I was a boy scout at age 14 i completed wilderness survival 3 but my family has a very different view of eating bugs than I do so I have a lot of food for them about 2000 lbs of it. Mainly lintel beans ,corn and rice, sardines we have a lot of guns and ammo. But it's the knowledge that we really need and the mental fortitude to succeed no matter what. I recently broke my back and absolutely could not get in my car or even getting to my front door from my bedroom was almost impossible so that let out food deliveries. I had a lot of preps that I lived off of for the first 3 months and I'm so thankful that people like you Mary, had encouraged me to have plenty of food. I'm now restocking what I used in those 3 months because I'm having back surgery day after tomorrow and maybe will need stored food next week. So I hope people can learn from my delima and not wait until it's too late if I had not had that food I would have went hungry many meals. My meals however were things that were ready to eat. Chef Boy RD saved me lots of nights. Lol. I do have a lot of the food you are talking about in this video but for that first week canned meals had to do because I couldn't stand up for more than 5 minutes.

Excellent presentation Mary. If I can add to the conversation, I save banana peels and dry them in the oven until they are crispy. I then add that to clean eggshells and dry, used coffee ground. I powder all this, mix it and store in old containers until it’s garden season. What I have is instant fertilizer and plant food. Nitrogen from the coffee grounds, calcium carbonate from the eggshells, an potassium from the banana peels.

Mary, I have a very old cookbook, my mom’s, from the 40’s, & it has so many explanatory sections intended to educate new cooks, & as references for not so new cooks. Your videos are even more in depth, and your presentation is so inviting, so “you can do it too”, that I’m sure you’re inspiring new, & not so new, cooks, more than you can imagine. You must, absolutely, compile your own cookbook, home reference tome! Please! Even if it was transcripts of your videos, there’s too much valuable and necessary information that we simply cannot lose. If the internet ever goes down, I want your book for me, my girls, my grandchildren. Everyone needs Mary’s Nest Home Bible. 🥰

I’m loving listening to this as I’m sitting here sick *again*. You remind me of my lovely home ec teacher from the 70s in a tiny VA rural town. I’m disabled and I often don’t feel well enough to cook for myself, which I used to love to do. I live alone now. Sometimes I buy the pre-chopped veggies/fruit, because I never know how I’m going to feel when I start a task. Sometimes I cook & then I’m too tired to clean…or even eat. Suggestions for those of us who really need the better food, but never know what a day is going to bring health-wise. Thank you! Love your channel. ❤️

You can grow sweet potatoes in a container from store bought sweet potatoes. There are endless instructional videos but it is as simple as putting the bottom of the sweet potato in a glass or jar with water to root (change out the water frequently to keep it from spoiling) in a few days you will see growth on the top or sides of the sweet potato called slips, let them grow on a sunny window until they are about 3 or 4 inches tall and have plenty of leaves. Gently remove the slips from the sweet potato and transfer to glasses with water to root. Once the roots grow and the slips have continued to grow and have more leaves, plant them in a large container in a sunny spot in the balcony, deck or yard. As the slips grow they will vine and want to grow all over but you can contain their growth by harvesting the green leaves from the excess growth and use them as you would spinach. It is delicious and very nutritious, and basically free because it is a byproduct of growing the tubers. It is the first thing that I successfully grew and continue to grow. I hope you try it. It is wonderful. When you are ready to harvest the tubers, harvest the last of the leaves and set aside 1 or 2 potatoes to start the process again. Good luck and God bless.

@@YeshuaKingMessiah Usually hamburger is sold as 80/20, or 80% lean, 20% fat. If it was 80% fat, most of it would cook away, because it would be 4/5 fat. Other ratios are often available, like 90/10.

@Maria Think back to any time before the 1960’s. Many families had beef only once a week, if that. If the elimination of red meat from our diet was anyone’s ‘goal’, the avian flu really screwed that up by making the cost of chicken and turkey shoot up. I guess we’re stuck with pork and mutton/lamb, or seafood. Man, life is rough. (PS: If your addiction to beef is really very strong, you had better buy a few cows. And a big freezer.). PS, addressing the huge shortcomings in our economic system is a subject that needs more in depth discussion, but it is going to have to happen through political action. It may help to inform people about our class-based system being perpetuated by the rich, but it is easier and more direct to find suitable candidates to support who will move our ingrained system towards a more egalitarian long-them outcome.

