Oh my god! I'm a terrible pet owner! I've been using heat lamps for my leopard gecko for 2 years, night and day ones. I didn't know they required belly heat and I'm very glad I watched this. I'll make sure to get her the proper heating so that she doesn't die. This information is very helpful. Edit: My sister is the one that told me the incorrect information, in case anyone was wondering. She owns a bearded dragon and I feel sorry for it now that I've seen what misinformation she has.
@kilianhendriks53704 жыл бұрын
You can actually use heat lamps, if you put slate underneath it. Slate heats up very good and saves the warmth over a long period of time (i have one under my 100W Heatlamp and even long after the lamp is switched off the stone is still warm) my Geckos always lay on the stone shortly after the lamp is switched off and they often come back to the slate hrs later :)
@treetzataylor85094 жыл бұрын
Just so you know probably the reason your sister told you to use a heat lamp is because bearded dragons using heat mats can be dangerous for them, so her using a heat lamp is fine for her lizard just not for leopard geckos.
@squidyoga3 жыл бұрын
many gecko experts say heat mats r not good for them and heat lamps are better! I would recommend to keep using the heat lamp
@samistrash62623 жыл бұрын
@@squidyoga Most of my research has told me otherwise, and ever since I got the heat mat and removed the heat lamps my gecko has been *much* healthier. When I had lamps, she was cold whenever I touched her and she was weak. When I had the heat pad, however, she had more energy and was warm to the touch. From real-life experience, heat pads are perfect for leopard geckos (if you keep it at the correct temperature)

Thanks! The easiest way is using some sort of plastic container with a hole in it and putting a few layers of paper towel. Keep the paper towel damp by spraying it down or simply sticking it under the faucet every day or so and it will bring humidity up as it evaporates.

I really would NOT recommend putting a moist hide in the cool end. It can easily cause pneumonia and similar cold + wet related issues and on the hot side it will also increase the overall humidity of the hide as the water evaporates quicker.
@GoHerping8 жыл бұрын
The cool end of a leopard gecko enclosure would never drop below 75f, making it impossible to cause any issues you mentioned. So it could have benefits on the warm side, but won't have any negative effects on the cool end.
@andone01red8 жыл бұрын
JTB Reptiles I guess Hillary's humid hide was kept on the cold side....
@JTBReptiles8 жыл бұрын
GoHerping It certainly could, there is no knowing what will or will not cause an issue unless you're a trained reptile specialist vet, which neither of us are. However, whether it will or it won't, there are no added benefits to putting it on the cool side but there are on the warm, so it's best to put it there anyway and be safe in the mind that the cold/wet negatives certainly can't occur, don't you think?
@andone01red8 жыл бұрын
JTB Reptiles You just disproved your point in the first paragraph He's had Goldie for a while, I'm sure if it would have caused any issues they would have surfaced by now
@JTBReptiles8 жыл бұрын
That does not disprove it one bit. It just iterates how neither of us are true professionals and to give advice that may have a negative impact is incorrect, whether you are certain or not that it will occur. There are no negative impacts of putting the moist hide on the hot side - in fact, only positive ones - and there's no positives to putting the moist hide at the cool end and a very real possibility of negativity. So why do it?

That would be a pretty cramped setup, I think. As he said in the video, you should provide two of each kind of hide so hey don't have to share if they don't want to. My adult male is in a 20 gal with a warm hide and a hide with two compartments, a cool and a moist hide. With his water and food dishes plus a couple things for him to climb on, it seems pretty cramped and I've considered sizing up just for one. I'm by no means an expert, though, this is just what I think.

@GoHerping6 жыл бұрын
That's very common and nothing to worry about. Reptiles often take a while to get used to a new home and often eat just a tiny bit, or none at all. If this goes on for a while, you could try different types of insects including crickets, mealworms, superworms, dubia roaches, calciworms, etc. (Not all of these are good staple insects, but might get the gecko eating). Glad you put so much effort into a proper setup! :)

All reptiles, and particularly diurnal reptiles like Uromastyx need a period of complete darkness, moonlight bulbs should never be used for anything more than brief periods of viewing reptiles which are active at night. @@eliwild1 i know I'm little late but UVB light is not required for Leopardgeckos since they are nocturnal (they don't get sunlight in the nature) but it's not bad to have one, either. Like, you don't necessarily need one as long as you feed them extra nutrients and calcium, but it doesn't harm. (I care for Leopardgeckos for over 6 yrs already and i kept some of them without UVB first, then switched to UVB lighting and switched back to no UVB light bc i couldn't see any difference in colour, health or activity in my animals)

So reading the comments here, some are either inaccurate or incorrect. To clarify, Leopard Geckos are not nocturnal but crepuscular, a subtle but very important difference in their activity patterns. The truth is very few commonly kept species are truly nocturnal and the difference is extremely important in terms of care. Finally, Heat Lamps and similar are perfectly acceptable as heating options as-long as they are provided correctly, as any heating equipment should be. They must be controlled by a thermostat, be of appropriate wattage for the enclosure (and thermogradient) and must also heat the surface of the basking area to the correct temperature (as measured via infra-red temp gun) approx 90-93F.

This is totally inaccurate information do not listen to Shane. They are Nocturnal and do not need a heat lamp because they get all their warmth from their bellies which is why Heat mats are used. At the same time though you should have a UVB light that you turn on for half an hour to an hour in the morning the same again in the evening, that gives the Leopard Geckos essential D3 to promote strong bones. You could use D3 Supplements but they don't work as well (if at all in some cases) as a UVB light. Never leave a UVB light on all day because it can stress out the Geckos and it isn't natural for them.

You mean a heat lamp not a bulb that makes light and heat right? Because light hurts their eyes. I have a lamp that only makes heat and not light

A heat lamp is only acceptable to use if it gives off no light and is used in conjunction with a heat mat. They do not bask like other lizards do. A ceramic heat emitter is fine.

I'm thinking about getting a leopard gecko, I understand the heat pad but is it ok to use a lamp if it is kept dim or use a nocturnal bulb, I see these a lot, they are blue and red colors

Don't use nighttime bulbs. They can still see the light. You can use a lamp, although I'd personally have it on a timer so it's only on during dawn and dusk hours as they are crepuscular and not nocturnal.
