All of you mention the 4.12 40 dash thing.. YES, thats fast, but this list is based on speed & LONGEVITY... I'm a big Bo fan when he was with the Raiders, but he didnt play long enough... Thats why Darrell Green is #1 above Bob Hayes even tho Bullet Bob won a gold medal in the olympics... Green played so fast for so long for 20 years. This list isnt about whos fastest purely by speed.. Jim Hines is the first man in 100m history to break the 10 second barrier and won gold medal in 100m in olympics in 1968 for USA. Jim Hines played for 3 years in the NFL as a backup wide receiver in 1968-1970, he caught a total of 2 receptions in 3 years, but hes not ranked on this list because he played so short....

HAND TIMED! How many times does this have to be cleared up...
@anonomyous658 жыл бұрын
Karmel Humphrey I know exactly how the electronically timed system works. It is infinitely more precise than the hand timed system. That being said, grab a stopwatch of your own and hit the lap button when you reach 4.12 and then again when you reach 4.24. You will notice that there is a noticeable "beat" between those two times. What i'm trying to prove here is that there is enough time to react and start a stopwatch in the gap of time between Johnson and Jackson. I'm willing to accept that the timers all may have started it a little late due to it being hand timed, and that his real time would be somewhere closer to 4.17-4.20. I am not willing to accept that a room full of trained professionals with stopwatches all communally goofed up on the timing.
@KarmelHumphrey8 жыл бұрын
Well that is a much more mature response. Thank you...Now...no one said they goofed. See this is where you're not understanding how it works. But I'll explain it and why it's important. If you stand 40yds away from me and start the watch when I go you have to account for how far away you are and your perception of when I move, your reaction to press the button on the watch, then determine when I cross the line and when to press the button again. E-times are NOT like that. The e-time starts as soon as you move a muscle. Which is why when you watch the guy at the start he tells them don't rock, don't twitch, he's helping them out big time. Then the timer stops when the body cross the laser. That takes away a TON of grace that a stopwatch does. Even if its held by 1000 people. None of them are at 2 places at one time. An e-timer IS. And again...this is not my logic or philosophy just passing on the info.
@anonomyous658 жыл бұрын
Karmel Humphrey Bo actually ran a semi-electronically timed 40. It was started by hand but it was stopped automatically at the finish line. So, the variable of the finish line is taken out of the equation which makes it more accurate. I agree that the laser time is infinitely more accurate than hand timing, but at the same time you have to appreciate that the hand timed 40 is run by professionals that know what they're doing. Is Bo Jackson's 40 exactly 4.12? Probably not. He himself says 4.13. Is it less than 4.24? In my opinion, it is. I feel like the real time is somewhere from 4.17-4.20 due to human reaction times being less reliable than the laser system. That being said, I still say 4.12 because it's the only "official" time given and he was definitely faster than Chris Johnson anyway so hey why not.
@KarmelHumphrey8 жыл бұрын
I appreciate hand clocked 40s and gm's, coaches, scouts still use it. I get it...I've been involved with football a long time and have used it myself. But still...its not the same as a "fully" electronic time. Nothing to debate there or argue. Bo never ran that. You're opinion on like Bo is fine--I like Bo too but it doesn't make things true. Now, Ok see this is where you're really killing me. "DEFINITELY" faster than Chris Johnson?! Do you really know this? No, you don't but you're being dogmatic and it's getting foolish. You want to compare apples to apples. CJ's fastest 100m: 10.38, Bo's fastest 10.39. You can look both of them up and both are recorded. Sooo...how is Bo faster? Oh "definitely" faster? No opinion or supposition here...tell me how that equals faster?