My tip for the whole chickens is to spatchcock or butterfly them, cut the back out with poultry shears or a knife and press down on the breastbone to flatten them a bit. Then you can put them in a foodsaver bag or however else you'd normally wrap them for the freezer. A butterflied chicken takes up a lot less space than a whole chicken (which has a lot of empty space). It bakes up just like a whole chicken, but a little faster. To be able to afford meat (especially red meat) we pretty much wait until it's on sale, then pressure can it. It fits in the budget a little better that way :) We can still find whole chickens on a great deal sometimes, so we do buy those on occasion. Luckily I learned several years ago how to break down a whole bird into the various pieces like they would come at the store.

I was asked to help the community get involved in the community raised garden beds. I decided to propagate high yielding fruit and veg for the back half where the entrance is, so folks could use what they need if a helper, or to deliver where needed. The front couple beds are facing the street, so flowers and herbs go there, along with a fairy garden section and a giant pumpkin in fall so kids can see it grow day after day. If everyone would grow one or two items of high yield and share surplus, it can go a long way to helping calm concerns and secure more than enough, and be done right in your neighborhood.

It costs about $100 to get off and on the island to do a shop, so I am practical and trying to learn more tricks from you, Mary, and thank you for your ideas. Canning, blanching and prepping fish, along with gardening, baking and sewing were useful skills, passed down from my grandparents and parents so I have had a good start. I have over the coarse of years made my own dog food too. Recently, in Canada, we had several small avalanches, caving in passages so truckers couldn't get through. Coupled with Covid and the Panama Canal blockage, I arrived at the Walmart to find there were only TWO BAGS of DOG FOOD remaining. I didn't have a lot on hand as backup as I had been snowed in and used most of my food to feed my dogs. When it came down to it, instead of putting my peelings aside for broth, I started feeding my dogs the ends of carrots, apple peels and more which they seem to think is fun, and a treat. Anyhoodles, I need to consider more back up for my wee beasts too so I am not facing the same dilema, next snow. And Mary, keep up the excellent videos, can not wait to try and make buttermilk.

Maybe look into powdered milk if milk is hitting those prices then the instant would most likely work out cheaper per gallon. If I use Walmart Instant Milk powder I can get the price to about $3.50 a gallon, usually I can get fresh cheaper but it's good for emergencies or price rises. I buy fresh it when it's on sale and freeze it as long as you shake it up well after defrosting to mix the fats back in you can't tell frozen from fresh milk. The bags you have in Canada freeze well and take up less space than the bottles too.

Great suggestions Mary! I don't know if you knew this, but with the all purpose flour (w/baking powder and salt to make your own self-rising flour) and yogurt, you can also make the 2-ingredient breads like biscuits, bagels, pizza crust, cinnamon rolls and things like that. My youngest daughter and I made the bagels and they are dynamite for breakfast with eggs (or ham and maybe turkey sausage too 👍🏾👍🏾) Those 2-ingredient bread videos are all over KZbin, and the Tasty channel has plenty of recipe ideas. 👍🏾👍🏾

Look online at the store flyers that you are going to be shopping at for the deals. If you can afford it and have the space for it buy your meats in bulk it will save money in the long run. The straining of the store-bought yogurt save the way and if you buy frozen fruit juice add the way instead of water. I took my grandma shopping the other day and she taught me how to dehydrate fresh veggies and you put them in a jar with an oxygen saver and they will last a lot longer. She showed me all you have to do is add the veggies to boiling water and they will rehydrate. She also saves the water from the veggies because they have a bunch of nutrients in it and adds that to her frozen juice consentrates she gets.

