More impressive to me, the .22 Magnum. I’ve always believed it to be a rifle caliber primarily for small game hunting. Personally, the only advantage I see to the 5.7 X 28 is the fact it is not a rim fire cartridge. Nice job, very informative.

I run .22WMR either Gold Dot or Hornaday Critical Defense in both my NAA and my PMR30. In my rifles I run various CCI depending on the target or game. I find the premium rimfire rounds to be reliable and only have a bit of ignition problems with cheaper ammo in the PMR30 and only a few of those.

Looking forward to the rifel tests. I just got the LC carbine and love shooting it. FN Red tip and Blue tips are available. I've heard of a black tip but that might be military and LE only. My range rounds are standard ball and home defense rounds are the blue tips. With this round gaining popularity, Im hoping to see more testing results from the rifles and pistols. Keep up the good work, enjoy your content.

The 17" penetration of the .22 magnum supports its effectiveness as a self defense pistol. Low recoil and high magazine capacity also affirms its use in that role, especially for those with weak hands or low recoil tolerance.

Great test. I’m looking forward to the rifle test now too. I wonder if they will even out a little more. But I figured the 5.7 would’ve expanded bigger with the extra velocity. It’ll be interesting to see the difference between pistol and rifle lengths. Good stuff as always my friend. 👍🇺🇸

The 5.7 gets way more damage, speed, and ft lbs Everyone on the comments says meh I’ll stick with my 22mag cause it’s cheaper. Idk if I would be bragging that the only thing that goes into my choice of caliber is that it’s the cheapest.
@ToolsandTargets
@ToolsandTargets Жыл бұрын
I think it's more that people see both of them as pretty much niche/specialty kind of rounds that are easily outdone by something like a 9mm for general defensive use. So if you're buying rounds just to plink with, you may as well use the cheaper option.
@robertwalker8453
@robertwalker8453 2 жыл бұрын
Yes the 5.7 went 4 inches further, but the 22 Mag performed more than adequate- 17 inches with 36% expansion. I know there is always the issue of the reliability of rimfire versus center fire but a lot of the self defense designed rimfire cartridges are more reliable than bulk ammo rimfire. I have fired the Hornady and Gold-Dot 22 WMR in pistols and have not had a misfire. Still can happen I know but with a double action revolver, just pull the trigger again. I think you wouldn’t be under armed with the 22 WMR Gold-Dot. Great test Tools!

First I found part 2 , then went to part 1. More interested in handgun, sorry. Since Gold dots are historically explosive I am not surprised by the results. Since not many manufacturers make 5.7 ammo, and nearly all make 22 mag ( at a significant difference in price) I am staying with my PMR 30. Does a good job and won't kill the neighbors!! Good test!!!

Id like to have seen a couple more shot into the gel. With or without the gel dressed up. Carried Gold Dots as duty rounds. Attended two autopsies of which the bad guys had their birth certificates revoked by the .223 Gold Dot and one with a 10mm Gold Dot. I dont mind to go into detail, but, i dont want to hurt anyone's feelings with a graphic description, but the .223 retained 99% of initial weight and performed exactly how you would want it to perform when a bad guy points a weapon at you. 10mm was as impressive. Very nice round. Before that we used hydo-shoks by Federal in the 10 and our bad guys were too skinny, zipped right through em.

I like the test a lot. Comparing very different rounds but getting similar results is interesting. I read what others think so here's my 2 cents. For plinking and small game, i choose the 22. For defense, im going with the 5.7. Aside from reliability of a centerfire, the wound channel is what matters to me, even with unimpressive expansion. Velocity and energy just have a way of getting it done. The 22 is still impressive for what it accomplished and would make for a fun, cheap day at the range. Both would be fun trying to extend their range just for dinging steel Great video, Tools. 👍

I have a WMP Walther and really like it. I've shot a bunch of different ammo versions, including ones that Walther doens't recommend because they claim cycling the action isn't consistent. I have had zero issues with cycling the action with any 22 WMR ammo from 36gr to 50gr. Love that pistol. I don't have any gun in 5.7 and probably never will. Just doesn't appeal to me.

I was more surprised at the inconsistencies in velocity in almost every one of those 10 rounds - especially given the expensive price of Speer rounds and extremely with the 3X cost of the 5.7 Speer rounds! I agree with you that either would get the job done - but, if the rounds you actually put into the gel were the lesser velocities - I could see extreme over-penetration. Seems like the rounds would be loaded more uniformly - in my humble opinion (expressly for the price point(s)). Great test, Tools (but casted doubts on Speer’s reputation)! Thanks (as always) for all you do!! I am curious about your longer barrel 5.7 tests. I have a couple of those tools - still not quite sold on if they qualify for SHTF events.