@@ufonious747 Definition of the word fact: Something proven to be true. NONE of those times are proven to be true. All you have is Bo's story. There is no official documentation, no video, no one to back up his story. He made sure of that by not naming anyone in the story. There are only 3 methods of timing: 1. hand timing, started and stopped by hand (NFL used this exclusively up through1998) 2. Semi automatic timing, started by hand stopped by laser. (NFL started using this method in 1999 and is still using it for the combine) 3. Fully automatic timing, started by starters pistol stopped by laser. (used in real track meets) Notice there is no "electronic" timing method. Electronic or digital is just the way the time is displayed on a time clock or score board. All three methods can be displayed electronically. Bo supposedly ran in 1986 during his junior year. In 86 the NFL was using hand timing. So Bo is mistaken about how the supposed run was timed. None of Bo's times at other distances even remotely point to him being that quick. 10.44 100m (not in the top 70 fastest in NFL history), 6.18 55m only 20 more yards beyond 40 (several players have much quicker times but none have a 4.13 40), and a documented 4.1 30yd dash during a baseball work out (yet we are supposed to believe Bo could cover the last 10yds in 0.02 seconds?). Lastly Christian Coleman, the 60m world record holder, 6th fastest human EVER with a 9.76 100m, and the quickest starter in sprint history with a 3.77 first 30m, ran an NFL style 40 in 4.12. Now you mean to try to tell me that 230lb NON world class sprinter, Bo Jackson, could run stride for stride with Coleman and even beat him (depending on what time you believe) in 40yds?!? Really? Today's world class sprinters cannot keep pace with Coleman, Why do you think Bo could? kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3fCqqKIlt6Cf6Msi=u_fUxJNLDV6MRQLq kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZnW9k36Ih6psadEsi=SgSdxkV_i7OgGxU8 Come on man Stop it. Bo was a better football player than most realize. Not only did he win the heisman trophy, he was selected number 1 in the first round as a running back. Look at Bo's part-time football career and his per yard carry number were better than many hall of fame running backs. Career average yards per carry: Bo Jackson: 5.4 Jim Brown: 5.2 Barry Sanders: 5.0 Eric Dickerson: 4.4 Walter Payton: 4.4 Marshall Faulk 4.3 Emmit Smith: 4.2 This is almost superhuman considering that Bo played baseball all year around while all these other full time running backs had 6-7 months off season to relax their body., yet he still outperform them per carry. He ran a 10.4 100m in college or high school, I think college. That should equate to around a 4.4 electronic time. He could have possibly gotten a little faster, had amazing start technique, and ran a big personal best at the combine which could have had him running a 4.3 e-time, but he probably definitely would never have broken a 4.3 and no chance in hell did he ever run a legit 4.12. That's a hand time, hand times almost always produce faster times and sometimes produce way too fast times because of a tiny delayed reaction at the start for a tenth of a second or stopping the clock too early in anticipation of the runner about to finish. He was an amazing combination of power and speed but how can you look at the film of him playing and think he is so fast that he runs a 4.1?

if you watch the NFL combine, they always post the unofficial time first (hand time) and then the official time (electronic) once they receive it. The official time is usually .05-.10 slower, and the biggest gap I've seen is .14. So, if they're .14 off, he's still running 4.26. I've watched video and film of countless RB's and Bo was as fast as any, and was the most explosive. Watch how fast he accelerates to top speed. It's like he's shot out of a cannon.
@of_the_Word8 жыл бұрын
+Blake Martin yeah that's the average time off in the modern day combine with the official timers, but in 1986 you don't know who the timer was and judging by the time we can assume it was way off. I've been timed in a 40 as fast as a 4.4 before, but I'm closer to a 4.8 so, not a valid argument. If his acceleration was really so good that he could run a 4.1 or even a 4.25, he have run a lot faster than a 10.4 100m.
@KarmelHumphrey8 жыл бұрын
Ok so let's go with your logic and actually it's .15-.20 adjustments btwn hand-time and e-time but lets go with your number. Do you still think he's faster than Chris Johnson, Herschel Walker, Ron Brown, Willie Gault, Michael Bates, Rocket Ismail, James Jett? ALLL of which had notably better track times as Bo. Not some guesstimation of a 40...but official and some olympic timed numbers. Also all those of mentioned had as good career numbers if not much better than Bo. Soooo...how is Bo faster still? Just because?
@blake78718 жыл бұрын
Charlie Varshay He ran a 10.4 in high school because in college he played baseball for Auburn, so it's safe to say he became faster in college with weight training and physical maturity. Secondly, the 100 and 40 are pretty different. The 40 is a greater gauge of explosiveness, which Bo was legendary for. And dude, don't compare your buddy hand-timing your 40 to NFL scouts and coaches hand-timing Bo's 40. Pretty different.

Herschel Walker was an all star in 2 pro football leagues, An Olympic bobsledder (9th in the world), A pro MMA fighter with a 5th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and He was a World class sprinter (yes faster than Bo). Jim Thorpe was a two time Olympic champion in the decathlon (10 events) and pentathlon (5 events), he placed 4th in the Olympic individual high jump and 7th in the Olympic individual high jump. Yes that is 17 events in one Olympiad. He went on to play Pro football (HOF), Pro baseball, and Pro basketball. He also won the athletic all around competition (equivalent to the decathlon world championship). It it easy to see who has the best athletic resume.

