This engine is hard to kill. I beat mine to 1,227,000 miles and sold it for 800 bucks barely running. I finally moved on to cummins. I miss the magnums, but the cummins has been insane. By beat I mean I red lined it every red light in its entire life.

@@N-wordScissorhands As long as you keep up with the maintenance these engines are good. Everyone one that's had an issue usually dont change the oil or keep up with the maintenance. The trans, if it starts to slip learn to column shift. it will last indefinitely if you column shift it. The auto part of the trans is garbage. if you get the low oil light at the traffic lights touch the throttle a little. Don't let the oil light stay on. Mine did that for the last 400k miles. I know why it did it, it was tired.

Another option is to have your stock core reground and using a 200,000+ mile lifters is fine if they are still in nice shape and you can take them apart and clean them. having your cam reground from Oregon cam is only $160 so that is another option for a cam and that is my go to for Smallblock roller cams I keep La and Mag roller cores for these reasons.

Great video guys, its awesome how you both are not only letting people know the cost of the parts but what parts to properly install on there trucks if they want to go that route. @@RacingRamFam still waiting on the map sensor and connection to be delivered. I got the battery relocate done and the gauges. Got the new fuel bump in to be installed and the exhaust is almost set. Should have a video up by sunday.

Good luck finding a performance roller cam right now. I just finished a 5.9 magnum build and had to retrofit to a flat tappet just to find parts. Jeg's, Autoplicity, Summit, Comp, Lunati.......the list goes on. NOBODY had one. Love the video though, bad ass truck!!

5.2 cam is actually bigger than the 360s . I put a 5.2 cam in my 360 and it changed the fuel curve. But problem solved with the Syked tuner.

btw, the 5.2 cam is bigger than the 5.9 cam. the stock 5.9 cam is the same lift cam used in the mid to late 80s smoggo 360s.

Great Content. Were the cam bearings good on those motors? I have pulled three magnum cams and all three had cam bearing problems on 3 or 4. In the process now of doing a 408 with a Kenne Bell supercharger. I have a few cam choices laying around but wasn't sure which would be the best with boost.

Mine look great with 200,000 miles! Any cane is a boost cam! Usually supercharger cams they try to make a lot of low end torque to spin the supercharger easier

My cam bearings were toast when I went to do a cam swap, Motor had 130k on it. Budget went out the window at that point.

Great video guys. I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 automatic that has over 200,000 miles and it is my only truck, a work truck. A friend has an old dual plenum intake that he says would help with the pulling power (I pull a 6000 pound work trailer) but not sure if that alone would help or if I would need more added to it. The truck struggles to pull the trailer up overpasses but it is my only truck and I don't need it to be super fast, just pull the trailer better so I guess some more horsepower. What do you guys recommend? Thank you.

Dual plane won’t give you as much torque as the stock kegger. And go with a tune it really wakes these trucks up

I wanna see you guys put a .600 lift hyd roller cam in a 5.9. I have a custom Howard hyd roller in my 5.9 and it’s massive. I do believe I have the hardest thumping 5.9 out there but I could be wrong.

The factory 5.2 cam is a nice cam for the 5.9, the 5.2 cam is 432 lift intake and 432 lift exhaust, which is a better cam than what comes in the 5.9

@@RacingRamFam that is what came stock in my 5.9 from the factory with the Mopar performance PCM and that along with the Hughes FI Air Gap intake and my truck hauled ass, now I’m building the motor as a 408 Stroker with a much beefier cam

Yea. Both stock cams are lumps on a log. Better cams are $$$ Re-use lifters. BUT, stocks springs are shit and machining to use better springs , costs but necessary. Drop the stock MPi. Carb. And run old school dizzy ignition. - been there. Done that. - good for you. Good luck. - what is your 1/4 mile time. ?

Hey do you guys run a stock bottom end? I just picked up a 2000 Dakota RT and I have a D1 procharger head unit I was gonna put on the 5.9 just wanted to know what you guys do to prep them for boost. Not looking to spend a crazy amount on this.

Matters the size cam. But factory tunes trash would go with a tune over cam swap to start with

Part Numbers: Cam: Hughes SER1418ALN-10 Lifters (x16): Sealed Power HT-2269 Timing Chain: Hughes 6442 Head Gaskets (x2): Cometic C5554-027 Gaskets: Not shown, can use Fel-Pro 260-1723 if upgraded head gaskets not needed Pushrods (x16): Not shown, can use Melling MPR-462 Valve Springs(x16): Mopar 312-P4876062 Plenum gasket: Weld, use Hughes kit, or use included gasket in felpro kit Also in video was heads, thermostat, valve covers, tune. I think it was forgotten, but for the cam listed you're supposed to use new Hughes retainers/locks/cam bolt. It's all listed on their site. If you want just a cam swap: Hughes Cam, Cam Bolt, Cam Key, Spring/Lock/Retainer Set, & 16 Lifters the current price is $960, not including any of the other parts listed like gaskets, pushrods, heads, tune, etc

