a charging state. Thus one of the chargers wins or they both go to the absorption state too early. To fix this, the chargers need to have some kind of data link, which i don't think they have. I posed this question to Victron for help with running two different solar regulators into the same bank, the answer was simply no, you just need a bigger regulator and have it control the lot. Edit: Not sure if i have interpreted wrong, but most of the BMS for liFeP04 on the market will take a max of about 50A charge, there are some that are higher but most are around 50A.
@The_Opinion_of_Matt4 жыл бұрын
Several people have commented about the complexity because of the electronics. Electrics mainly fail for a few reasons: low quality parts, poor installation, and heat. A well designed system that is put together well will have few problems. I can tell by the how this is installed that it is unlikely to fail and if it does it will be easy to troubleshoot by anyone with any knowledge of electrics. The most complex part of this would be the RedArc manager 30 and those have such a good reputation (not a low quality part) that I would no be worried about it. Sure manufacturing defects occur, but manufacturing defects will usually show up within 30-60 days and with electronics manufacturing defects will usually show up within the first few times they are powered up, if not the first time. Software is a different issue and can showup seemingly randomly. Sometimes cycling the power (turning it off the back on) will reset the system and get the software going again. Sometimes it won't. Sometimes you may need to turn it off for 10, 20, 30 or 60 minutes to give the electronics time to fully power down because there may be capacitors that are still holding a charge. However, some capacitors can hold a charge for very long times, like months. With a new build, plan ahead and do a weekend shakedown run at least 30-60 days prior to a long trip. The shakedown run is to find any major problems and the 30-60 days is to allow time for parts and repair. If the electrics seem too complex to fix that is on you. We have the internet today. Educate yourself and take the knowledge out on the trail with you.

Two half serious suggestions: firstly get a Flir add-on infrared imaging camera for your smartphone; not grossly expensive and great for routinely looking for signs of loosening of connections or any concerning hotspots in the electronics, as well as for monitoring the possible low rpm overheating alternator syndrome with LiFePo4 charging. Secondly, put a remote indicating smoke alarm in the electrical plant room. Yes to the KISS battery selector switch, don't use it with the engine running as contacts will 'break before make' momentarily stressing your alternator diodes and check out CCA limits on your Lithium batteries if interconnecting batteries at the time of starter use if they can be connected in parallel ( Or maybe here you only feed the accommodation battery via the charge controller ?). Debate item now, recalling the reverse flow intercooler- do we need tempest protection / full Faraday cage for all this electronics in case of a lightning strike on the PV roof - should we all be installing lightning conductors or at least transient clamp earthing of the PV positive ? Tongue in cheek until you are on an open plain and driving the tallest item for miles....

So Andrew, if you lose the alternator and the ability to charge the vehicle battery, have you considered a feedback loop to allow you to plug those 400 Amps of stored power back into the vehicles operating system? With no alternator your vehicle will eventually draw down the crank battery (and auxiliary) until you are dead in the water, probably only after several hours of running, even less of operating lights etc. With the additional power flowing back, you could continue to drive for a considerable time then wait and charge the batteries using solar to continue on again. A useful level of redundancy that I've employed in my 79 series build. A necessity for the very remote outback stuff. Cheers Mick

With regards to the 220-240 volt installation, I'm not really certain if it's a little different from state to state. The canopy installation is more akin to a caravan installation rather than a static home installation and subject to different requirements and being a plug in device it is actually regarded as an appliance under the Australian Standards, so not really certain what type of compliance certificate is required, certainly won't be the standard building one but a caravan one if it's a requirement. In which case I hope flexible multi-strand cabling was used to combat vibrations along with double pole switching for all you power points and lights etc.... It's kinda funny seeing trunking being used to hide/protect the cables but I suppose if it's used in locomotives where it's subjected to vigorous vibrations and the like, it will perform well in that environment too. I am currently doing a similar setup with a canopy and camp king industries roof top tent as two separate pieces. I don't think I really want to install 240 volt into it though, but am still undecided whether to go for 12v or 24v solar system for the fridge. Really look forward to seeing more of the build.

Andrew shows passion for his build, but I don't really understand "getting away from it all" and literally replicating a domestic home with kettles, induction cookers etc on a trip. I was hoping to see some innovation, some out of the box thinking in a build. But this is just a celebration of consumerism, the joy of opening the cellophane on a new mass produced item. Getting back to basics has its rewards, doing more with less likewise has merit. Andrews build may well suit his needs down to the ground, and that's a good thing. But I hope people don't move toward thinking this is the path to enjoying a trip.
@jasonhowe16974 жыл бұрын
Note andrew you will need to check each device you wattage calc if intend to run a lot of things at once you will need a larger battery system in place.. if you are going to add shore power into the use parameter you will need a fused inlet.. I don't think you are going to have enough dc power to power your VAC components .. you are looking at 4.5-8K allowing a power draw of 1,500 watts per device you use.. If you are going to plug this into mains power andrew you will have to comply with the same diagrams that apply to caravans and campers and install a mains inlet fuse.. without one if something fails electrically it would be hard pressed to get insurance to cover any damages.. that happen. do what you like though if considering any type of secondary power options including shore power at caravan parks or genset applications minimum inlet specification is 240 VAC at around 20 amps Just remember this Andrew whilst you might be able electrically isolate at charging state doesn't mean all the batteries you use are electrically isolated in a use parameter case.. if on the same circuit you will likely find all batteries with interact with each other..