Bruce Lee Is this a challenge? You think Bo should be on the list? Ok, go on and present your case on why you think Bo belongs. I will then decimate your points and prove why he doesn't belong. Ball is in your court smart guy.
@sydboski7 жыл бұрын
Bruce Lee Ok. But don't disappear after my points. 1. Bo ran a hand timed 40 of 4.12. Which roughly translates to 4.24 semi automatic timing. 2. The 40 yard dash doesn't measure how fast you are. it only measures quickness and partial acceleration. Because really fast runners don't reach top speed till about 60 meters out. They are still accelerating at the 40 yard mark. So how can the 40 determine how fast you run if you're not running your fastest? It can't. 3. The 100m dash is the race where top speed is reached. It is the race that decides who is the fastest on the planet. 4. That said, Bo ran a 100m personal best of 10.44. The slowest person on the REAL NFL'S fastest in history is Willie Gault. He ran 10.10. Yes there are 9 other NFL players who have run faster. 5. There's 24-27 players that are actually world class sprinters (10.20 or better). All of them were faster than Bo. 6. Don't try to hand me the on field, in pads, in game speed crap. Because everything is still equal when they put on the 8-12lbs of equipment. The world class sprinters will slow a bit, but not enough to be slower than Bo. Also, Bo is not going to magically get faster after putting on the equipment.
@sydboski7 жыл бұрын
Bruce Lee So basically you are trying to tell me that you don't know the difference between being quick and being fast? That is all you can refute?
@sydboski7 жыл бұрын
Bruce Lee So you don't know the difference between a quick player and a fast player? Well let me educate you a little. A quick player would be Barry Sanders, LeSean McCoy, Darren Sproles, Dave Megget. A fast player would be Bob Hayes, Darrell Green, Jeff Demps, Trindon Holliday. If the two were the exact same they would have the exact same definition. They don't. So, again that is the only thing you could try and refute?

Well, it WAS hand timed. Even still, it still translated to about a 4.2, 4.3. Still remarkable for a 230, 235 pound guy.
@patrisio34 жыл бұрын
People need to stop thinking Bo ran a 4.12 in the 40. He (and players like Deion) ran back in the old days when there was no electronic timing, but only hand held timing. Hand held timing makes a runner look faster than what he/she really is because humans have slower reaction time (than a computer) to start a clock....not to mention so much human error due to a human at the start trying to tell when a runner finishes 40 yards away or a human at the finish trying to tell when a runner has actually started 40 yards away.
@Nate-xf6ns2 жыл бұрын
The 4.13 time stated is from the electronic system that existed back in 1986. If you listen to Bo Jackson tell the story.. the actual human stopwatch times were faster than the 4.13 reported electronically. Yes there were electronic systems in 1986.. maybe not as good as today obviously but this comment is false.

It only measures quickness and partial acceleration as the fastest players do not reach top speed till about 50m out. They are still accelerating a the 40yd mark. Yes he's fast, and yes he beat it, but most fast players would beat that out. Bo was great and special, but to me Herschel was more of a freak, and yes faster!

+Berz its the big fish story your uncle tells you every family cook out. back when I was a kid the rumor was Bo ran a 4.3 something. Every couple years the fish keeps getting bigger! Another 10 or 20 years people will be talking about how Bo broke 4 flat!

Jay Bee bo actually told someone from sc or something like a couple days ago the story of how he ran a 4.13 at the nfl combine when he was on his way to track practice and a coach stopped him and asked him to run a 40. it was completely official but they had multiple people with stop watches and the computer timer thing working which recorded him running a 4.13

Bo is the best back of alltime easily . but I've seen faster 98 moss was much faster after about 50 yards moss would pull on Bo jackson prime time Daryl green .. there all speedsters but randy moss has another gear and world class long stride speed .

best all around complete back the nfl has ever seen !!! he had everything and was great at everything...power, agility, vision, speed, hands, blocking, size...if his hip never got hurt he and or barry sanders would of held the rushing title, not emmit smith !!! emmit smith was a good back, but not elite, he had one of the greatest offensive lines in nfl history his whole career and a passing game which was always pretty good..and emmit ran most his carrys behind one of the greatest fullbacks in history in daryl ''moose'' johnson ! you never hardly ever seen bo or barry that much with a fullback in front of them and their offensive lines were not considered great!

MrCyborg Great as he was (in flashes) Bo was never a heavy duty back. He was unable to establish himself as the full time ball-carrier for Oakland over Marcus Allen. His highest season total of rushing touchdowns was five. He never gained a thousand yards. He was a tremendous athlete, without question, but I submit for your consideration one James Nathaniel Brown. Just look at the record. People talk about Bo Jackson's potential. They talk about Jim Brown's achievements.
