When shooting video, I find it much easier to compose great shots, hit focus, and correctly expose when I have a monitor a little larger than most cameras with some tools to help. The AndyCine 5.7” monitor is a budget monitor with a unique cold/hotshoe mount which allows you to flip it to the front of the camera when shooting selfie/vlog style. What’s more, is that it can also power several Panasonic and Sony mirrorless cameras with an add-on dummy battery so you can use larger capacity Sony NP-F style batteries for longer battery life.
If you’d like to learn how to make great dialogue audio for your film and video projects, please have a look at my courses at school.learnli...

Great review, Curtis. For the price its difficult to fault any missing features of this monitor. Waveform, Vector Scope and LUT support (critical when shooting LOG) would be great to have, but again not something you'll find in a monitor at this price. It would be cool if the company could offer a version with those features for a bit more money without entering the price range of established competition. I've been using a 5" Black Magic Video Assist for a couple years, and the screen is so much easier to frame and focus with. The AndyCine 5.7" size would be even more helpful without the bulk of a 7" monitor. The BMVA burns through its Canon EP batteries painfully quick, so the NP battery life on the A6 is a big plus people should consider.

Thanks for the input Dave. I agree that the NP-F battery is a big deal and a slightly more expensive version with the additional scopes would be a welcome option.

Thanks for this fab review, Curtis! As always, very clear and thorough. I have been mulling getting a monitor for use with a C100 MkII. This review has clarified my thinking in an odd way. Andycine also have a 7” model (T7) that does not flip but has an aluminum case and, amazingly, is about $50 less expensive. Flipping is not so important to me and I like the idea of the tougher case and want the larger format. I’m not 100% sure, but the image quality, features and specs read the same for both monitors, apart from size. Given your positive review of the A6 I now plan to get the T7 - but if anyone currently uses the T7 and can confirm my assumptions that would be much appreciated.

Just an update, in case anyone is curious about the AndyCine 7" T7. I did purchase it and couldn't be happier. Basically operates like the A6, same quality of image, same image tools, but no flippable mount (although you can flip the image via the menu). This is definitely a recommended option if you crave the larger format on a tight budget. Fantastic value.

I bought a feelworld F6 a few weeks ago for my a6300 which as we know has no headphone jack. The a6300 display IMO is almost useless so I am happy with the purchase. All the reviewers seem to think they are going to drop the monitor - don't know why. I dropped a camera with a Zeiss 24-70 on it and the monitor and camera were fine - Lens back metal back broke away from the lens - apparently inside them the whole thing relies on 3 plastic posts where the screws go in. The posts can not be replaced - so the lens is now a dust collector on the shelf.

Curtis - I see that you have no problem snapping in the battery- The prongs on mine came with a kind of little cage on each prong that I thought was just to make a tight connection. You snapped yours in so quickly I can't see if you had them or not. Was reluctant to just pull them off - but I can push like crazy on the battery when it is straight where it looks like it should push in , but it won't pull in so I have to have it ind of hanging on an angle - which really doesn't appear to be right. Did you remove or see any thing on the posts when unboxed your monitor? thanks
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jim, on the A6, no, I didn't have to remove anything and the battery slips in and locks quite easily. I have noticed on other monitors that non-Sony NP-F batteries sometimes don't fit perfectly. But I'm also not sure about the Feelworld F6. Probably best to contact their support if possible. Best of luck!

Thanks for the tips on how to use this little plastic miracle, Curtis. Hope it makes my 5D Mark III usable with Magic Lantern (no tilt screen) and my A6300 usable in sunlight (unreadable outside when recording 4K) and my BMCC 2.5K usable in any light (worst built-in monitor ever, plus not viewable in sunlight). Right now I've just been using the A6300 for video as the others are more or less useless. May just go with the 5D Mark III Magic Lantern RAW HD going forward (footage looks great and one has real full frame depth of field). I have a shelf full of great Canon lenses and adapters I'd like to get back in action. The rig will be more awkward than I would like. I'll have to use the A6300 for discreet filming. For anyone who has read this far, the A6300 has the best internal mikes I've ever found on any camera. Better than many add-on mikes.