I understand the reaction with comparing the 5.7 to the .22 WMR. Just remember, the 5.7 is highly neutered in the civilian market. The 5.7 28gr Black Tip that is Military and Law Enforcement only, is a devastating round. It penetrates all soft body armor out to 50 meters in the pistol and out to 100 meters in the carbine. The bullet starts tumbling within 2 inches of penetration with or without body armor. If is wasn't such a long drive from south central Texas, I would bring my tools and ammo for you to test.
@ToolsandTargets
@ToolsandTargets 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that's pretty much my whole point with 5.7. It reminds me of 10mm like that. Most people will never see any kind of potential from a 5.7, because they buy the garbage ammo that's on the shelves. It's a complete waste if it's not used like it was designed to be, From a sub-gun with proper ammo.

Good video, but for first time I’m not quite with you. For the Cost not only the round but the platforms I’ll go with the .22, hands down. Possibly a clear gell test might be tell a diff story, but that small HP opening doesn’t set well with me, despite the power diff between the two.

Interesting test Tools. I'm not a 5.7 fan, mainly because of cost $. For all the velocity advantage I expected more from that round. From what I've seen of the 5.7 it's fast but it's performance doesn't equal the speed or cost. I'll wait for the long gun test to make my final decision on the . 57. From what I'm seeing I'll take the . 22 mag or .17. I'd rather die on my feet than live on my knees. Be aware and always be safe.

Ask the soldiers at Fort Hood how effective 5.7x28 is...
@Schwarzvogel1
@Schwarzvogel1 11 ай бұрын
@@erictrippe2778 Pretty much all of those victims were unarmed and many were caught by surprise by the perp, though. I've noticed that 5.7x28mm fanboys always seem to cite the Ford Hood shooting as an endorsement of their favorite caliber. Think about that a bit--the ONLY verifiable actual usage case of that caliber being effective is a horrific case of mass murder and treason. The folks (i.e. military and LE) who have had to use 5.7x28mm against genuine armed, aggressive, and uncooperative threats have never had anything good to say about its effectiveness. And mind you, *they* have access to both select-fire platforms and the spicier AP loads that we normal plebs cannot get our grubby mitts on. Because "shall not be infringed" means diddly squat to the current crop of rich, elderly parasites who have dominated Congress for generations. But I digress. If you have access to a select-fire submachine gun and have genuine reason to worry about threats wearing pistol-rated soft armor, then 5.7x28mm makes some sense, but even then, not much, as even M193 out of a 10.3" barrel will still zip right through their armor whilst also delivering much more energy to the target. And it is much cheaper too, although if you're shooting 5.56x45mm for defensive purposes out of a short barrel, you can definitely do a lot better than M193! I use M193 as training ammo as it's cheap, but but the fact that my training ammo performs better than $3.50 per cartridge boutique 5.7x28mm loads doesn't speak well of 5.7x28mm. If 5.7 were as cheap as .22 Magnum, I'd be all over it like gravy on meatloaf, but sadly, even the AE 40 gr load (intended as training/target ammo) is *more* expensive than nearly every commercially available 5.7x28mm load. And most people are interested in 5.7x28mm as a handgun round, not for carbines.

Wow, there’s a lot here to consider. While the results appear to be similar, the differences between the two, cost and dependability is up in the air. I like the reliability of center fire and the greater energy. But for any defensive application, I'm sticking with my 9mm or (for some clothing) the pocket .380. If the cost of the 5.7 goes down and the selection of tools and ammo goes up, then it might become a choice. The .22 Mag is a nice round, but for the range,22 lr is cheaper and for defense 9 mm is more effective.
@ToolsandTargets
@ToolsandTargets 2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree. You can easily exceed the energy here with a good 9mm.

I agree, but for those with recoil sensitivity and little willingness to practice 22 Mag is great. Even though I shoot 9mm a lot, I still shoot 22 Mag more accurately under 15 yards despite rarely bringing it out.

@@lazybear236 Yeah, you're right.. I didn't want to make my response too long, but I also have a .380 EZ because arthritis is starting to show up in some of my joints. I bought it in anticipation of needing it and of the possibility of it becoming hard to buy in the future for political reasons. I've kept my eyes out for a good .22 mag at a good price for the same reasons.

The price difference of 5.7 and .22 magnum ammo is great, but so is the cost of the pistols. A Kel-Tec PMR 30 for under $400 with 30 round capacity is hard to beat in my opinion. The FN 5.7 pistol is about $1100-1200 plus ammo that is almost $1 per round is a deal breaker for me!
