To quote Tears for Fears: "Kick out the style and bring back the jam." These artists are very skillful, but their work is boring. There's no courage in it. It would be courageous if it was created in the 1940's--maybe, but today it's just gallery style. New York gallery style. I notice how photos of the artists are just as important as the art. So, everyone is good looking, stylish, gay. The gallery might as well be Studio 54. Creativity is infinite, courage is rare. Just sayin... That said, I love your videos and your dog.

Yeah, just the money machine at work. All those artists are just a ragbag of big artists from the past. The Danish fella is Redon clone, although looking at his pretentious face you start doubting yourself.

That is a great quote and also a relevant comment, although I do not agree with everything. But yes, photos are very important. And yes, most of these artists are predominantly active in the commercial art world. But I also love the exploration of Dabin Ahn's essential motifs and style, the atmosphere of Oliver Bak's works, the directness and physicality of Juliana Cerqueira Leite, the ingenious and already very influential narrow image sequences by Sang Woo Kim, and clever work by Coumba Samba which is more jam then style! I try to present a mix of everything in these curated lists. Thank you for your honest thoughts, I really appreciate it and welcome them! Greetings from the both of us 👋🐶

Hi Julien, could you do a video on framing? Specifically, costs and aesthetics after having artwork selected for shows. Thanks for being an incredible resource for artists. Your videos are immensely helpful, and fill a void in the information space available to artists who did not attend school. It feels as if I have a counselor to help me navigate the art world.

Happy new year to you too… and wisely-resting Perrier… and family. This must have been fun to a produce. I appreciate all the personal narrative you have added and learned a lot. Like the manner of observational speaking about the artists. These artists do show Art world attraction and support with their resumes presented… as well as showing artistic skill. Currently, I must keep an eye on my own growing works… and find my attention drawn to established artists that resemble my style in ways… An artist Catharina showing currently at the gallery Sofie van de Velde…is one such artist, but less established resonating in my realm… so to say. Thank you. Warm wishes for the week.🙏☀️🖼️

I love your videos...but the names of artists that you speak about flash across my screen so quickly I'm not able to remember them. Would it be possible to include the list in your video title? That way a viewer can reference the title to your video when they want to check out these artists in more depth.
@contemporaryartissue2 күн бұрын
Thank you for watching and for the valuable feedback! The title will, unfortunately, be too long to upload if it would do this, especially with our top 10 or 20 lists. But I do mention all the names in the table of contents-you can even see the different chapters when hovering over the video player-and I link to the written article in the description and pinned comment so you can have a closer look at them at your own pace. Thank you again and have a great day!

Of all the words I do not like to hear in contemporary art and criticism the one that REALLY drives me nuts is LIMINAL! It’s this sort of catch all, trendy, po-mo trope that can be applied to just about everything about contemporary art, hybrid practice and art making generally, as well as a typical conceptual ‘lever’ for practice that poses as self important polemic; the kind of work that pretends to interrogate the very institutional theatre of the Fine Arts that it relies on symbiotically for any kind of legitimacy! It’s ’nonsense on stilts’ and tells me NOTHING about the work except that you’ve read some essays, probably have a degree, and regard either your own practice or criticism as ‘edgy’ and ‘rigorous’. It’s the most hackneyed, lazy and self-congratulatory word in the current critical lexicon and needs to be outlawed, immediately. Okay, rant over…

Yeah, I don’t think you appreciate art as much as you appreciate the story that comes with the art. The work is the only thing that matters. The story ? The title ? All bullshit. How do feel about Sontag’s views on art ? I’m guessing you disagree.
@lkd063 күн бұрын
you can't always discern the story, or the artists intent, just from looking at the art. If only the visual matters to you, fine...make up your own narrative behind it
@neuroticnation1442 күн бұрын
Humans are naturally wired for stories, it’s deeply ingrained in our biology, history, ancient cultural history, and in every corner of the earth. Even if you think there is no story, or that it doesn’t matter, you’re creating the story in your mind, in your subconscious. Art is visual storytelling.
@seanfaherty2 күн бұрын

In your selection the female artists are way more interesting than the male…. Putting so much more on the line to get their work seen and heard. It’s visceral. A man can paint a lovely picture and be elevated without question. A woman has to innovate, excel and reinvent to even get a foothold in the art world. Is this something you have noticed? So you feel your selection is complicit in this?
@contemporaryartissue2 күн бұрын
Absolutely not. It used to be like that, but today it is not. The statistics support this as well. Let's take post-war and contemporary painting artists born between 1925 and 1975. The top 20 ranked artists were 18 male, just 2 female. If we look at ultra-contemporary painting artists born after 1975, the top 10 had 7 female artists and only 3 male artists. Even more, if we have a look at performance art or textile art, we notice that this is completely dominated by female artists. So, the misogynistic art world you speak of no longer exists. Personally, I don't care about sex, gender, or race at all when it comes to art. I look at the art and read into it. Never would I exclude artists based on their identity, nor would I include one to tick the boxes and as diverse and equal as possible. Thank you for watching and have a great day
@skycartercolour57362 күн бұрын
I appreciate your response and agree you are not complicit but there is still misogyny in the art world. It’s complicated and nuanced. As a fibre artist my work is still seen as ‘women’s work’ purely because of the techniques I use. I think I am just a bit over it and hypersensitive to the fact women artists still have to work harder to be seen AND men who adopt the domestic crafts in their work are lauded as progressive while their work is often not ‘as good’ (subjective I know). Keep including women in your lists and thank you!

Thank you for your videos, they offer a great insight into the world of art. To an outsider the art world seems mysterious and very closed off but your videos are helping at least me, understand how it is and why. As I've been looking around, I have learned that as with all things, there are different "levels" in art and each caters for very different markets, not everything is for everyone. I really liked to learn about Dabin Anh, his works transmits so much peace. And very interesting to learn about Coumba Samba, made me think of how it must have been like when Basquiat and Warhol were around.

This list is straight out depressing. Why has everybody under 40 become so boring and risk averse? Dirt piled in a corner? REALLY? Not only is it not art, but we've seen this many times over. This is very overdone by now. There is no danger here, nothing that speaks to intense personal drive from the artist. Nothing that says "hell no you haven't seen this before and you may not want to."
@lobstermashКүн бұрын
Agreed. I found a lot of the work quite old-fashioned and overall depressing. The sculptress with the body parts ... nothing there. I was puzzled by the first artist copying an image from Sargent and slightly annotating it. Hardly innovative.

Hi Larry, thank you for watching. No, not at all. I enjoy writing too much, and it is too important. Today, I absolutely hate AI-written texts about art because it is always a word salad that, in the end, doesn't mean anything or could be applicable to any work of art. Think of the typical ChatGPT cliché 'challenging traditional conventions,' 'pushing the boundaries,' 'weaving a rich tapestry,' or 'inviting the viewer for introspection,' and so on. I see it too often on Instagram, in artist statements, or even in press releases of gallery exhibitions, and it truly saddens me. AI is clever, but when it comes to meaning and understanding art, it struggles badly. Thank you for watching and have a great day!
