Could you please help us with Technical Explanation of What is the IS (Image Stabilization) in CANON System Means, For Example in Olympus or Panasonic 5-Axis IBIS means Actual Sensor is moved to compensate for Shake. 1. Is it the same in CANON M50? 2. Is it Lens based IS, Optical Stabilization Where the Lens moves to compensate for Shake. 3. Will the Digital IS and Lens IS work in Harmony as compared to Panasonic G85. This is not clearly explained by CANON White paper. I feel its a huge pain in the arse. There you go! Great video as always, but I think you are incorrect about the IS Mode. I own the camera as well and I am pretty certain that IS Mode has nothing to do with the In body stabilization. IS Mode controls the lens stabilization that is built into the lens and Digital and Enhanced are the electronic stabilization that are built into the body. I've done some testing of my own and this is what my tests are pointing to. Not sure if you discovered this yet in your own testing, but when you hook up a manual lens, the digital or enhanced modes do not work. They only work on lenses that have IS built in. Would love to hear if your findings are the same. Anyway your videos are top notch. Thanks!

I think the best things about this camera are that it's an entry level camera and that Canon has said this is a benchmark camera. This is a pretty good camera, almost every future mirrorless Canon camera is likely to be as good or better than this in every respect. Apparently there's a 35mm F1.4 coming for it, if that eventuates we can expect more fast primes.

Great video as always Caleb! One thing to note is that if you assign the plus/minus button to be the magnify button, you lose the ability to easily switch between adjusting shutter speed/aperture/over-under exposure in all camera modes (which by default is mapped to the plus minus button). There are dedicated dials/buttons for adjusting shutter speed and iso, but in order to quickly change the aperture, you need the plus minus button (or the touch screen of course, but buttons are often faster).

Not true. You can easily reassign any other button to be the button that switches between shutter speed and aperture..

Great tips! I have heard that the 4K in this camera is less than ideal, but don't think 4K is a big deal for KZbin and vlogs. I shot Canon for years before moving on to other mirrorless brands, & kept some EF-S and full frame L glass in case Canon ever got their act together in mirrorless. This camera is tempting from a 1080 video point of view, and maybe for stills too. I look forward to watching your full review.

Realy helpful tips, one thing I would add is to make sure auto level (page 5 of the shooting menu) is disabled too. I've recently had some horrific results from that setting!

I did learn that it doesnt or the one i bought doesnt have a lense on it or come with a lense. Was totally unaware of that! I own this camera and it's great, the 4K focus is an issue, but there are work arounds. Overall I am VERY pleased with the purchase. Great info on the settings, I knew a few, but a few I did not know about, thanks.

Eliseo Way Make sure the mode selector is on the right mode, video or still. More items show up on still. And click through those big dumb graphics and set the display to standard. You’ll see the menus then.

Think of it like this. You have your 2mpix image and you need to crop it more for stabilisation. Do you really think that sub 2mpix image will look any good ? This option is just there so they can list some stabilisation in spec sheet.

The top IS button actually turns off the LENS stabilization (not digital stabilization) and then there's the two modes of digital stabilization. The digital stabilization can ruin your footage in some circumstances and then saves it in others. The "enhanced" mode is a tripod-mode - meaning it's going to crop a bunch to make your hand-held shots look like they're locked-off. But if you try and move, your footage will be awful. But it's a LIFE-SAVER if you're in a car trying to grab some static shots while the car is bouncing around. But if you're using a lens that isn't stabilized and you can afford the bit of the crop, the regular mode is great. You shouldn't need it for the kit lens or the 11-22mm, but for other lenses, it's handy!

Nice tips, I'll have to see if the SL2 can turn off the screen like the M50 can. That looks useful. You might want to check out 3rd party battery options. So far, my Powerextra 3rd party batteries rated 300mah more than OEM for the SL2 have been lasting longer while shooting video. A quick check on Amazon shows Wasabi ones rated 1100 mah vs. 875mah for OEM (Edit: and a set of Powerextra at 1200mah).

The regular IS setting is for the lens IS. The M series cameras do not have in-camera IS, just the addition of Digital IS which does not move the sensor. The regular lens IS does do a great job though.

Live Streaming full set up is priority for us also fixing the colors and brightness to match or adjust from the lights we purchased from your links from the desktop build.... Really excited to learn from your other videos from now to several years from now. We just need to first take care of our live stream issue with slo mode. It has digital stabilization. But what he does in the video is just turn it off. If he disables it then it doesn't matter that he leaves it on. Theres only off on and enhanced. So far the stabilization on mine has been horrible and i'm leaving it off also

I randomly think about if it would be cool to get this to replace my 80D for video shooting... smaller so more practical, 4K so... there's that and the IBIS :O All signs indicate I wouldn't lose out much... and actually gain some very usable features. Damian Brown there is no optical is - only digital which is Not recommended - when mounting a non is lens the is enable/disable Option disappers in the menu and you can only Choose the d-is options. Its in the menu because the lens has no is switch

I have a great problem with this camera when recording video the audio backgroud noise is terrible. Any idea how to fix this without any adding process through imovie video editor. When removing backgroud noice the quality of the voice changes dramaticaly

Keep in mind that some settings only show up in the menu when in film mode. They’re not shown when in any photography mode.

I love this camera. I have a 6D2 and a 1Dx2 and I use this more. Its small and easy to travel with. And with a Speed Booster attached, its equivalent to a full frame! 1.13 and in 4k its crop to 1.7.....awesome camera for what it is.

Hey Caleb. Got the M50 last week and loving it so far. The DPAF is fantastic. But I'm curious about why the Digital IS is so bad. While we're waiting for your full review, can you elaborate on this?

The "enhanced" digital IS puts it into a "tripod" mode where it crops in a bunch to try and keep it anything from moving. It makes a MESS of things if you try and pan or if you're moving at all. However, it's actually pretty handy for grabbing shots in a moving car or somewhere else where you're not trying to move but the car/road is really bumpy. I've found the regular digital IS to be really handy, though, when you're shooting with the 22mm f/2 and the video quality still looks plenty good.

I've had my M50 for less than a month. You need a fricking MAP to find the record button. Change the "Button Function" to enable the shutter button to start/stop video recording?? That should have been the FIRST thing highlighted in the manual and in 72 pt. type!! God bless, you sir!

When my Rebel XT started malfunctioning, I decided it was time for an upgrade. I'm waiting for my M50 to arrive now. I found a video kit with the camera, memory card, and a Rode microphone and the price was too good to pass up. My plan is to use it more for video to suplement my action camera for my YT channel.