Also if your block is trashed like mine probably is with 280k miles(I'll be doing this swap in a month) you can get a stroker block from ATK for $3000, which includes a $2000 crank set, so you're only paying $1000 for a "new" block and all the machine work. Pretty good deal IMO

Nice parts/price layout 🤘. I just bought a 98 rcsb v6 5 speed with a dead cylinder for $1200 and drove it home lol (and to work a few times) im going to junk yard 5.2 swap it in the next month or 2 and while the engine is on a stand, i plan to do gaskets, timing chain, hughes plenum fix, etc so itll be reliable. I just might throw one of those hughes cam/springs/pushrod combos in there while im at it..🤔. The v6 is pretty much dead and smokes like a freight train lol but, the truck was so clean and isca manual so i just couldnt pass up a good deal. They are so easy to Magnum swap, there is no way id put another 3.9 in it 🤮

For 3k you can make it quick yourself.Im in Abbeville SC and have been a ASE certified tech for 30+ years.I can get you 300hp at the crank without a cam change. First you gotta let these things breathe.The keg manifold can be easily modified and will really wake it up above 3000., with little loss of bottom end power. Just this mod is a definite seat of the pants improvement..Next I fashioned a cold air induction retaining the factory box with a K&N panel filter. I relocated the IAT to the airbox. This tricks the PCM into running a little richer. The thermostat is changed to 180°. The coilis an Accel unit relocated to the firewall to run cooler and shorten the coil wire.I use Accel brass cap and rotor..An MSD 6A fires E3 sparkplugs thru Accel 8mm wires. Stainless steel shorty headers and true 2.5 duals eliminating the y pipe into a dual inlet/outlet Flowmaster 40 series..The muffler configuration is needed because pipes must be run down passenger side and split over the axles. The rear is stock with 3:55 LSD..An electric fan from a 95 V6 Mustang keeps it cool in southern summers.The fan was probably the second best mod for power. Other small mods are polishing the throttle body and trimming the bracket that hangs over the bores. This has resulted in a 5.2 Dakota that embarrasses 5.9 RTs.. I imagine I have the quickest 318 in the county 😁. I plan to replace the heads as they are crackers and tho they don't leak, I'm sure with my hard running, they probably are crackers. Thinner 1028 Mr Gasket .028 head gaskets are going in along with a small Hughes cam. These things have huge potential. They come with 1.92 intake valves and 1.6 exhaust. So the breathing potential is there. Also the rod / stroke ratio is perfect on these motors and they have long forged rods that reduce cylinder bore loading for good long wear.

If you get a cam with any chip your going to need a tune cause it won’t idle with factory tune

I would do a tuner before a cam. Stock tune is the softest thing ever lol watch my video how to tune a twin turbo beast on the channel. You will see how trash the factory tune is for power

I got a superchips tunner for $75 but it's limited on what I can do. I want a sct eventually. Just kinda my poor boy project truck / daily driver so I'm trying to keep it semi dependable while getting around 400 hp (or more) eventually.

@@RacingRamFam My idea for pumping engine oil is very good, and most importantly it works!!! - my Magnum 318 loved it:-) Think about how modern Japanese cars with automatic transmission work! After all, now all these cars are on the "start-stop" system (Sorry, I don't know how it sounds in English LOL). But the point is when the ECU of a modern Japanese car "understands" that the car is in traffic and you need to stop the engine. :-))) How will the hydraulic automatic transmission system work after that to move the car?)))) For this reason, the Japanese came up with 12V. oil pumps for automatic transmission:-)))))) My thought is, what do you say?

But this is a simple scheme: friend, you need to look into the electrical circuit of the ignition switch and connect the 12V relay. control the opening of the +12V control. At the same time, the logic will be interesting, if you have an electric oil pump from a Japanese automatic transmission that does not create pressure in the engine lubrication system, then you will not be able to start the engine at all! As you saw in my video, the original oil pressure indicator is installed and it allows you to understand what pressure is in the system, and you can always stop the engine as usual in manual mode;-)

As a dealership tech for nearly 20 years (9 of them with Mopar) I'm in your shoes. I have so much crap. And even then, I never pay retail for anything. Lol. I want to see details on the SCT tuning. But make the SRT-10 video, a lot of people will like it.

Flat tappets don’t last. And if you don’t get spring tension just right it will eat the cam alive or be too soft.

@@RacingRamFam ive got plenty of experience with flat tappets and spring weight. CHEAP flat tappets and no zddp is why they dont last. besides, i could cam swap twice with a flat for what it costs to do a roller. plus, flat tappet stuff is lighter.

5.2 has sooo much potential..... open up the intake and exhaust chambers, nothing radical, biggest gain is just deshrouding valves..... stage 1 cam, and open up that kegger a little.... wakes em right up

Keep in mind the 318 is externally balanced and the 360 is internally balanced but I believe it can be done.

Also. Its only costed me a total of 1100$ to cam swap my 5.2 magnum with all felpro gaskets. 208/214 cam and spring upgrade kit. Head studs. High volume oil pump. I guess i got a little luckier than yall would have if yall wouldve had to buy it all lol

Magnums are torque monsters stock 318 has 330lb-ft of torque (1997)
