I'm not a professional mechanic, but I have 6 cars at home with the wife and kids. If I had to pay a mechanic for everything, I'd go broke. Every guy should learn to do the basics, like oil change, brakes, fix a flat, etc. Most of the things I learned, I learned from youtube or a service manual. It's a great feeling when you do the work and know it is done right and you still have money in your pocket.

I recently started working at a diesel repair shop. When I got there they had a F450 with a brand new engine but they couldn’t get it fired up, and the one time they did, it only ran with 4 cylinders. It was quiet a challenge, I ended up figuring out the connectors at the CPS were full of gunk, then the truck ran in 7 cylinders and it smoked bad. The computer was telling us injector number 5 was dead, so I took off the valve cover and unhooked injector number 5 and the truck ran worst, I unhooked one injector at a time, and when I unhooked number 1, the truck stoped smoking and ran a lot better. Come to find out the coil in injector number 1 was defective. We threw in a new injector and cranked the truck and finally heard it run in all 8 cylinders. It was such an amazing feeling. It can be frustrating but once you over come obstacles you really do feel like you’re accomplishing task and moving forward.

It make me feel complete ✓ I love the satisfaction of using logic and train my brain to understand why something's happening and fixing it correctly ✓ I like inventing tools with the things I have around, if possible ✓ Started this tired of being ripped off by technicians that were just lying to me and couldn't fix anything ✓ I hardly trust most of the people My only problem is when I receive too much work, my brain kind of explodes. I need to do one thing of a time, complete it, and then receive a new situation. Still don't know how to manage that.

I told her hey, let me take look at it. I did, all the problem was is a dirty air filter, causing the machine to run on partial choke. Replaced the air filter, and it got full power back. I was just telling a coworker the other day that office work has no beginning, & no end. It is always the same & is never finished. I have worked in mechanical repair & now I work in collision repair. I love watching the cars that come in all smashed up, leaving looking like they are brand new. It is a satisfying process. & being a female I was tired of being ripped of by some (not all) mechanic facilities because of my own ignorance of cars. So I decided I was going to learn & be able to make more informed decisions on my own vehicle's repairs.

I work in healthcare but I really enjoy fixing cars. I started fixing my vehicles when Hyundai dealer wanted 190 $ to replace headlight bulb. I said the heck with that and started fixing my own stuff. Besides helping people, or helping cars, kinda same thing.

Hi Scotty, I’m pretty new to your site and love it, the amount of car info you provide is amazing. I’ve been a HVAC mechanic since 1968 and really enjoyed all aspects of that crazy trade especially the satisfaction I would get after fixing a complicated piece of equipment start up and run. That’s great fun ! Best of luck, Frank

This is a fabulous philosophical video. It says so much more than just about auto mechanics. You kept ringing a bell in my brain on each new point not because I am a great student but because every single ring of the experience bell was already so well understood.

Hey that's exactly why I became a mechanic as well! I don't trust anyone with my vehicles and I save a LOT of time, hassle & especially money doing everything myself! Also I just love to work on vehicles, I always have and always will. And i am one to believe that if you want something done right you gotta do it yourself.

well years ago it was the full service gas stations, you went out to pump gas and check oil, and then air up tires and then fixing flat tires, then oil changes, but those places are gone, and the quik lube places are crap.
@timewa8515 жыл бұрын
start with a smaller engine, lawn mower, motorcycle, outboard. it's more difficult today because you get the theory with old cars like VW bugs/bus, those being antique now makes it difficult to even learn basic maintenance skills. You also have to learn about torquing fasteners to manufacture's specs or you damage $$$$$ stuff.

I simply tore apart my car to figure things out. Replaced suspension ignition system fuel system alternator and recently pulled the auto trans and put a new one in. THAT was satisfying. First time I put it in drive and it just happily drove out from the hole it sunk into and was surrounded by weeds

I want a Toyota, but the local dealers are jerks! Been to both of the ones within 20 miles of my house and they all have a superiority complex about them. I can understand them trying to lowball you on a trade in, but to out and out refer to a 3 year old vehicle as basically trash lost them both a sale lol.

Hi Scotty. Very good video and advice. You have a solid point about not having so much talk flowing into your ears and having a sense of satisfaction of a job completed. My dad was a mechanic for 40 years leading up to the 1970's and owned his own business, a gas station with a 3 bay repair facility. I used to work for him on weekends and during summers. So I can really understand and appreciate what you are talking about.

One of the things I like most about being a truck driver is working on my own. I see my workmates at the start of a shift and sometimes during one but that's it. I am interested in cars and fixing them and I do minor servicing and electrical repairs but some jobs are beyond my toolkit/time/knowledge.