Hi uncoy. I’m not sure how much better this will be outdoors than the camera’s lcd. This is not an HDR monitor with as many nits as the ATOMOS recorders or smallHD HDR monitors. The hood helps a bit, but still tough when in direct sunlight.

Curtis, Do the various zoom functions like pixel to pixel and 9 grid, work when you are inputting a UHD/DCI signal? I ask because a lot of the cheaper monitors say they don't support any type of zoom functionality on 4k signals, and I've heard some do, even though their specs say they don't. -Dan

Thanks for the great review Curtis Judd! The monitor looks great for the price. I am curious if you have any thoughts on how it compares to the Aputure VS-2 FineHD 7" Field Monitor. I currently use the Aputure VS-2 with my GH4 and really hate that I am not able to match the color on the monitor to my camera. I also don't feel like the VS-2 is terribly sharp. Do you have any words of wisdom comparing the two monitors?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Natural Focus Digital, I have used both. The color is much better on the AndyCine A6 and can be matched to my GH5. I did not experience sharpness issues with my copy of the VS-2 FineHD, so I'm not sure if perhaps there's something different about your copy. The AndyCine A6, because of its smaller screen size drains batteries a little more slowly and can also power your camera which is a nice feature. Given the choice between the two, I'd definitely choose the A6.
@NaturalFocusDigital
@NaturalFocusDigital 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Curtis! It is good to know that you would go with the A6 over VS-2. Another question: What pro-level monitor would you recommend? I am debating if I should buy something in the higher price range instead of continuing to mess around with these semi-pro monitors. Will I see a big difference in screen clarity (ability to pull focus accurately) when I upgrade to a more expensive pro model monitor? A bit about me: I am the owner of Natural Focus Digital, an environmental video production and aerial cinematrography company based in Boulder Colorado. I am working in video production full-time as a commercial producer, shooter, and editor. Do you think I should just bite the bullet and buy a pro level monitor? If yes, which one should I check out? To learn more about my company visit: www.naturalfocusdigital.com Thanks!!
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, the first one to consider is the SmallHD Focus. This A6 is a copy of the Focus but the focus has a much better build quality and higher brightness which makes it much easier to see outdoors (though it is lower resolution). The 502 Bright puts out 1000 nits and is full HD resolution. It sounds like more resolution be part of what you're after so the 502 may be a better option than the Focus for you. If you want a recorder/monitor, the ATOMOS Ninja and Shogun series are good as well - easy to see outdoors, sharp, clean screens. Good luck! PS - cool solar array over on your site. I'm a fan of solar electricity!

Have you tried it with the XLR adapter on the GH5? Also, do you have concern that the dummy battery connecter could be disconnected easily during recording and then corrupt the file?
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 5 жыл бұрын
I have not tried it with the XLR adapter. You will need a separate way to rig this since the XLR adapter must use the hotshoe to make its connections. Regarding the power cable, it is possible for the DC barrel to get pulled out during a shoot since it is not a locking connection. However, I did not run into that issue as the DC barrel fit snugly in terms of friction.

Great review! Curious, did you ever try out the P2P mode with any luck? I've been using this monitor for a couple weeks with my GH5, but the P2P mode is locked while taking a 4K signal, yet in 1080p turning it on doesn't do anything. Was curious if you or anyone else was having such an issue. Anyways, thanks for your time! Love your content!
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 жыл бұрын
Hi That Isle Fox, yes, my understanding of P2P (Pixel to Pixel) mode is that for lower resolution output, it will map one pixel in the HDMI feed to one pixel on screen. This prevents the monitor from "stretching" or up-sizing a less than HD signal to fill the entire screen and instead shows the HDMI signal at it's native resolution. In those cases, there will be black bars and beams where the picture does not fill the screen. So this mode is disabled when there is a 4k signal coming to the monitor because the monitor can only display 1080p. In 1080p mode, I can switch it on but it has no effect because the signal is the same as the screen resolution. Is that your understanding of how it should work?
@ThatIsleFoxChannel
@ThatIsleFoxChannel 6 жыл бұрын
You know, that makes sense! I was under the impression originally that it would be essentially a 1080 crop of the 4k signal, but hadn't thought about it being used for lower resolutions to prevent upscaling! Definitely explains why it doesn't work in 1080 and above! Really appreciate you taking the time to answer!

