I had an old man tell me ruffed grouse were poisonous while hunting in the high deserts of Utah. I thought he was crazy, now I know he wasn’t. Thanks!
@genericalfishtycoon38532 жыл бұрын
The first time I heard a ruffed grouse I thought it sounded like a gorilla beating on it's chest. I was just a young teen, and my uncle had just dressed up as a bigfoot to scare the F out of me not long before that and no one ever let me in on the joke. I was out there trying to sneak up on Bigfoot but all I ever found was birds. Took me years to finally figure out what was going on because of that damn prank. I was sure I was gonna bag me that Bigfoot damn birds. 😂

This is the first time I am hearing of it. I have eaten many. Haha
@peteelderman86062 жыл бұрын
They *can* be toxic to eat, depending on their diet, but they aren't poisonous since they don't produce poison. Find that guy and tell him I'm coming to beat him up. Just kiddin. Not about the toxicity part though
@beebop98082 жыл бұрын
@chu Harry I've also eaten many of them and come from the Carolina mountains where it isn't easy to step without running into mountain laurel, rhododendron or azalea in abundance. Some old time beekeepers would pull their honey that came off before June and set it back for the bees during winter claiming that it was poison. Turns out in Europe they call it mad honey and add it to mixed drinks to get a euphoric kick from their favorite toddies.

Hiya! Very interesting video. As a heads up, the predatory birds you showed in your last section of the video are the Northern Harrier (which can eat birds but tends to eat rodents), Cooper's Hawk (these look very similar to Sharp-shinned, but they tend to have more pronounced heads, tubular bodies, and a "fierce" facial expression), and Black Vulture. Vultures only eat carrion (dead stuff) so they wouldn't be going after the Red Warbler.

There's another bird in New Guinea called the blue capped ifrit. It has batrachotoxin on the feathers to prevent predators to hunt them.

I live in the northwestern United States and have been eating grouse for almost four decades without experiencing any ill effects, I wonder if it is a regional phenomenon?
@miguelsanchez34382 жыл бұрын
From what I looked up it might be a seasonal thing. Hunting seasons seem to line up when the birds are not eating the plants that would cause them to be toxic. They eat more mountain laurel in the later part of winter and grouse season ends before then so it’s likely any toxins they may have are negligible prior to then.

I think you’re slightly mistaken on the spur winged duck- it’s a duck, the Egyptian goose is also a duck- duck and most geese species are all part of the same family. Also warblers are generally insectivores- in fact only a few species of warblers even dabble in other types of food.