Hi Mary, greetings from Australia. I did a cost comparison with Protein and Dairy from my local supermarket and here are the figures:- your cost $20.54 our cost US$48.41! It is so expensive to eat here! LOL I guess transport costs don't help - we're thousands of miles apart from point of origin to destination. Cost of eggs and whole chickens more than double what you pay. Cheese and yoghurt 3 times the price. Makes things difficult to say the least! Thank you for your commonsense approach to preparedness, your calm attitude keeping us focused is very helpful in these crazy times. God bless you and yours. Debbie from North Queensland👋

The grocery store prices have increased a lot in the past 12 months, but Australia is still an expensive country to live in, food and fuel-wise anyhow. I hope your garden is successful and those babies of yours get fed well. Blessings. 🌴

Love these videos...thank you Mary! These prices seem a bit high to me, though. I often buy both regular plain yogurt (for homemade ranch dressing, "lassi", smoothies, etc.) AND Greek yogurt. I look at the protein content and since the Greek yogurts I prefer usually have twice (or more) the protein of regular yogurt, the fact that they are twice the price seems like they're of equal value per gram of protein. I usually shop at my local Kroeger-acquired store (Fred Meyer, here in the Seattle area) and I always start with the weekly ad. They often have milk on sale as a "loss leader"--99 cents a half gallon. I can freeze it, too, to have later when it's not on sale anymore. Eggs, frozen veggies, cottage cheese, yogurts, butter, shredded and bar cheese...all are often on sale in the weekly ads. The first Tuesday of the month is Senior Discount Day--10% off all house brands--so that's when I do my major shopping and pantry restocking. I always log in to my account on their website and browse through all the coupons, saving any for products that I might consider buying. I can save quite a bit doing these things, and you can do this at most major supermarkets. Just remember to enter your card or phone number that's connected to the card, so that all the digital coupons are activated and watch those get deducted from your receipt. If you are expecting the senior discount, you have to tell them, and then boom--watch some more discounts come off the bill. They send me paper coupons based on what I buy as well, so I often get good discounts on my favorite foods, and sometimes even a freebie (peanut butter or eggs or something). There are other tricks, too, like checking the markdown produce shelves for the 99 cent bags of ripe or bruised fruit, avocados, bell peppers, etc. Sometimes I "case" the avocados and tomatoes to see if there are some almost over-ripe ones that should have been bagged for markdown. I often find some. I put a bunch together, then find a produce clerk and let them know that they can find some likely candidates piled in the next section over. It's up to them how many they put in each bag, but they're just happy I've pulled out all the ones they would have to toss the next day so they often put several in each bag! 3-5 avocados for .99? Yes, please! There's a bread and bakery markdown area, too, but it's mostly donuts and not-so-healthy bread and rolls, so I usually don't find anything I want to buy there. Lastly, I've gotten real good at scanning the shelves in all refrigerated areas--dairy, salad, deli, meats/fish, etc--for markdown tags. I've gotten pints of cottage cheese for .39 - .99, organic milk for the cost of regular; salad, hummus, guacamole for substantial discounts...all because they were near the "sell by" date. They were fine--I've never had a problem, as long as they stay refrigerated. Oh, and the hot rotisserie chickens are marked down and put in the cold case after 9 pm or so, so that's a good deal if you want something quick. (Plus, if the cooked chicken is cold and relabelled with that code, you can buy it with food stamps, while the hot chicken isn't allowed.)

Keep an eye out for the 10 lb bags of chicken leg quarters. Our Walmart sells them for $6 (60 ¢ a pound)! Roast them just like a whole chicken. Then use the bones for broth and the skin for schmaltz. Last time I bought 20 lbs of leg quarters, I ended up with 8.5 lbs of meat, 5 quarts of bone broth, and a quart of schmaltz for $12. If you're not making your own cottage cheese, stick to the Daisy brand. The ingredients are MUCH cleaner than other brands, and it's not much more expensive.