Maybe you can help me. I have a “feelworld” monitor that is identical to this one, but my battery life is not that good when powering the monitor and my a6300. Maybe an hour at most from an npf770/930. These batteries are from an old Sony fs100 I had back in 2015 so could that be the reason? I don’t really want to spend money on new npf970 batteries if I don’t have to but if that will fix the problem where I can power the camera and monitor for 3+ hours it is worth it.

Hi Ian, One hour from a 930 seems a little on the short end. That's likely a sign that the battery is a bit degraded. I hope that helps.

How are the viewing angles if you tilt the camera up and down? Any issues getting false colours then or such things?

Quite good. You can see at 1:55 that as we tilt the monitor, the contrast and color remains surprisingly steady. No issues that I've seen so far.

Nice review, thanks. I like the features a lot, but if this is inexpensive, well, then the price level of monitors is still too high for me. (P.S. Just fyi, the heavy drum in your intro/outro music makes me hit the mute button).

Thanks Lau. I am not trying to convince you or anyone else to buy this or any of the other gear I review here. My goal is to provide background info for those that happen to be in the market or this particular tool so that they have a bit more information than what the manufacturer typically provides in their marketing materials. Please don’t take each new video as a sales pitch as that is not the intention.

@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but like most non-HDR monitors which cannot output more than about 350 nits, it can be difficult to see outdoors in some situations. The included hood helps a lot. In critical cases, again, like any other monitor in this price range, you may need to bring something like a towel or sheet to drape over your head to see perfectly.

Technically, yes. The Canon DSLRs are a little funky with their HDMI outputs so it will not send a completely clean feed, but it should technically work.

@@shiladityachakladar154 Again, I don't have a 5DIII on hand to confirm the details, but I recall others saying that the HDMI output included all of the status indicators that show on the camera's screen such as aperture setting, shutter speed, focus mode, etc. Also, and you'll want to double check this, but I believe that the output is not full HD so it will not fill the entire screen. These are vague recollections so definitely something you'll want to confirm with other 5DIII owners. Best wishes!

How does it compare with using the iPhone/FieldMonitor app? adamwilt.com/fieldmonitor/index.html
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 жыл бұрын
When I tried the app, it had a LOT of latency. So the monitor had the advantage on that front. But if latency isn't an issue for what you're shooting (e.g., not moving the camera a lot, such as for an interview), then the app should work fine. Can be better outdoors if your phone is capable of producing a brighter output in terms of nits.

Good review, thanks. There seems also the issue of HDMI connections (plural) with my Sony a7III with MixPre-6 combo. If I sync the two using the HDMI, then there's no connection for the AndyCine. Or is there some trick I'm unaware of? Since the a7III and FieldMonitor use Bluetooth, HDMI can be dedicated to on/off control and timecode sync. Correct?

Can you define false color, please.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 жыл бұрын
False color is a tool for setting exposure for video where colors are overlaid on the image to indicate different luminance levels within the frame.
@RustyTube
@RustyTube 6 жыл бұрын
I mean, I know that much, I am just wondering about the algorithm these devices use. My BMD Video Assist 4k does it, too, and I have a hard time trying to figure out how it decides which color to use for which luminance level. Thanks.
@curtisjudd
@curtisjudd 6 жыл бұрын
Ah, yes, the colors are usually defined by the IRE (luminance) value in the video clip. I'm not sure whether the Video Assist has it, but most false color implementations display a legend on screen that show what the colors represent in terms of IRE value. My Ursa Mini Pro false color lacks a legend which I would really love to see BMD address/fix.
@RustyTube
@RustyTube 6 жыл бұрын
It has a legend in the PDF manual. What confused me was that the colors seem random, but just now I have re-read the text next to it, and I think I’m starting to get it. Thanks for your help! (And yes, you did help.)
