Thanks Tim - and congrats for spotting my deliberate mistake! 😅 I left it there by accident (it was up quite high over my head and I was too busy checking the floor). I didn’t even notice it when editing, and still put ‘leave no trace’, somewhat ironically! I only noticed it when I checked the KZbin upload. So I will go back and get it as soon as the weather and time allows. What a spam javelin! But kudos on your eagle eyes 👀

Thank you! Great shelter isn't it? I've just turned the volume up on that bit of the vid and I totally hear what you mean, it does sound like a fire crackling. Rest assured my little fire bowl had burnt out a long time before I packed up, ands even then I doused the embers with plenty of water. I can only imagine the sound must be something to do with frost or ice on the vegetation near the camera? It really was very chilly and damp, so ice was forming quite fast.

Cheers Mick! Yeah I woke up to a thick blanket of snow at home this morning but now it's all getting slushed up by warmer rain. Camera kit is a work in progress (a few too many blurry bits in this vid for my liking) but learning is the fun bit. Hope your hammock camp was fun and comfortable. What do you use to stay warm at those temps if I may ask? Are you using down bags/quilts/underquilts? I've yet to hammock camp below about -1 or -2 degrees, and it's right at the limit of my kit...

@@CottonBud I use a Hennessy 4 season hammock and their tarp It’s a double layer with an open cell mat fitted for a diagonal lay . That’s warm to about 4 degrees below I put a mylar blanket under the mat between the layers I sleep in the British army bag it’s a copy of a carenthia defence 4 , last year I managed in -7 with that set up and the old army softee suit - it’s a bit on the heavy side but it’s a real 4 season system- I’ve never got wet using it and I’ve been out in forty mile an hour winds (not intentionally) and it was fine and it’s warm Good in the summer too built in mosquito net On their website there’s a testimonial from a Royal Marine who slept in one in Norway in the winter highly recommended quality bit of kit

I liked your video and this tent seems very nice. I may buy one next summer to try it out. I also liked your windscreen. I've never seen such a big one before. What brand is it??? P.S. -5°C ain't freezing cold. Well... at least for a Canadian. It's pretty warm for us :) -20, -25 is getting freezing cold. -30 IS freezing cold ;)
@CottonBud
@CottonBud 11 ай бұрын
Haha! Fair point. I think if we're being scientific (or indeed universal) then 'freezing' means 0°C or below, as this is when water freezes. My water was certainly frozen in the bottles! But I will be the first to admit it's all relative and we are blessed with a temperate climate considering we are on the same line of latitude as Newfoundland. God Bless The Gulf Stream. Utmost respect if you camp out in -20 -to -30°C, with everything you need on your back! Be fascinating to see a vid of how you manage it. Windshield is this. A bit cheap and flimsy if I'm honest, but seems to help. www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00TY0BZ56/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Thanks for watching and commenting!

@@CottonBud I like your reply :) And, indeed, temperature is relative to many things. And let's not forget that some will find it very cold at +5celsius while others can stand cold temperatures down to -20 no problem. As for the video, I might do that because there's lots of crap on KZbin and this could lead some people to a very unpleasant night. However, the basics is the same whatever the cold temperature. You just add more insulation, the colder it gets. In the mean time, here are a few tips if that may help you and your viewers :) GROUND EFFECT If you had just one blanket an nothing else in winter, it's better to put it on the ground instead than on your body. Conduction is one of the worst factors to get you cold. LAYOUT WHEN NO FLOOR Let's say you sleep with a tarp only or have winter hot tent with no floor. In order, starting from the ground: - fir tree branches - closed cell foam pad (the typical blue pad) - mylar sheet (or one of those metallic windshiled sun blockers) - inflatable pad - sleeping bag The reason for the mylar under the sleeping pad instead of directly under the sleeping bag is that your body will want to warm up the air in the pad, then the pad to warmup the blue mat, and so on. So the mylar will trap warm air in the sleeping pad. - fill a 1L Nalgene bottle with boiling water, insert it in a wool sock, then place it at your feet. - If extremely cold, add another such bottle (500ml this time) between your legs. The femoral arteries located there are transporting lots of blood. So you\ll have a free internal furnace :) - have two hats at hands so you can switch to a warmer one during the night, if needed - a UCO candle lantern adds 100watts of heat and also help reduce the condensation - put everything to protect from the cold in a small mesh bag and keep it in your sleeping bag. - if you have lots of gear to protect from the cold, then sleep in your side and put everything behind your knees. - If more than extreme cold, find a Sasquash, make friend with him, and spoon. - eat calories before going to sleep. digestion produces heat. - always keep a dry set of first layers in your sleeping bag to use when going to sleep. - make sure to brush out all snow before getting in your shelter - never breath in your sleeping bag - when in bear country and camping during spring or fall. Always bring someone that runs slower than you... In the mean time, keep making great videos!

Cheers TF. I’ve had the shelter for about a year now, and this is the third time I’ve used it in ‘the wild’, but first in a vid. Lots to like - loads of space, options for opening up or battening down as weather changes, feel of both a tent and a tarp but with a bugnet, and fairly reasonable weight. Only negative is that it feels a bit of a faff to pitch well, certainly with a ridge line anyway. Quite a substantial pack size too, especially if you add a footprint as I do. Yet to try it with poles, or in heavy rain. I think in the right circumstances you may just love it! Let me know how you get on if you take it out… stay warm sir! Rich 👍

@@CottonBud yeah, noticed that faffing to set up, lot going for it though. one of the great bushcrafters -- Nagualero -- seemed quite fond of his and he ought to have known. sadly he's gone to the Land of The Long Camp now, hope he took his with him. still a great guy to watch though. looking forward to getting my Bungalow out under the trees, won't be till the warmer weather though, that much i'm sure of. 🥶 happy holiday season to you Rich, in case we don't see you again until after the New Year.

This is a great video! I just ordered that tent last night...how do you like it? I also like the way you have it set up to the ridgeline so that you can adjust the height of the tent vs adjusting the height of the actual ridgeline. That's a great idea. Thank you!
@CottonBud
@CottonBud 11 ай бұрын
Cheers Steve. I've only used it three times now in the wild but I've always thoroughly enjoyed it. I haven't had it in severe rain or wind though, so can't advise on that aspect yet - but all in all it really does feel like the best of both the tent and tarp worlds when in the woods. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do - I'm confident you will. I do find the setup a little tricky if I'm honest - here I have the ridgeline above head height, and use adjustable guy lines on prusiks to attach the 2 top points of the tent to it. In fact, I put the line up so high that I failed to notice it when packing up, and left it there by accident - you can just make it out at the 'leave no trace' walkout part! I have to go and fetch it as soon as weather and time allows... 😅
@steveelms3625
@steveelms3625 11 ай бұрын
Lol I noticed that you had left the line there...easy to do! Thanks again for the video and the tips! I'll have to practice with both a ridge line and poles/sticks to see which one makes for a better/easier setup... @@CottonBud