One other idea, when I am working with lots of apples, I use them for apple scrap vinegar and pectin. I just boil down the peels, cores and seeds in water until it boils down and thickens. If I’m using lemon juice, to soak the apples, I throw the lemon seeds in the pan as well. A couple of downsides, you have to refrigerate the pectin and it is cloudy. It won’t make a pretty jelly, but it works great in jams. Hope you have a great week. -Natalie

Going through the video and got to part on dairy. I fully agree that if a person is eligible for the WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program, they should partake in it as it can provide nutritional support for some of the most vulnerable times in a child's development. Having said that, a participant should also know what foods they are eligible to receive under the program. I am not sure what the rules are in other states, but in Texas, whole milk (and yogurt made from whole milk) is generally only available under the program when a child is between 1 and 2 years old. This is in line with USDA recommendations that children only drink skim or low fat (1%) milk with the exception between 1 and 2 years old due to increased fat requirements for brain development during this time.

I believe the government regulations regarding diet are almost always wrong. Didn’t the government recommend margarine over butter? But now we know that margarine actually causes health problems, but butter is actually good for you. I used to churn my own butter and save the by product, buttermilk, for drinking and baking. When I was young all kids drank whole milk, and none of us were fat or obese. Now kids can only drink skim or 1% milk at school and so many of them are obese.

Here in Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 one chicken is between 10 and 14$. Butter is now 7.99$ lb . I scour the flyers for sale items and mark downs but everything has almost doubled in price. 😳 Your information is soon going to be literally life saving!

Oh Lillian, thank you so much for sharing the tip about old cookbooks and also for sharing your experiences in Ontario. Yes, prices are just getting so high and it seems as though they increase every day. We’re really going to have to hunker down and be very smart on how to stretch out food budget. So glad you’re here! Love, Mary❤️🤗❤️

Wow! Butter is still around $5/ pound in Manitoba. But lots of other things have gone up. I try to buy some extra food each week. I’d rather spend extra now and get more food for my money!

I find Walmart prices on fresh foods, meats and vegetables are more than my local grocery stores. Stores like Sprouts , Trader Joe’s , Kroger usually have coupons and deals Walmart never has. I rarely shop for fresh food at Walmart. I do buy frozen food , because it is cheaper as well as canned goods too.

The price in America always amazes me. In my part of Canada it's definitely alot more. You are such a wealth of information. I have been a homemaker for 16 years now, but feeding the 5 of us (2 adults, 2 teens and 1 preteen + 1 grumpy kitty) was getting stressful.

I have never heard about feeding a starter with potato starch. I can only store potatoes for any length of time in GA during the winter. I have to freeze, can, dehydrate or use relatively quickly in warmer months. I don't have a basement or root cellar. My deep sale price potatoes I bought in February and stored in a cardboard box in an unheated room are sprouting. The biggest roots are going in the ground. I'll process the rest tomorrow.

Wasn’t so worried about the chicken but would be concerned about strawberries as they are loaded with pesticides, more so than any other fruit. Organic is expensive but some items are worth it in the long run

It’s better to eat one meal a day and just eat meat. Carnivore diet surprisingly does not cause nutrient deficiencies, fills you up so you don’t need much food, more bang for your buck nutritionally. If you’re prepping don’t waste money on luxuries like fruit.

Hi Retha, I understand completely but it is important to remember that "Organic" does not mean pesticide free. It just means that "natural" pesticides approved by the US Organic Standards are being used. And often a lot more than those used by conventional farms. You can read more in this article from Scientific American but there is a lot of information on the web all about this: blogs.scientificamerican.com/science-sushi/httpblogsscientificamericancomscience-sushi20110718mythbusting-101-organic-farming-conventional-agriculture/ And although, some might believe that organic is worth it in the long run, for some it really isn't an option. So they would have to go without eating fresh fruits and veggies. And it's more important to eat these foods than it is to worry about pesticides. Here's some interesting info all about this: www.nbcnews.com/better/health/produce-side-pesticides-what-nutritionist-wants-you-know-about-ewg-ncna864156 Love, Mary

I buy those small bags of veg and put them in the dehydrator. Shelf stable and they take up less space. When making soup or stews just drop in a handful while it cooking.

When an ingredient is listed as just "spices" I put it back on the shelf as in the "spices" they can put Neotame which is a stronger version of Aspartame - something I'm allergic to. They don't need to list it separately because they use a smaller amount than they would for Aspartame/NutraSweet (& now has another name as well). The difference is like 10 to 1in strength difference.
